This is the exact point I just made too! How on earth have they come to have that much money in the first place. I can only assume it wasn’t entirely earned by themselves, making it easier to part with!

I have multiple sclerosis that belong to a lot of support groups and like you said sometimes I'll keep getting constant messages from all these scammers or phonies and I notice we have one or two friends in common or sometimes three and I realize these phones are basically going through these peoples contacts and sending requests. I don't think that I'd fall for a scammer but rather the deal with it and constantly have to delete them I just end up blocking the friend

I knew an old lady in UK she had a nice looking really friendly "carer, driver, travel companion" for years. He was from the Phillipines and once per year he had a paid holiday and visited his wife and children there. I am not saying there was anything undue going on. But everybody was happy and she was not alone and could travel.

It is not the responsibility of the bank if people are this "stupid". The lady was so much under their spell, if the bank had called her, she would have denied it.

I retired from 25 years of banking in 2017 and we would try and talk people out of this, we would spend hours and yet they would not believe us. Even when “cheques” came back fraudulent they still wouldn’t stop sending money. It was always based on a windfall at the end. It’s a mixture of delusion and a gamble, almost like an addiction. Banks can warn but cannot stop a person from their free will to do what they want. Unless a family member gets a power of attorney or conservatorship, having said that also Banks cannot “warn” family members of a concern as that would be breaching confidentiality. Trust me these scammers know this 😡

Those aren't large sums to be transferred,, which is why the scammers wanted them done that way,, rather than in one big lump sum.

As long as they are able to take care of a pet properly, and they have the time, space, and kindness, to ensure the pet has a happy life, and no plans of any of that changing in the future. She had just sold her house and gotten moved into a not super large RV, so maybe she thought it would be better not to bring a pet into that space. Although imo even in an RV you could probably make it work. Definitely for a cat anyway, and maybe for dog possibly. It would require more stops while traveling to get out and walk around though with a dog. I just hate it when people impulse buy animals, and then don't take proper care of them or realize they made a mistake and have to rehome them. Which of course in that case the rehoming is the favorable outcome, but it's still not perfect.

She missed her brother more than her husband, poor husband, it seems to be a recurring theme with these woman, they do not seem to care about their husbands even when those husbands have looked after them and left them large sums of money, I think it’s telling re their personalities, did any of them marry for love or capable of loving someone else. In this story her brother left her the money she donated to Nigeria or Venezuela, maybe that’s why she cared more about him!

If they had Scammer Payback or another just like him in on it, he may have been able to hack her computer during the video chat call, and see if there were anything, or at least put the evidence they had directly on her computer screen so she could see it more easily. Maybe it would've hit her harder.

There's finally some political will in Australia for banks to reimburse scam victims their money regardless of how much they lost or how. The US has to start doing it, because 60% of all dating profiles across all dating sites are fake or inactive (sites aren't legally obligated to shutdown fake accounts). She gave NO MONEY to the scammers but did accept $7k really believing she was dating a real person online who "gave" her "gift" money. Her brother and SIL tried telling her it was a scammer and refused to listen, why? Her ex-husband was physically abusive. She left him when she got involved with the scammer. One day as she was chatting with her "BF" something happened to the laptop or phone on his end and the camera switched on. She saw a 20 something Nigerian man dancing with a chicken in front of a fire doing a voodoo ritual to manifest cash from his victims. She accepted the fact that she was fucked only then. She had to move 6 times trying to get away from the scammer sending her cash in boxes to move for him. Luckily for her SC and TM wanted to help her and she gave them the scammers' address in Nigeria and all the Nigerian banking info the scammer gave her. Is that enough accountability for you?

It felt passive-aggressive to me (🤷🏾‍♀️) Like -- she was embarrassed to have fallen for the scam, and extra embarrassed that her granddaughter was able to recognize a scam which she herself hadn't recognized. So her anger at herself, emerged as temporary anger at her granddaughter.

Someone said that greedy people are mor likely to get scammed. I am not sure if it is true but greed will make a person do all kinds of crazy stuff! I am not victim blaming but it is what it is.
