Finally. So many people claim these things don’t work when they just don’t know how to use them. It really is a RTFM situation for the GameShark Pro. ;) Each security CIC/lock out chip has a different code entry point so the key code tells the GameShark what memory address to hijack with its own boot code. The console’s PIF-NUS chip reads the CIC-NUS chip in the cartridge using pass-through pins, much like a Doctor V64’s Emulation Adapter. The GameShark likely lets the console read the game’s header straight through the GameShark since the code entry point is specified there too.

You are right. The n64 GS wasn't as easy to use as most of the other GS out there... and user error gets mistaken for "Bad GS cart." Thanks for the info regarding when and how the memory check gets used.

If you Madden 64 or Mario 64 ? That's all you need to unbrick them .had game sharks since they first came out . If you multiple versions ot one ? Keep them in individual ziploc bags

Just wanted to drop a comment. I recently dug out my N64 and started purchasing games to rebuild my collection. I purchased a Game Shark that was not working after cleaning (stuck on 8). I came here to see what the fix was and as soon as I saw you suggesting to change games it unlocked on the first game I tried. Thanks for the video, very informative!

Thanks for this. At first none of it worked, but after giving some things a GOOD cleaning (the carts worked fine in the n64, but just not when in the GS), I finally got the thing to unlock with, of all carts, Diddy Kong Racing hahaha

I usually put Goldeneye 007 into my gamesharks since it "resets" them every time they don't work for another game. I think you can do it with Mario 64 too since it's the default code.

WHen I get them into my shop... it's normally a failure when someone is trying to play Mario. BUT.... the next one I get, I will try golden eye.

no, the keycode thing doesn't always unbrick them. especially if the codelist gets so corrupted that it no longer boots. and since the invention of that device to reflash it is the best way to unbrick it now. soldering was the best method before that. and some people are making a list of all gameshark versions so you can put a working rom over the bricked gameshark. i like to use it to back it up and when it says warning this will erase all your data i just turn it off

Hello, and thanks for the video. I love the Princess Bride reference at the beginning, by the way. Anyway, I’ve got a N64 GameShark v3.3 that I’ve had since the console was current, and I only recently tried using it again after many years of inactivity. It exhibited pretty much the same symptoms as what you described in this video, and I did get it to unlock with Super Mario 64. However, it likes to forget games that shouldn’t require a key code. Some games still refuse to work altogether, such as Super Smash Bros. My memory could be off, but I’m pretty sure that game didn’t need a key code. Also, some cheat codes that I distinctly remember working don’t seem to work anymore, such as “Invincibility” for GoldenEye. Do you think my GameShark is just plain borked at this point?

It's a cart programmer. It can flash memory, and saves... and can back them up also. Mine is based off of Sanni's work.

when i first got mine from a game resale shop i plugged it into my console and it crashed basically as soon as startup. The menu text was glitched and everything. The second time i went in and added a code for tetrisphere and some of the letters in the code addition menu were graphically glitched. Now I'm getting the red light acting weird and not even displaying a whole number (instead of an 8 its just one small line in the lower right of the number). It also intermittently works but apparently will not start up with excitebike 64. Should I take the cartridge back or keep it?

Where these like this back in the 90's? I have vague memories of me and my brother using a Gameshark on his N64, but I don't ever remember having these problems with it. I just bought me an N64 a little over a month ago and found a v3.3. It bricks itself whenever I switch to another game or remove the Gameshark from the console, and i have to go through this whole process all over again...I just don't remember them being this bad back then.

I just purchased a game shark 3.3 trying to get it to work with WWF no mercy I've got it to start up but when I scroll through the games it freezes when I try to add no mercy into the game shark it freezes when I just tried to add a code to any game it freezes. Is this game shark dead or is there a way I can fix this.

Okay, sorry, I got confused with the key code explanation. So I have a 2.1. If I connect Shadows of the Empire for example, and then select “Key Code Entry”, I can set a random key, and then I can use that game to get it to boot everytime?

No... it will only boot once into a game other than the base code. (Mario64) If it fails to boot... it will stay in the other code. that's why people think these "Brick". If the code gets set to the wrong game... it stays there until it actually boots into it. That can happen from being corrupt... or someone simply putting it into a game they don't have.

You can use either the stack method, or trying a game from each of the key codes listed in the vid. The small box I show is for reflashing a 2.0 or higher.

This video solved so many issues for me it's unreal. I thought they were dead, but no they are just locked to that specific set of games selected. The Game Shark asks "ARE YOU SURE YOU HAVE THIS GAME?" "YES/NO" before you flash it. So you're screwed if you don't have a game from that set to turn it back on. I will also say that my v2 can't seem to boot any zelda games, there is no "ZELDA" option for a key code. Any ideas? I will look for a 3.3 version in the meantime, thank you! Reply

Do you know anything about the EU/PAL version type device called Gamebuster? I have one being i live in EU and have never gotten it to work for my games and i cant find codes online anywhere and am assuming Gameshark codes will not work with it. Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately... no. Since these are region specific... I don't think there are many in the states. BUT, I would imagine they will operate the same... just a different set of games to do the un-brick

At the beginning you said you could reflash the game shark with this *shows item and doesn't say what it is*. What is that device? I Wana reflash my 2.1 GSP and don't feel like buying 20 games to guess the key code. I've tried both zeldas, dk64, Mario 64, Pokemon stadium, Kirby, and a few others. I think I'd rather buy the flasher and re flash it.

You said Crusin World can unlock most of those game sharks? I've tried Mario 64 and 007 but those didn't unlock the two I have. Thier both above v.2. I got a 2.2 and a 3.2

It seems like the game that will most often unlock a GS that has randomly locked itself. BUT, you need games from each of the key codes to try.

