We are first going to review McFarlane's rendition of the Ultramarines Primaris Reiver. We are then going to compare it to JoyToy's offering to see which one is better.
I have been collecting McFarlane's Warhammer Space Marines since they came out. I love how bulky they are, and how they are compatible with Marvel Legends/Select collection. For the price, I'm really impressed with what you get. I never played Warhammer, but I just like the design of the armors. That said, I'm just as impressed by Joy Toys,' smaller versions. If not, even more. The detail that they put on the figs for the scale is impressive. However, I don't want to fall into that Rabbit hole again. I need to be consistent on my scale. These things aren't cheap. But yes, Joy Toys has my stamp of approval.
Yes, I completely I agree you are getting a fantastic action figure with McF for the price point that he has set. My only consistent gripe is that the figures look a bit bland and need more point detail. That being said, I like JT too however lately they have been having some quality assurance issues. From my experience as well as many others in the community they have encountered missing parts, errors in painting, etc. The quality has definitely gone down since the first releases so be careful. I think for the money you spend on JT, we expect better.
First of all, thanks for dropping by and commenting. Second, I portray all the flaws on the JT figures because I want you, the viewer, to make the best and most informed decision on whether or not to spend your hard earned money. That being said, if you can get over the flaws and the prices associated with JT figs, then I would say I like the size and look of the painting better than McF. Good luck!
Because of the size Macfarlane toys is still look better even if it just one toy, but Joy Toy you going to need the whole squad just to make it look imposing
Hey thanks a lot! I appreciate the compliment. I grew up playing Warhammer 40k and I’m still playing a little today (mostly just painting). Knowing the lore/ weapons of the Warhammer universe definitely helps my action figure reviews!
@@SpruesNStuds This is great. I wanted to join the hobby for about ten years and finally started in 8 ed, when my friend brought me an Agressors kit from Germany. In that moment I've understood - it's now or never. It is a joy to see how many people in the world enjoy this hobby, and especially awesome that you are still with us. And yes, imo you're one, if not the one only reviewer, who actually experienced in the lore AND action figures altogether. So thanks for that!
Welcome to the Grim Dark! Even though the universe is quite dystopian and well, rather depressing, the whole concept is still awesome. I know that you will enjoy the hobby for sure as the miniatures are of the highest quality possible. As I said, Legos and Warhammer are my life now. I am not going anywhere with these 2 hobbies any time soon!
Lol! The nice thing is that you can do whatever you want right? Indeed, both action figure makers have their pluses and minuses but it's always fun to compare.
Mine had the scratch on the pauldron too. Yeah, if I want 'battle damage' I'll pull out the scribing tools and make my own. Sucks if you want a whole squad...with all the same battle damage?
@@SpruesNStuds I do (and do not) like the JoyToy's ability to take the mag out of the Bolters. It's cool, but I know I'm going to lose at least one. The other McFarlane Reaver comes with the knife, but a plain backpack. I just swapped backpacks...and heads...and repainted.
@@greybeardgamer2067 that’s the beauty of these action figures as well as the GW miniatures themselves. You can mix and match the parts however much you want
If you are someone who loves to customize/paint your figures (like most Warhammer fans), Mcfarlane's figure seems like a good "blank" canvas that you can use to do whatever you want given its availability and price Edit: and you did exactly that LOL, I just saw the video
Yes, McF figures are exactly like blank canvas for sure. I would customize/ paint my action figures a lot more if I did not have a massive grey pile of unpainted GW Space Marine miniature shame to get through.
I hope Google translate works...Thank you first of all for watching my videos. Yes, I agree in most cases that JoyToy is better than McFarlane. I would hope that JoyToy would be because they are at least twice as expensive.
Yes it's supposed to be there I have one and I can send I usually wouldn't recommend it but not often if you don't care but hey I'm a collector what do I know I'm into detail though
The McFarlane figures are a bargain compared to Joy Toy. The problem is McFarlane doesn't seem to want to represent every unit in the multiple factions. Moreover, accuracy on some of the Xeno line is not good. Their Orks look terrible. Now if they chose to represent every unit accurately like Joy Toy I would buy from them primarily for the figures. I would still go to Joy Toy for the Dreadnoughts and machinery.
I totally agree. They are an extreme bargain compared to JT and definitely Bandai. However, you get what you pay for which is a rather bland action figure devoid of any depth such as shading or highlights. Give these action figure manufacturers more time because I think that more Xenos factions will be coming out. From what I hear, these collabs are making a ton of money so there isn’t any reason to stop.
But I custom my McFarlane Space marines or any kind of warhammer McFarlane toys especially I don't know how to paint it without paint coming off if you can make a video on that that would be nice
But I would love to see your company have perfect Warhammer figures sometimes at least something I can say I'm proud of kind of like my friend fog lane studios
I agree with you on that one. I suppose that for others here, they may not want to devote the time to paint/ repaint/ retouch their action figures and would like them to come as is but hey, to each their own.
Joytoy really messed up on the scale of these Warhammer Ultramarines though, they should've been as big as their new Sorrow Expeditionary Forces (Exosuit Soldiers), now on pre-order.
mcfarlane has gotten really lazy as of late when it comes to paint. they used to be all about the dry brush and little painted details. I'd like to get some of the joytoy figures but they're just too small for the price and don't scale with anything I have.
Really? I haven’t had that much experience with McFarlane action figures until they started producing WH40K stuff. It sucks to hear that they used to put in more details into their figures because all the Warhammer stuff is well…flat looking ie no highlights or shading at all. I don’t disagree with you on the price of the JT stuff. For what we are getting, they need to be cheaper.
@@SpruesNStuds yeah, go look up pictures of older spawn figures or the movie maniacs line, great paint work though back then they had next to no articulation. but in terms of paint work they were on par with NECA.
@@buzzsawgr81 I prefer my old school McFarlane to the few new ones I have now. Back in the day McFarlane was hungry to make a name for himself in action figures.
I agree with you on that one. I feel like the McF figures are unfinished. If you are bored enough, I ended up painting up a McF Raven Guard marine in a recent video.
No worries. You are not wrong. At the price point that McF offers, there is not too much to complain about. I myself find McF figures to be a bit too bland for me. JT on the other hand offers more depth and detail than McF at a higher price point. There is also the problem of quality assurance issues with JT. I rather deal with the quality issues and have in my opinion a better figure. However, that’s just my opinion and I respect everyone else’s.
@@JacksCreates They are cheap in some ways ie mostly the painting that goes on the figure. There is a trade off in that the joints are WAY more sturdy than their JT counterparts. There are definitely positives and negatives to both figures for sure. I suppose it boils down to preference in the end.
