Despite my best efforts to clear out ready for the move, I couldn't pass on this awesome eBay deal. This is THE 15" PowerBook G4 to own. It's the super duper 1.67Ghz model with a high resolution display, DDR2 RAM and a DLSD, the last PowerBook G4 15" before the release of the MacBook Pro. I was lucky enough to get it boxed too. PowerBook5,1 A1138

Beautiful! I've got that model, it's been in use for a decade now, sadly it shows. It now has an SSD, 2GB RAM, but I removed the SuperDrive because it stopped working years ago. The battery only lasts 2 hours now, would you recommend going to OWC for a replacement?

2005 was a time of we can't really effort laptop prices. this model is still usable so much for every task. and to know its every inch is designed with special care makes you feel special always. I'm addicted to find stuff like this all the time. stuffs that represents respect for dignity of technology and design.

Ten years old and still looks to be a very usable machine for general business/office work. Nice one! Hope you'll end up using it frequently, would be a shame to keep it locked away just for the sake of it ;)

What a beast! Absolutely chuffed you won it mate. Regarding the display - your MacBook Pro is LED backlit which instantly puts in a different ballpark brightness-wise to anything the PowerBook can do. They're not the brightest of displays by today's standards but colour reproduction is still top notch. Virtually on par with the Cinema Displays IMO.

Wow, nice find! I wanted one of these, but had to settle with the prior 1.67 GHz model. I do have another PPC Mac with DDR2 RAM, and that is the Power Mac G5 (Late 2005).

Love this! It’s my favorite! It’s already 17 years! Of course Bad battery 🪫 but useful! It was unprecedented thin on that times! (almost twice as thin) With very colorful and bright display! It was better notebook in 2005-2006

I bought this model when it came out and used it till just over a year ago as my main laptop, it was that good... unfortunantly our house got robbed and it was stolen :(

That seemed snappier on a G4, 1GB RAM, and what I'm guessing is a HDD (right?) than some modern macs do on fast SSDs and processors dozens of times as fast. Shows how much OS load increased as our speeds increased.

Nothing beats these final gen PPC machines. I have the 12" 1.5ghz version in pristine condition with the box and manuals, brand new battery, new replacement charger with box, brand new Mac Case 12" sleeve, retail copy of Leopard, brand new DVI adapter, sales brochure, and a book about Powerbooks called "PowerBook Fan Book: Love at First Boot." Been picking up everything 12" Powerbook related that I come across.

I recently got a Macbook, 2008, and there was a similar issue with the drive. Turns out it was something weird got stuck during shipping. I eventually got a disc to go in, then it seemed to fix the problem. I think the motor was set in the "disc in" position when there was no disc in the drive. There hasn't been a problem since I got a disc in there.

I have the same one, except I upgraded mine to a 128GB SSD and 2GB RAM. It runs leopard like a champ, but since I got my Titanium PBG4, I haven't used it too much. But still, the screen resolution on these are great, the only downfall to these are the fact that an LED backlight isn't used. This makes the display seem not as bright as your MBP. I definitely would recommend maxing the RAM and installing an SSD, it's totally worth it. When looking for a SSD, the best option is buying an mSATA drive, along with an adapter that uses a Marvell chipset. The Marvell will provide faster speeds for the mSATA. The SSD will completely saturate the ATA bus on these. Good luck and enjoy the PowerBook!

I've always kind of wished that PowerPC Macs were easier to use on the Internet for some reason even though I've got plenty of machines that are much more powerful and work better for that purpose.

Actually I notice the resolution and its huge! I own a PB 17" (the second version of the 17) and I'm sure that the resolution of that 15" is way more awesome that the resolution of mine! Great video by the way

Man, this laptop has the same shape of Apple Silicon MacBooks, way ahead of its time... and it really looks a premium product, much more than today's laptops. It's even upgradable (RAM, drives, etc.) Makes me want to get one NOW! 😍

it was either a foreclosure, eviction, or angry divorce because there was a bunch of husband and wife stuff and what you'd expect to find in a master bedroom. house was freshly for sale (I have a route in the area so I see it every day) and there was also an AC wireless router, and an old printer. Took the router, worked great hahahah

I got mine for $23 Expedited USPS from Hawaii In 4 days! To Chicago Needed wiped to zeros... 80GB OEM 5400 rpm Drive ended up being fine Needs a new battery fn and end keys or their hinges.. rocker camp stool things.. Screen has SEPIA moisture damage, BEHIND the matte cover.. It RAINS a lot in Hawaii!!! YL eBay seller had no power brick No way to test... Accepted my $10 offer USPS Expedited was $13... I'm installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, right now Stay tunaed.. J.C.

