Join me in a discussion with actor Rib Hillis and producer Paul Epstein as we discuss the upcoming premiere of INSP’s The Tall Tales of Jim Bridger!
As a fur trapper, legendary mountain man Jim Bridger explored the entire distant West and survived countless hair-raising adventures. Now, he's a respected trail guide and army scout who knows every river, mountain, and trail of the frontier. As a new generation of settlers, soldiers, and speculators crowd the Bozeman Trail, Bridger's hard-won wisdom is more valuable than ever, even if his famous tall tales sound more like fiction than fact. But the West is still a perilous place, and with danger just around every bend, the greenhorns heading west quickly realize they need Bridger's guidance for much more than the trail.
Rib Hillis is an accomplished actor, host, producer, and model known for his work across primetime television, non-scripted reality television, and films spanning multiple genres. Hillis has worked on many notable titles, such as Ugly Betty, Two and a Half Men, and CSI, and has even showcased his talent as a designer on the Emmy-winning ABC show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. His most recent venture is INSP's The Tall Tales of Jim Bridger, in which he plays the titular legend, Jim Bridger himself.
Paul Epstein is an Emmy-nominated producer, writer, and director known for his work across scripted, factual, and news television. Epstein has worked with many major TV networks and streamers, including Peacock, Discovery, and MSNBC, and has amassed approximately 40 credits across his 20-year-long career. He has worked on titles such as the true-crime documentary series Who Killed Robert Wone? and the factual drama series Into the Wild Frontier, the most-watched TV series on INSP in 2021. Most recently, Paul directed The Tall Tales of Jim Bridger, a historical drama series due to premiere on INSP on January 11th, 2024. #wildwest #history #western

@WildWestExtravaganza I was watching a docu-series based on frontier pioneers, trappers, traders and mountain men... etc. There was an episode about a French translator and his native American wife. It was very obviously not Sacagawea or the Lewis and Clark Expedition though. Her husband was a drunk and she already had 2 young children when her husband was hired for an Expedition to the west. I believe it may have even been Ashley- but I'm not positive about that fact. She was also pregnant already when beginning the journey and birthed her child on her own, mid-journey, and quickly returning to the team again. Her baby did pass away unfortunately due to the mother's malnutrition during that part of the truck. Then her husband and the entire team were eventually ambushed and killed before they could finish the Expedition and she was left alone with no horse and 2 small children. They were eventually saved by native Americans after her absolute strength, bravery and will to save her children's lives. I remember being awed by her story but I cannot remember her name or find anything regarding her- for the life of me. I figure that you may be the person to ask if you may know what I am babbling on about...?? 😂😊

i would contend with the fact that the experienced mountain men did not do something similar to old/current Siberians during spring thaw when mosquitos go ham, fish tar. Boiling fish and sap into a tar and smear it on your skin and it would repel the mosquitoes possibly better than the poison we use. Maybe they didn't, but I find it hard to believe things like that that are just assumed to not having been a thing. In some cases the things they engineered before modern convenience with certain things is superior than synthetic materials. Furs, great example. You can't get a better set of winter coverings than a good ol grizzly pelt made into a coat, gloves etc. Mink, beaver, yada yada. Anyway I'm done with my conjecture of the "experts" who do jujitsu and "winter" in Montana. Wouldn't know the rich man's lifestyle, I do know my grandpa's fur coat from the 50s is warmer than anything I've managed to throw over my shoulders in 39 yrs in the Appalachias. Great interview, great work as usual. You'll make a great grandpa one day, "alright ya little ruffyens and scampers", gather round the fireplace for the happy little beaver story time." Of course I expect your name for family storytime getting more uncouth as the grandkids get older. The reverse of the YT algorithm.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure many of the fur trappers and the Native Americans had ways around that. I could be mistaken - I probably am mistaken - but I coulda sworn I read once that the fur trappers would use beaver castor as a bug repellent.

I've read that the Indians would rub rancid bear grease on their skin to repel mosquitos. Allegedly the odor also repelled small furry animals, other human beings....

In many ways think I’d have been better off if I had been born 200 years earlier at least 150 years earlier. A man rarely has the opportunity to see new things man hasn’t seen before today. The blank expanses of the map filled in the mystery lost. It would have been something to be among those who first saw the Rocky Mountains or acidic pools of Yellowstone to discover a lake of salt water today if you want to explore and see the undiscovered you have to be disconnected because the pressures or the vacuum will kill you. I almost envy those who could simply walk out the door with a bag on their hip and a rifle and just disappear into the vast expanse of the west
