Human mind is amazingly good at believing what it desires to believe. These scammers take advantage of that mechanic. Some folks who are more vulnerable to their exploitation would be individuals who are lonely, grieving, mentally ill/disabled or intellectually disabled, the elderly.

I knew a lady who fell for a scam like this. The guy said his account of millions was locked because he hadn’t paid a $15,000 bank fee because he was in the hospital etc. I asked her what does YOUR bank do if you owe them fees and there’s enough money to cover it in your account? They just take it, they don’t lock your account. It’s not any different if it’s more money. 🙄

Good point. Scammer geography is often a little off. I live in southern California, and “my scammers” (people I toy with to waste their time) will almost always say something like “I come from California, San Francisco” (if you really lived here you’d never say it like that, you’d say “I live in San Francisco”.

If he’s rich he doesn’t need money. First red flag. You don’t sell products thru 3rd party individuals. They have to have a LLC or something as a recognized business you can check on. I remember when I was a young teenager I found an ad saying addressing envelopes from home to earn lots of money and I replied. I knew enough to not send money to a text. I had a couple more approaches and I think they were all on FB. But I still get a lot on Quora and, well mostly there.

The scammer says something like “oh keep $X for yourself” or “take what I owe you out of that” or “you’re part of my business now so I’ll pay you outta that”. There’s a lot of ways that money mules receive money without knowing it’s money laundering. But also many mules know or are at least suspicious, but they’re making pretty big chunks of money so they look the other way.

I once commented online on a video discussion modern urban infrastructure’s inability to deal with increasing traffic that I hate driving to Britain from the continent because you hit traffic in every country along the way and often, multiple rush hours. Some random person kept arguing in my comments section that you can’t drive to the UK. I was tempted to ask what century they were living in, since the Chunnel has existed for over 30 years at this point. They kept accusing me of being a scammer trying to pick up people. Incidentally, I still hate driving to the UK 😂.