How are you doing Tom. Surprising a lot of good you tubers like you I've in the UK and even I do, I also use obesolete things. In fact I still use a 900mhz Toshiba Tecra M5 daily with 1gb. It also runs XP though I'm planning to go to FFLP (Fundamentals for legacy PCs) because it only has a 40gig hard drive. I hope your fine with the hackintosh and the issues you had with Yosemite a bit ago, I still love the MacBookPro and speaking of it I daily use a iPhone 3GS, iPad 1 and planning to get a 2012-2016 MacBookPro and I don't care about Retina if I can see the screen clearly I can live. Sorry for my bad grammar. I like speed typing on a iPad Air 2 due to the amazing ram amount and its weight.

I have the late 2005 or early 2006 PowerBook G4 15 inch double layer SD version with 2 GB DDR2 DSRAM and with 1.67 GHz which is absolute beast except well you know, there is not much software anymore for them. And on another note it came with a iSight camera and those speakers that would've came with an iMac G4

My Dell Latitude E6400 From 2009 has a 1440x900 display and I will agree those kind of displays are nice. I used to own a A1095 1.5ghz PowerBook G4 and mine looked like it had been through hell and back and I had so much trouble with my slot loading drive. It would hold a disk and not eject. Other than that what a nice machine, keep up the quality videos Tom :)

Those came with Panasonic UJ-846. I know as I have 6 of them, I already disassembled 3 of this kind as well. All have Panasonic UJ-846 in them. Funny enough you may get away with single 2GiB DDR2 as 2GiB RAM is a limitation of memory controller and it does not matter, if it is one stick or two of them

Hey Tom! I'm watching one of these laptops on eBay and am planning to buy one for school purposes among other things since my trusty Dell died on me. How do you think this laptop holds up in 2016 for Google services, MS Word, and watching RU-vid? If I go ahead and install Leopard on a G4 machine, would it be worth a performance impact for massively upgraded compatibility? EDIT: Also, if I took my 4 GB DDR2 memory out of my Dell, would I be able to slap it into the PowerBook? I only ever owned one other Apple laptop that broke magnificantly. Basically, the power plug snapped out one day.

My god!.. Back in the day when I was a university lecturer and the senior boss of the Apple Mac Studios when teaching Bachelor of Arts Graphic Design in my old job I bought one of these in and the previous 15" Power Book G4. Way back that cost me close to £2000! What a machine it was though. I use to play Quake III Arena on it back then against all the PC players and destroyed!

meanwhile I got two of them, two PowerBook 5,8 1.67 GHz High Res. One looks great, one works great. I actually am writing on the PowerBook that works great ... but days are counted as we say in german, the other one has the better case (looks like brand new), but needs a new board, cuz the video RAM is damaged.

Quite a bit like the one I have, mine has a smaller hard drive and running Leopard. It is a 1.67 processor but I seem to be limited to 1 gig of ram as the seller said 1 slot was nonfunctional. Thinking of putting in an SSD hd and perhaps a new logic board so I can upgrade to 2 gig of ram. Always look forward to your vids.

Heh, this makes me want to find my 17" PowerBook G4, it is the exact specs as your new one but with the 17" display, I used to love that thing until, it had an accident with a little force called gravity and, well gravity won leaving it with a cracked display and a big dent on the right side, breaking the optical drive and slightly lifting the palm rest, might find it and buy a new case, screen, top case and optical drive for it.

i recently acquired a late 2005 ibook g4 12" with an incase case fully worked when i got it, but after i upgraded the hard drive the speaker connector broke :( still works with headphones tho

I have the 17" mint mint mint ( no dents or scratches ) and boxed. I still use with classic OS. PS I think the cd was places upside down so the laptop won't load it ?

great video makes me miss my 1.5ghz 2004 powerbook g4 had it around 2013 and used it as my main laptop for about a year until i got my macbook pro sadly a few months after upgrading the gnu on the powerbook went out lines al across the screen making it un usable gong to get a new one hopefully in the near future going to strive for one like you got they are such beasts

I never liked how the version the 15" got 10% thicker (1.1 inches), the older titanium 15" and the 17" were only an inch

If that PowerBook is anything like my 2008 MacBook you need to push the DVD in a bit further so about 1 inch is sticking out, then it will grab it

Still amazed with the G4 series.. Check the "Power PC Archive" for the webkit these G4s are net capable again to some extent. Issues with HTML5 have been ironed out somewhat. Only thing strange was a hi res screen has smaller fonts..........

OSX 10.5.8 Leopard lives again Iphone 3GS pairs well and is also somewhat faster with LTE 700mhz providing top net speed if allocated. You'll get renewed value out of a single core 600mhz iphone. They make a good pair

+hitchhikingmike Agreed. In my opinion, they nailed the design of the entire PowerBook G4 aluminium line and I'm very pleased they kept the case design for the first few MacBook Pros. They just look awesome, there's no other word.

I've got a mad urge to get my powerbook g4 out and start playing with it. Your enthusiasm has got me so excited I just can't contain myself. Its the same model as yours. It was in really bad condition when I got it but Ive been 'restoring' it (frankenstein style) slowly over the past few weeks. Got Lubuntu 16.04 LTS PPC runniing on it at the moment.
