Is Tennessee all a bunch of rednecks?
Does everybody in Tennessee listen to country music?
And does everyone in Tennessee have a truck with a gun rack?
We’ll answer those questions and a whole lot more. So grab your moonshine and yer huntin dog, we’re gonna unbox the state of Tennessee!
Well would you look at this. It’s a good ole fashioned fox hunt. The dogs are set loose to and then they try to find the scent of a fox. When they find a fox, the guys on horses will shoot it. It’s kind of an elite social status thing in Tennessee, and the tradition goes way back in this state’s history.
But not everyone in Tennessee is a fox hunter. In fact, the tradition is sort of dying out here. That’s because Tennessee isn’t the same state it once was. A lot of this state’s once proud traditions are kinda going away in many areas. Which is a shame.
But more on that later. To get a complete overview of the state of Tennessee, we need to look at the state from a higher level, and then drill down into each region to learn more.
This is Tennessee. It’s a very long state, and an oddly shaped one, too. Tennessee borders 8 other states. That’s the most of any other state, except Missouri, which also borders 8 other states.
As you’ll see, the state can roughly be divided up into three separate areas. West Tennessee, Middle Tennessee and East Tennessee. These are called the Grand Divisions. Each region is way different than the other part, and the people who live in each region all have different backgrounds and cultures. Which makes Tennessee so special.
We'll talk about Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga and more.

Don't go to Tennessee to change it. They don't need you. They are just fine as they are.

As someone who lives in a small town in eastern Tennessee in the foothills of the Smokies I can tell u there's no other place I would rather live!!! Beauty of mountains, lakes, camping, hunting, hiking, small town living and great Gatlinburg tourist destination. UT is loved by all and we celebrate everything. Nothing unusual to get behind a tractor on the road or see deer in your backyard lol.

Tennessee is so underrated, it is fun, cheap, plenty of safe places.

I’m a Long Island, New Yorker and i’m moving to Tennessee with the full intention of assimilating. The reason my family and I are leaving NY is to join the beauty and simplicity of The Volunteer State. I hope they accept us and the handful of Republican votes we’re bringing.

Do not move to or live in Tennessee. Literally the state legislature is overbearing and tries to control virtually every aspect of your life that or make it worst every year. The current Governor is terrible and only cares about corporate profits. The wealth and health disparities are some of the worst too. TN tries to boast all about comfortable living and great jobs but that is only for a small few meanwhile the rest of us suffer from crappy paying jobs.

I moved to Tennessee from the North 50 years ago. It is absolutely different and took quite a while to become acclimated to the way things work. I had never even heard of a "dry county". Alcohol at a wedding reception was unheard of. When you pass a stranger on the road you "throw your hand up" in greeting. The South is a different place and has different ways. After 50 years of reflection I believe it is those oddities that make it charming. I will never leave.

I might not be American but all the times I’ve been in the USA , I spent most of my time in Tennessee. It’s far from being perfect but it was so beautiful that stole my heart.

Obviously, you did not actually SEE East Tennessee. So much more history and beauty beyond the tourist crap. Moved here from S FL over 20 yrs ago. Never looked back.

I was born and raised in Nashville and in my late 40's have lived pretty much my entire life in the middle TN area. You did a really good job of describing TN and it's various regions and you are quite right that they are all considerably different culturally. I also have to agree with your commentary on Nashville. I won't lie, I'm heartbroken over what has happened and continues to happen to Nashville. I don't want to discourage folk from moving to this state or city, but that's not really what's happening. The culture of Nashville and downtown Nashville has been absorbed somehow (almost overnight it seems) into the Borg Collective (Star Trek) of another, alien/foreign civilization and culture. Downtown Nashville used to be a really nice place. I made the mistake about a year and a half ago of taking my 6 and 8 year old children to downtown Nashville on a Saturday morning at 10am to see the pedestrian bridge, river and Fort Nashboro which they'd never seen. As we crossed the bridge to downtown to go to the Fort, I was appalled at the environment I had brought my children into. It simply wasn't appropriate for them.... at 10am on Saturday morning people!! It was almost like, or maybe just like taking my young children into Mardi Gras... I would NEVER have had any concerns of things like that 10-15 years ago. Nashville has now become the home of people with little to no morals, little to no courtesy, little to no southern TN friendliness and respect, and I hate it. Though I do not hate my state, the shift in culture, the crazy increase in population (over 700 people are moving to middle TN every.single.week...), gentrification, hipsters who despise real native Tennesseans (check Nashville forums and see their selfish, hateful, disrespectful attitudes and comments on this) and more have me wondering what to do. Younger people than me are moving to the area, buying homes, demolishing them and building $500,000 - $1.5M houses and driving the cost of everything up beyond the local native's ability to absorb. Taxes in Davidson County are INSANE due to their mismanagement of tax dollars over years... I'm educated with a degree in applied science, I'm a family man, I'm a deep thinker, I'm respectful to others who agree or disagree, but I grieve what is going on in my hometown and I'm concerned about what the future holds here.

I asked my local Tennessean friend about what Nashville is like now since I moved away from there 10 years ago and he said, "Nashville is now overrun with carpetbaggers with shitty tattoos and shitty attitudes,''

It is a pretty good summary. One thing missed was a mention about the TVA, Oak Ridge National Lab and the Manhattan project. It's a pretty interesting part of the states history. it is a reason there are many well educated people in Knoxville area along with the University of Tennessee.

I've lived in East TN my whole life. It's a beautiful, comfortable place to live for the most part. It's not all glamorous, but I've rarely felt unhappy at my home.I moved from a small, rural county about 15 years ago to Knoxville. At first I loved the convenience of being 5-10 minutes to anything I could need, but now with the area blowing up it's getting to be too much. I see myself moving back to a smaller county on the outskirts of Knoxville in the next 3-5 years, so I can have room to breath!

Didn't mention it in the video, but Oak Ridge, TN (outside Knoxville) is where they worked toward developing the atomic bomb and was a production site for the Manhattan Project. It is a very interesting area full of history.

Been living in Memphis for a few years now. Everything he said is pretty spot on. Memphis definitely has it rough parts of town, but it's still been able to hold on to it's identity through all of the struggles. There is definitely a lot to do here and plenty of culture. BBQ is fantastic here as well! It's been growing in the last few years due in part to booming biomedical sector and efforts by the city government to try and change things around. If y'all are driving through, definitely stop by. You'll be surprised by what this city has to offer.
