@@dragonheart175 The move has been extremely difficult, as to be expected internationally during a pandemic. We wanted to take her, but due to Covid shipping restrictions it would have put her life in danger and we weren't willing to risk her. Plus finding a place letting agency that would rent to internationals that also allowed reptiles was a dead end. I couldn't be more thrilled that Emily and Ed were willing to give her the best home I could imagine.

i've never even heard of the procedure in reptiles. like, it makes sense (especially when a snake is especially important to a family or expensive) but it's gotta be a pricey microchip insertion. cats and dogs are easy because they have such stretchy skin but for snakes? wild.
@tyneblackburn553
@tyneblackburn553 3 года назад
@@UCVWnuJnz0LguhAS_MYI3few It actually wasn't that hard to do. Cost the same as having a cat or small dog microchipped. Just had a reptile vet do it. They pushed in between her scales and inserted it. She wasn't happy, but she shed about a week later and it stopped bothering her by the next day. The tail was the only part that didn't come off in one piece during that shed, but the spot was all healed up. After her next shed you could barely even find it.

@Paige Loren it would be a years long project but they could ways find a normal to breed with, and then hold some back to breed with when they've matured, because every baby would be het for momma's morphs, if I'm not mistaken.
@nakaylahale691
@nakaylahale691 3 года назад
@Paige Loren I'm not sure if the genes are recessive or not myself. I've learned a lot from Snake Discovery but I'm certainly not an expert. It seems like most morphs are recessive, so I'm just kinda assuming so given that they said Onyxia has a combination of two different morphs going on.

Red bellies are my favorite snake! I'm from Northwest Iowa and growing up I found tons of these snakes in my area! Not every year, but when I did see some it was usually a couple every year. One year my dad found a large one, and she was a gravid female and we found out they were live bearers! I would love to keep some captive bred Northern Red Bellies, they are such a prominent snake of my life and bring me such joy as such sweet little snakes.

As an Australian, associating the word “Red belly” with snake brings up a lot of red flags.
@denniwalters7597

A red bellied /black snake at a local BBQ, would get people scurrying in all directions in Australia. However! They are stunningly marked with black shining scales , black eyes, usually a red belly, however some are found with pale pink or white bellies.. They can grow over a couple of metres and can get quite thick around the middle. Like us all, depending on the food supply...They like frogs and mice and are fairly placid. However they are venomous and look very intimidating when flared up .. Not for handling as a novice..

I could never have a snake, so I'm sorta living vicariously through you and Ed! :) I've enjoyed going back and watching all your videos and learning more and more about snakes-- I even started painting small portraits of snakes and its been so fun! I hope to have a whole rainbow of snake portraits even if their colors don't entirely exist in the wild. :)

Onyxia is definitely my favourite 😍 about 6 or 7 years ago, my mum was getting me my first snake (my absolute dream pet) for my birthday. We live in Australia so it was a beautiful male diamond python, and I had named him Onyx after the reptile shop owner (who seemed really nice at the time) mentioned the name when we were talking about me taking Onyx home and my mum was organising all the things we needed and adding up the overall cost (which ended up being about $600 for the snake and around $700 for the handmade enclosure the owner suggested, not including the snake hook, lights, food, my snake licence and more). He offered to hold the snake whilst my snake licence was going through and I was waiting for it to be delivered in the mail. The enclosure turned up and was horrible. It had nails sticking out the bottom (the sharp end too, not the head of the nail), the thermostats didn’t work anymore and the whole thing was pretty busted up. We were obviously quite disappointed but were prepared to fix it up with some help from family to make it habitable for Onyx. I tried not to let the enclosure get me down because I was so excited to get my boy home. I had done tons of research and was ready for this experience. Finally my licence had arrived in the mail and we tried to contact the shop owner who was holding Onyx for us (at a cost of $50 a week) until I had my reptile licence. We tried contacting him and waiting for him to respond. Then contacting again in case he didn’t see the message. He never replied. He took Onyx, he took our money, he didn’t even give us an explanation. He offloaded a crappy enclosure to us and made us pay for it, as well as charging us $50 a week for a snake that would only be costing maybe $5 a week for a fuzzy frozen thawed mouse, which he had actually said directly to us, that housing the snake wouldn’t cost much after the initial purchase of all the necessities, besides of course the electricity to run their lights and purchase their food (or of course vet bills if needed in the future, but you know what I mean haha 😅). It was honestly devastating. I felt the loss of an animal I cared about before even having him in my care. I’d gotten to meet Onyx a few times and he was absolutely wonderful. I was so grateful that I would have this wonderful animal in my life and then it was just taken without a word. It’s easier now but it’s still a lingering anger that this person would do that to a 15/16 year old and her mother who was scrounging up every dollar to pay for it. The dude ended up closing his reptile store and opening a gelato ice cream smoothie bar or something 😂😂😂 I just want to say I’m so glad to see people like Emily and Ed who actually love these reptiles and care about the people they’re going to when they sell as well. They’re reliable and caring and it’s amazing. ❤️

I feed my redbellies mostly frozen thawed black field slugs off the end of coffee stir sticks, and they are thriving in their bioactive planted tank for over a year now.
