Fun fact: Slave owners (who were exceedingly wealthy people, as slaves costed millions of dollars in today's money) were exempt from the draft and were not expected to fight at all, it was the poor people who were forced to fight, so that the rich could keep their slaves and avoid tariffs on the agricultural products they were selling to Britain by the shipload. (Tariffs the US government was using to pay for infrastructure in the North, who also profited off of slavery). Which is even more fucked up than if it was mostly slave owners fighting.
Yes, my family owned no slaves, remained poor and destitute for generations because of they couldn't compete with free labor, and had many men die wearing the grey. Meanwhile if I say anything positive about the monument honoring confederate _soldiers,_ I am racist.
@@Intelwinsbigly we should have monuments honoring all who have suffered, not one or the other as that shows some kind of bias imo, like you wouldn't make a monument honoring the wehrmacht if you wanted to honor the germans who died you know
