Rainbowmealworms is a great feeder insect supplier. I've been buying from them for 4 years and have never had a problem. They are also 2 hours from me (located in Los Angeles) and I've stopped in to their shop (pre-covid) and they are so helpful and friendly. They even have a shop lizards that freeroam!
so i should be getting my leopard gecko within a week and i’ve been watching ur channel and doing research for over a month now and you have been so so much help! thank you very much
Funny you posted this today. Last couple days I've been thinking my white dwarf Isopod colony never established when I set everything up 8-9 months ago, I hadn't seen any. I look in the Viv an hour ago, and they're everywhere suddenly.
I’ve made an attempt at setting up a waxworm breeding setup. Hoping it works. I also have trays to keep mealworms in, the beetles do breed and produce offspring in their tray but it’s not a dedicated breeding setup. Hope your setup turns out well
I recommend getting insects from Josh’s Frogs on the internet in a crisis. It has wonderful variety and shipping is easy depending on where you live. I’m not sure if they ship to the EU but if I had a guess they do!
I love your new merch! The feeder insect tips have helped me since I’m starting a mealworm breeding colony and it’s not going to plan 👍🏽 Edit: I ordered some of those pods and I am so excited to get them 😂
Thank you :) Aww nice. From my experience, though they are made to stack, I feel there's better air flow when you don't stack them, so the pods dont get too humid.
“Mario worms” Me:ITS ME MARIO WORM Edit:WOAH WHERE DID ALL THE LIKES COME FROM!?!? (IVE NEVER HAD THIS MUCH) Edit 2:WHY DO I HAVE 29 LIKES!?!? THIS DIDNT MEAN TO BY FUNNY!!! Edit 3: 35 likes...... OMG MY FIRST TIME GETTING THIS MUCH!!!
Hi your videos are brilliant learned so much I was thinking could you use the green tray for the pupa they will turn in to Beatles lay Eggs and they will fall through holes in to bottom layer and can be just tipped in to the meal warm pod when they hatch ? May not work just a thought can’t wait to see how it go’s ❤️😊
Thanks for this! I've been wanting to breed mealworms but never knew what to do it in. Also, I may be getting a new female Tangerine leopard gecko this summer and I'd like to thank you for helping me out so much with my first leo. He is thriving and has a DHP!
Those look super neat! Very stackable and handy. I recently changed my mealworm substrate to eco earth, with the container having tons of ventilation holes and I take out the carrot i give them every few days.. but it still smells of mold?? Do you know what might be causing this and will a bit of mold hurt my worms or become toxic for my crestie to eat?
Hiya! I got a baby crestie this year! I'd just like to say that you have helped me so much understanding crested geckos so much more. I only have one question. How big/How much should they weigh before being fed insects? I'd love to feed her insects when she is a little bigger as I want to get her used to them now, so she grows with the correct nutrients so I get a happy and healthy gecko! Once again, thank you! :)
I give my mealworms wood shavings but the crickets I don’t - might try that. But it makes them hard to catch as some are tiny still (apparently small/mediums are tiny lol)
Offer a humid hide and give her rough objects (such as cork bark and stones) to rub on. You can also temporarily raise the humidity of the whole enclosure as long as it doesn’t stay high for too long.
You should try mealworms, they are great. We initially started eating them because the geckos didn't want to and know we actually breed mealworms for our own consumption. We just think it's weird because we typically don eat a lot of crawly creatures in our culture :)
I suggest in the usa to go to joshes frogs, occasionally they given you almost pupating waxworms and calciworms (on there it's phoenix worms and black solder fly larvae) but normally it's fine and they have a pretty big selection, although I wouldn't suggest the leopard gecko feeder bundle if you only have one leopard gecko but instead just getting smaller amounts of the things cus I have two geckos but one of them are a picky eater and didn't even try most of the food
Hey I have a question about a leopard shed when mine sheds and gets stuck shed on her toes or over her eyes to where she can't open them should I intervene?
