As a Canadian I always loved John Candy, he was so funny. One of my favourites is “The Great Outdoors” with him and Dan Ackroyd another good one is “ Planes, Trains and Automobiles” with Steve Martin and John Candy. You might not realize it but if you saw Home Alone, John Candy was in it. When the mom was trying to get home ( near the end of the movie) John Candy was with the polka band that offered her a ride in the truck.

John Candy was also in "Planes, Trains and Automobiles", Cool Runnings and Home Alone. He was (RIP) a very skilled improvising comic. He was well known is Canada as a member of the Second City Tv show where played a wide variety of characters. There were a large number of members of that group that went on to international fame (Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Catherine O' Hara and others)

I am going through it with life right now, a little John Candy goes a long way. I first saw "Uncle Buck" with my dad when I was 12 years old and I cherish those memories. It's amazing to see the legacy of John and John's films live on like this. No word of exaggeration; for me John Candy has achieved Sainthood. John got his start on SCTV, which was shot for a time, in the city I live in. Jen Candy (his wonderful, loving daughter) shared an intimate 8MM home movie of the cast of SCTV playing softball in a baseball field, that holds very special import to my own childhood. It is something else being able to see someone you idolize being his naturally charming self, in a location you spent hours playing near as a kid. As the springtime sun clears those snowy Alberta fields, I might go for a walk there soon. Anyhow, "Uncle Buck" is a special movie that I will hold near my heart forever. John Candy was a beautiful soul and I feel blessed to have shared some time with him. RIP to everyone's uncle. I miss him every day.

Uncle Buck was released one year before Home Alone, I believe. It's interesting to me that John Candy had a part in Home Alone as well (the polka band leader who gives Kevin's mom a ride home in his tour van), although that character is just kind of blah for me. I only discovered Uncle Buck around 1998, so about 9 years after it was released, but although I wasn't keen on all the swearing, I loved his proactive personality and how the family situation resolved. The first role that I recognized John Candy for was his performance in Cool Runnings. I liked that movie's heart too and would enjoy seeing your reactions to it. I guess the first movie that I ever heard John Candy's performance in was Disney's 'The Rescuers Down Under' and his character was memorable in it but I didn't know who he was at the time and only realized in retrospect that it was him after seeing Cool Runnings. Two Bill Murray movies that I discovered right around the same time that I found Uncle Buck were 'Groundhog Day' and 'What About Bob?'. I'd be interested in your reactions to those as well.

Many John Hughes films are set and filmed in the same general area, namely the north shore (read: mostly affluent) suburbs of Chicago, including Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Home Alone, and this one. Hence the similar homes/neighborhoods.

When I was a kid, not only was the door unlocked (unless no one's home), but the milkman would drop off what we ordered into the kitchen, leave a bill, pick-up the payment and leave. He's thinking, "Please be a concussion generated hallucination...", Oh, it's not. ;-D RIP John Candy

@@katherinejaymes2579 yes, lived here a long time. What made me start was increased reports of cars being broken into. Or in many cases, if they were already open, just gone into and been stolen from. I figured with them getting bolder, houses would be the next step. I've always had the habit of usually locking it if I were going to be gone for any extended time though. I would regularly forget though, lol. To help with that, I am using a smart lock now. So, I can see if the door is locked from anywhere, and remote lock/unlock it as well. Plus it has the benefit of auto unlocking as I walk up to it with my phone on me.

This is Macaulay Culkin's first movie role, if I am not mistaken. John Candy was also in "Home Alone" as well. He played the musician that actually got Kevin's mother home to her son...via the back of a rental moving truck... "Home Alone" was made a year after "Uncle Buck". Macauley Culkin also appeared in John's movie "Only the Lonely" the year after they made "Home Alone" as well. Most of John Candy's roles were very similar, and he usually played the same basic character, but not always carbon copies. Some of his movies include "Summer Rental", "The Great Outdoors", "Spaceballs", ""Going Berserk", Armed and Dangerous", "Delirious", "Who's Harry Crumb?", "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles", and "Canadian Bacon". The last movie he completed was "Cool Runnings". He was still working on "Wagons East" when he passed away, and they had to edit the movie and script around the footage they already had of him to finish the film.

The parents always ask how I can get them to behave, because I threatened to smack them if they didn’t! We do that all the time. Yea & clearly they weren’t fooled by your empty threats!!! When I said it they believed it & I never laid a finger on them but years later they still don’t want to push their luck. That is parenting!!!