I am pretty sure i have a 2.1 im not 100% sure as i only just bought it in a bundle from a friend but its the one without the pins and is a count down one. the times that i am able to get it to show an actual number its either 8 or 9 that part is random but when i get either of those numbers it doesnt ever begin to count down not sure what to do i have cleaned both game and cart tried multiple different games multiple times and nothing. please help with any suggestions that might work

I think all you need to do is refer to the list at 8:40 and try at least one game from each group. If a game isn’t listed, it’s likely in the Mario 64 group.

Yep... seems like there is only a few codes... and since the n64 GS is getting old... the books are gone, and they aren't a simple "Plug and Play" device.

I have one gameshark that doesn’t work, it’s a countdown one. It’s version 3.3.0. I tried placing the non working on top with a working Gameshark and it counts down perfectly fine, but then when I switch to a key code on my working gameshark (Zelda Ocarina of Time for example), the countdown one does not work by itself and is stuck at 8 and doesn’t count down even with the Ocarina of Time cartridge on it. Should I try a different game within the same key code? Any help would be appreciated!

Make sure the pins are clean, and try another game. Very rarely does the memory get actually corrupt.

I tried every other game and it doesn’t work and doesn’t count down, but though counts down fine when placed on top of another working GameShark I own. Tried changing the key code and even factory resetting the key code with the non working GameShark on top of the working one and nothing worked

Unfortunately... when it's bricked... you don't know what game will unlock it. So, you need one game from each of the key codes.

Give it a very good cleaning, and try the games listed in the video. If that doesn't help... then it may need a reflash, or try the "Piggyback" method to unlock it.

Can the Gameshark help you skip levels in Body Harvest? it just that I was about to finish stage 4 in level 2 but it freezes and wend I start the game every was normal but it quickly freezes again and then after that my progress got erased and I was wondering if the Gameshark can help me with that

@@juliomaldonado7979 If it freezes when it's trying to save the game... that data will be corrupt. Make sure the cartridge, and the N64 slot are clean.

Ah yes. The have to own it to unlock it dlc. Still have mine from a kid. Somehow always tried using it with OoT but no version select ever made the shark codes work in game. Finally got mad enough I prob selected a random wrong game to see what would happen. Alas, still looking. Tho outside of 007 ans zelda I dont really have other games.

I know this video is old, but i am having an issue with my Action Replay Pro, I have tested every single game that I have and it will not boot, its LED screen stays with 8. shown on its screen. I have tried the usual Mario 64 Goldeneye Banjo Kazooie Zelda OoT & MM Perfect Dark Conkers Bad Fur Day Jet Force Gemini Yoshi's Story And loads more N64 games, and it simply will not boot at all. I got it off ebay and they claimed it to be on v3.2

thank you for offering to reflash it, it never crossed my mind about where you are located, as I am in the UK so probably be costly to send them over, i was looking at possible cables that will work on modern PCs as I already have found the software to re flash any cheat cartridge rom to the cartridge, so in theory I could flash the last Action Replay Professional build to my cartridges and it also supports cheat code scanning via the pc software.@@PghGameFix

Have you tried it out with another game? There could be an issue with the actual internal memory, and it's not storing the codes. A reflash could solve the issue. (If it's a 2.0 or higher)

Once the key was set.... It needs to boot with that game. Sorry. But if you have a good relationship with a local used game store... they may be able to help.

I remember 1 time a few years ago I had a MacBook with a crack screen and it was hard to see then I brought it to Apple then they totally fixed it and I was able to see the entire screen with no more cracks showing the full ratio screen thanks to Apple.

@@PghGameFix Yes I set it to Yoshi but I own 4 games like Smash 64, Super Mario 64 Multiplayer, and Banjo Kazooie. Inserting those games didn’t fix the problem nor putting alcohol on it to clean, then I tried unplugging the console part putting it back in, then changing the memory card and that didn’t work, turning the fan on to cool the console down, pressing down Z or holding it down on a screen that’s showing red blue, yellow to the side same thing with L + R, maybe leaving the console on over night will help? I live in Phoenix and basically there is no store that is selling N64s. Why can’t GameStop be a local used game store I remember seeing a Classic DS charger that says GameStop on it that my brother and sister got a lot of years when they were little.

Hey I just picked up a game shark version 2.1 that seems to be stuck on the number 9 whenever it's turned on. Just picked up cruizin world, but didn't seem to work. I also have about a dozen other games that I've tried. Does anybody know what code 9 means? Maybe I missed something...

try cleaning the contacts very well with 90% IPA, and make sure the game boots normally without the GS

@@PghGameFix yup. I cleaned the top and bottom a few times with 99% and nothing so far. Games do work on their own. Also what does the tiny button on the front of the GS do? ok i think i did something stupid lol was trying to load cheats on mario 64 and cheats wasnt working so i guessed the gameshark (V3.3) was bricked,i chose the keycode for diddy kong racing and i pressed yes,now the gameshark wont boot and the number 8 is shown and i dont have diddy kong racing to fix it,what do i do in that case,do i have to get the game or is there an alternative solution?Thank you

You need any of the games in the list posted in the video, in the Diddy Kong Section.

Well, I see 2 comments... are you getting into it al all? If not, then try other games to get into the menu, and then you can set the key to "Mario"

You have too many codes active. Turn a few off.

If you get nothing from the display, there could be an issue with a solder joint inside, or very dirty contacts.

@@PghGameFix yeah I went to a local retro game shop and the guy there told me to try plugging a cable into the back and connecting it to a computer to try and flash it or something?

@@Pacoklein Unless you have an oldschool computer with Windows 98 or earlier... there really isn't anyway to do it. You would need a flash using a flashing tool.