Get some tweezers, a q-tip/cotton bud. Soak her in some warm water and then gently take off the shed on her eyes with tweezers and do a rolling motion on her toes with the q-tip/cotton bud :)
@@nightinggale6470 He is pretty picky when it comes to food, so it's more difficult to feed him like 5 different types of food. The only insects he likes are mealworms, crickets and waxworms. I feed him 4 wax worms every 4 months, so he doesn't get fat. I have tried every insect out there, but he is very healthy and doing great in his new 60 gallon tank. His insects are dusted with calcium and vitamins so he is getting the nutrition he needs!
I have one question. When i came to my terrarium I saw my gecko while he was tail wiggling and mouth oppening and closing. He doesnt have enigma syndrome simptoms. But what is going on with his mouth and tail. Was he scared or what?
This was very helpful, I have been watching your videos for about a year now, but I still have had trouble with understanding how to take care of the feeder insects. Also I am getting a Leo in 3 months.
Hey Rebecca, I have been a very big fan of your account for a while now and I just first off want to say that I really respect what you are doing on here and for spreading correct information. Anyways, I really do trust your judgement and if it is not too much to ask I have a few questions that I only feel comfortable asking you as I am moving my leopard gecko to a bioactive setup. My tank size is a 36x18x12 exo terra and I am currently using a large heat mat but I know that a deep heat projector would be ideal. Now the only thing I am worried about is that my tank might be too low for a deep heat projector and the last thing I want is to burn my lil baby (i watched you video all about uvb, deep heat projectors, etc). So I was wondering if there is any way I could get a heat mat to work in a bioactive setup. I know you once used one in Ziggy's very first bioactive setup but I know that you did not add any kind of a drainage layer then but I was planning to add one for safe measures. So I really need your help dividing if a deep heat projector would work or how I could get my current heat mat to work. While we are on the topic, if I were to find a way for a deep heat projector to work, would his only source of heat be to bask on the slate or would the area/ hide underneath be a source of warmth too. The reason so am asking this is because my gecko is a bit shy (I guess you could say) and is not a big fan of standing out in the open as he prefers darker small areas to sleep in. This of course my completely change when or if the projector is offered to him as I know you said your geckos had a change in behavior as well, by the way they are absolutely adorable. And my last question (I know, I am really sorry this is so long haha), but is there any bioactive substrate you can recommend that compares to Earthmix Arid? I have spent ages trying to find a way to get it to the U.S. but unfortunately it can't be done haha. Earthmix arid is really the only substrate that I trust and that I know will promote plant growth and be safe for my geckos, I've heard some good things about the bio dude substrate but I would love your input and suggestions on the situation. Anyways, I apologize this is so long but I just wanted to thank you for always inspiring me to be a better gecko owner and thanks to you I am always finding ways to improve his life so he can continue to thrive. In fact you are actually the reason I got a leopard gecko in the first place so thanks you so, so much. And by the very small chance that you do end up seeing this, I hope you have a wonderful day :)
I’m not Rebecca but I can answer your questions. I have a deep heat projector with a 24x18x12 tank, so you can make it work with a 12” tall tank. However, an enclosure that’s at least 18” tall would be ideal (to accommodate for climbing enrichment, a thick substrate layer, and overhead heating). You cannot use a heat mat. I actually recommend using a halogen bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat, the levels of infrared a and b they produce are more natural and beneficial than DHPs. Overhead heating can generally heat the inside of hides (depending on the hide) but it’s not the end of the world if they don’t. As long as you provide enough coverage around the basking spot (with plants, branches, etc.) your gecko should be comfortable basking. The bio dude’s substrate is good but overpriced. Zoo med’s reptisoil is a good option. The cheapest option would be to make your own mix. 60% organic top soil without fertilizer and 40% playsand is a good mix. You can add excavator clay as well if you want.
Your welcome. They do specials on multiple tub’s which is great if your geckos like a variety . The dark substrate you thought of is a brilliant idea .
Have you ever tried silkworms? Heard they are super nutritious and geckos suppose to love it. I just got some, ordered 80 in micro size since it's the same price as around 30 of medium size which is good for geckos. I actually counted them yesterday while moving to other container and they sent me 421 😅 just need to wait a bit for them to get bigger. What are your thoughts on silkworms?
