Congrats on your move and good luck with your continued unpacking. It looks like today I'm gonna be that guy. Did I hear you say that the transistor was invented at GE? What would Bell Labs say about that?

🤦‍♀️ You are quite right. I said GE because it was a germanium transistor so that was in my head. Thanks for the correction.

I am a former Bell Labs employee. In 1997, shortly before the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the transistor effect, I called National Public Radio to remind them of the upcoming anniversary. They did a very nice piece on the discovery and impact of transistors, including interviews with Lab members who knew the workers who discovered the transistor effect. To put some perspective on Bell Labs, if it were a country, it would rank about 13th in the world in terms of the number of Nobel Prizes awarded to its employees. One of these prizes was awarded to Bardeen, Brattain, and Shockley for the discovery of the transistor effect. Be well & Best regards, Gottfried

Suggestion: The leveling wedges under your work bench now leave a small crack beneath the toe kick for small parts that drop to the floor to escape. A double win can be had by adding a new toe kick on top of the existing toe kick. A piece of anything 3/4" thick will work; a strip of plywood, or white pine shelving board would be perfect. The new toe kick will touch the floor and either aid or take the place of the wedges used to level the bench as well as fill that small gap and prevent hours of searching for small bits that might roll under that bench.
@pyromedichd1
@pyromedichd1 2 года назад
@@boots7859 A piece of foam would certainly keep parts from escaping but an additional kick plate would pick up the load from the wedges and could never be accidentally knocked out of place.

Some ideas: 1) I’d cover the walls, at least near coolant-using machines, with FRP. Water/oil resistant, and the pebbled texture helps with acoustics. 2) Run shop electric on wall surface, in pipe, about 48” off the floor. PVC pipe in s fine, just support it every yard or it will sag. Space it off the wall a bit so it won’t catch as much dust. Use solid boxes - none of those little holes - or crud will gunk up the insides. Why pipe? Because it will be easier to change things as time goes by. Anchor boxes into wall studs, as drywall will eventually crumble. 3) Hard rubber floor tiles are a very nice touch. No glue - they interlock.
@robertoswalt319
@robertoswalt319 2 года назад
I used cheap shower curtains, behind the machines, to protect the walls from cutting oil etc. they are easily replaceable plus I don't have to worry about swarf near electrical outlets.

Awesome place and placement! For your next moving, when setting hanging heavy machinery, it’s time for those hatchet ties not safe to lift them but you can stabilize them and concentrate on moving the hoist without risking hurting your feet or back as you had to do while maneuvering your mill. Hopefully it can help someone else some day.

If you (or anyone else) has to move a roller-cabinet or similar toolbox again here's a hint. A piece of cardboard on top of the tools in the drawer will stop them catching the above drawer when they shift about as the box is moved. For heavier tools, the cardboard can be secured with a few strips of gaffer tape.

Quinn, Nice work on the lighting, but, if I may, let me make a suggestion learned from setting up a woodshop's lighting (and modifying it). Install two independent circuits for lighting making sure to overlap coverage. There is very little in this world more terrifying than to be standing in a suddenly pitch black shop listening to other flesh rending spinny bits carry on because only the lighting breaker tripped.

Congratulations on the new shop. Always thought there was something about your accent that wasn't quite "American" but I couldn't place it. Gotta admit, what caught my eye was the ladder. I don't think I've seen one designed like that before, but it sure looks handy. I always worry about folding ladders because there's always that tiny worry they'll collapse when I'm on the thing! Still, as small as that baby folds up for storage, I just might have to look into getting one! Keep up the great work. Next time with the lights, try a price check on them like this, 8-foot, 4 bulb T-8 flourescent light fixtures with 4 T-8 direct wire LED replacement tubes, should be about $20 a light cheaper to install that way but you have to rewire the light from the start, mark the Line and Neutral ends of the sockets and put a sticker on the fixtures saying it is rewired and how. Get the dual ended bulbs, they are easier than the ones that have all the connections on one end.