I’m not Rebecca, but I can confirm that they’re super nutritious and most geckos love them. My girl goes crazy for ‘em. They’re great for variety! 421 is a lot of silkworms. Keep in mind that they only eat food made from mulberry leaves and that they can die fairly easily unfortunately, so you’ve gotta be careful with them.
Could you use coco choir(eco earth) as substrate for them? Or organic potting soil? Those are the only things available here, except grains, and I am really interested to try something different!
@@nightinggale6470 Thank you! I was planing on putting the food in shallow containers anyway, so that's fine. Been feeding oats for years(I bake them a bit first), changed to bran in the worm bins(adults still on oats), and now I have a moth infestation. So eager to try something else entirely xD Not sure if I can find the things you suggested, but I'll try. Thank you again :)
Great video, as always 😊 I'm wondering what the benefits of separation is, as my mealworm farm is all life stages in one bin but I'm always looking to improve it!
Thanks :) Yeah I thought I'd give it a go, but previously I'd keep them together. I think it's so you have the pupas hatch out into beetles, the beetles breed, you move them on, and so you have a new tub full of mealworms.
Crickets are a good staple, but they should have a varied diet. Roaches, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae can be fed regularly. Superworms and hornworms can be fed occasionally.
Hello I got my leopard gecko in June of 2020 and it has almost been a year. He has grown but he is definitely not full size. What should I do to help him grow. I feed home crickets 2 large a day and calcium powder. What should I do? Please help me also when is the best time to feed them?
Vary his diet. You can feed him roaches, silkworms, black soldier fly larvae, hornworms, and occasional mealworms and superworms. Dust with calcium every other feeding and multivitamins every three feedings. Feed him as many feeders as he’ll eat in fifteen minutes, 5-8 is a good amount. Once they’re at least a year old they should be fed every 3-4 days. Between 6-12 months, every other day. You can feed them any time of day but it’s often best to feed them in the late evening/at night when they’re active.
I have always been wondering if you recommend hornworms for leopard geckos. I have never seen hornworms on your channel so I was hesitant to try it. I haven't tried it yet for my geckos. Are they healthy? P.S. You are so awesome and take care of your geckos so well!!!! We all really appreciate you!!!! Stay safe!!! 😊
@@nightinggale6470 that’s why you freeze than bake them, it kills certain bacteria in the oats, and the mealworms just digest it, and why it’s smart to remove the oats from your mealworms and feed them more vitamin rich foods before giving the, to your reptiles.
@@henrycheesecakepotato5042 freezing and baking don’t remove the phytic acid, and you still risk the mealworms eating the oats. There are better options such as soil.
I've recently had some grain mites in with my morio worms and they spread into the cupboard that I keep all of my feeder insects in. I have been working on getting rid of them with really hot soapy water but it's taking a very long time, do you have any tips or anything I can try to speed up the process?
Hi leopard gecko I’m a huge fan. I have one question which if I live in Canada where lol 4 months of the year is winter and like 5 months are summer and then the rest of the months are spring and fall what temperatures do I set my leopard geckos tank to cause the weather changes a lot during the year please let me know thanks so much! Ps love your videos
I live in Canada as well. The basking spot should be 90-95 (or 33-35°C) year round. The cold side is fine at room temperature. A temperature drop at night is fine as well.
hi! I know this isn't really related to the video topic but I recently moved into a new house and my three-year-old leopard gecko (four in a few months) got moved from a 20-gallon to a 40-gallon tank, he hasn't seemed to be enjoying nor staying in his warm hide, I don't know if he likes it or just needs a different hide. everything from his recent enclosure was moved to this one, with an additional 2 plants. Do you have any idea on why this is happening (the hide has an entrance and an exit)? Thanks!
I’d try a different hide. Many geckos prefer ones with one entrance because they’re more secure and less exposed. Make sure the temps are all good as well.
I have a question about my crestie's poo. My crestie is 6 months old (I don't know if it is male or female but the breeder said it was most likely male) and his poo is getting drippy. (The actual.poo) and very smelly. He eats 1-2 crickets along with fruit (rapashy and pangea) every day. I've had him for 2 1/2 months so I don't think he has a parasite or sickness. He acts normal and happy (jumping and drinking water). I think it will pass, but I was just wondering what you thought. I've done some research, but haven't really found anything on stinky poo lol. Thanks so much and love your videos!! (Lyra/Lira inspired me to get a crestie btw. He is the one in my profile picture!)
Hi Rebecca I’m getting a leopard gecko called jazz soon now I have led lights in my bed room is that alright if I have that in my bedroom and it might be on the color red or green and is that ok?
I love your vids is it possible if you could do a night vision camera video time lapse if you have one because I rarely see my lizard it is a leopard gecko and is that normal I have just put her in a new bio active enclosure 50 gallon thank u
I know this video isn't about geckos but today I am getting a leapord gecko coming from a home who didn't want him and he didn't shed any properly any tips on what I could do once he gets used to me?
Also weird question but, do you have houseplants? the mites moved onto my plants and i'm worried that they will damage them. Do you know anything about grain mites and plants and if it would be bad?
They shouldn't really effect them, theyll die off without a food source and they only live off grains. I got rid of my mite infestation by putting my mealworms in a big tub and simply not refreshing the oat substrate. Once their food source ran out they died off 😊
@@5tephannie no problem 😊 Either way it wouldnt hurt to wipe your plant and the pot over once or twice a day with some soapy water or isopropyl alcohol to keep the horrible little things at bay. Also if you put a thick rim of vaseline around the plant pot they wont be able to get past it and onto your plants 😊
Off topic but basically my crested gecko is one year old and he looks like a baby we weighed him and it says 30 but he doesn't look 30 at all what should I do as this is my first gecko and I don't know what the problem is
It’s not recommended to breed for multiple reasons: -leopard geckos are extremely overbred as it is. It’s not worth it unless you have a rare morph. -if you don’t know the exact genetics of your geckos they absolutely should not be bred. -it’s extremely expensive. You need to be be prepared to keep and babies that don’t sell. Keep vet bills in mind as well. -it takes a toll on the female, and there’s a risk of her becoming eggbound.
Hey I have a question so I'm 12 years old and for sometime soon or maybe my 13th birthday I want to get a leopard gecko. Do you think I should get one or get some other reptile and wait on one? Or another way to put it is can a 12 year old take care of a leo?
I got my first leopard gecko when I was 12, and another (and a snake) when I was 13. You can get a gecko as long as you can afford them (get a job or make sure your parents are willing/able to pay for everything). Set money aside for emergency vet bills. Do extensive research before getting one (there’s loads of outdated information still circulating unfortunately). Good sources of info include the Advancing Herpetological Husbandry Facebook group, the reptile amino on the app amino, and reptifiles.com. Also have a plan for what’ll happen to the gecko when you go to college. Will your parents care for them?
I just got my first leopard gecko a couple days ao, (i've been doing research for years) but now that I have it im really scared that he won't ever trust me because he's really skittish. Is this normal for them? btw I love your channel:)
20 gal LONG is the bear minimum 30+ is great and 40 tends to be the perfect size , you can always go bigger and bigger , there’s really no limit , and very large bins make great enclosures too
There are thermostats you can get with a night drop module, such as vivarium electronics. However: I strongly recommend using a halogen bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat instead, they’re far more natural and beneficial than heat mats. They produce infrared a and b like the sun, allowing for deep tissue heating. Whereas heat mats only produce infrared c, the least natural and beneficial type of heat. Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option.
@@georgiaholliegrace386 yep, instead of a mat. Depending on the material the warm hide is made of (heat conducting materials such as slate and some resin hides are good), overhead heating can heat the inside, but it’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t. In the wild reptiles naturally hide to escape heat anyways. And, as long as you provide enough plant coverage around the basking spot, they’ll be comfortable basking. For more information I recommend joining the Advanced Herpetological Husbandry Facebook group. The heating section in the Reptifiles.com leopard gecko care guide also has great info.
Mealworms aren’t healthy for their main diet and should make up no more than 25% of their diet. Feed mainly live crickets or roaches, with different types of worms for variety. Feed as many feeders as they’ll eat in fifteen minutes. Although I wouldn’t feed any more than 8 mealworms at a time.
I don't know if you still reply to comments but I have a question. Backround info: I have had my leo for about 9 months on reptile carpet. We will be switching to eco earth. I want to do a full on bioactive tank. Question: is there a way to get them used to being around all the bugs? I feel like my leo personality would want to eat many of them. What Is the best way to transition?
Don’t use eco earth. It’s dusty, hard on their joints, unnatural, and not a good option for a bioactive substrate. A mix that’s 60% organic top soil without fertilizer and 40% playsand would be good. Regarding the cleanup crew: a lot of the time they’ll be hiding under the leaf litter. Your gecko might eat a few but that’s not a huge deal.
@@nightinggale6470 if I am keeping the humidity right and the floor sprayed it's not dusty. Thanks for the suggestion, but there isn't much research on playsand and I'm good with the coconut fiber. Plus any loose substrate will be just as hard on their joints. We use eco earth for our other reptile, and we know how to use it. Thanks for the tip about the crew tho
First you need to figure out why she isn’t eating. What’s the hot spot temperature and is your thermometer digital or analog? Is she losing weight? Is she new?
Eco earth isn’t a good substrate since it tends to be dusty and hard on their joints. It’s unnatural and may be more likely to cause impaction than a natural substrate. New geckos should be quarantined on paper towel for the first six weeks to monitor their health. After, I recommend reptisoil or a mix that’s 60% organic top soil without fertilizer and 40% playsand. Just make sure that your husbandry is correct (hot spot of 92-95, ideally overhead heating, etc.) and your gecko will do great.
Hey!, I’m interested in getting a leopard gecko as I wanted to know if getting them from pet stores is okay to do and how to spot if they are in bad condition you don’t need to respond though! - Amanda
Avoid chain petstores like PetSmart and Petco. Local petstores can be ok if their animals are healthy and their care is decent. The leopard geckos should be alert and have a healthy looking tail. The gecko should not be too skinny (although keep in mind that babies naturally have smaller tails). They shouldn’t have MBD or any stuck shed. If you want to be safe, find a reputable breeder. Check morph market, just research the breeder before buying. Avoid large scale breeders like BHB and underground reptiles. You can also check Craigslist, or go to a reptile expo.
@@nightinggale6470 Thanks! This helped a lot and I will try finding a local pet store (if I ever convince my parents) and I know what to look for because of you!

@@sheldonreed837 starter kits tend to be pretty bad and should be avoided. To answer your question, leopard geckos need more floor space than height, but they should still have some height to allow for climbing, a good layer of substrate, and enough space between the basking spot and lamp(s). A 40 gallon or bigger is best.
Please help. My gecko has 4 years, and has 30-33 grams for 3 years, female , a terrarium is about 40 gallons, has a hotter and colder part, regularly upholstery, a little less eaten but she is not skinny . Is her weight problem?
One more question, I have a foil heater that's in the coconut fiber substrate, the surface temperature is 31-33, but it's 25-28 in the air above the warmer part. So, should the air temperature be 31-33, or is it okay like this?
@@urosmilanovic2878 those temps sound pretty good (the air temp should always be cooler than the hot spot temp), I’d aim for 33-35 for the hot spot though. They produce infrared a and b like the sun, allowing for deep tissue heating. Whereas heaters on the bottom of their tank only produce infrared c. Philips PAR halogen flood bulb is a good option. Be sure to remove the stuck shed, you can give him a soak/sauna. Is his humid hide see-through? What substrate are you using inside it? Keep the humidity of the entire enclosure between 30-55%, measured by a digital hygrometer. You can spike it temporarily when he’s in shed.
@@DwarfOfTheNorth1 Well you should not feed darkling/mealworm beetles because they taste bad and have hard to digest shells. A good rule of thumb I use is the food should be no bigger than the space beetween their eyes
