Robert Oliver and I were talking about building a cheap Wal-Mart survival kit one night and while he was visiting we decided to take trip and make it happen for under $20. The great thing about a kit like this is for it to used it in a training scenario so you can test your skills to critically think through the problem and do as much as you can with a little amount. We later used the contents of this kit during a Basic Survival Class we taught to a group of Navy Personnel. The challenge was a group activity to make a survival camp with only the supplies given.That video will be up on the E2E Member's Area soon.

If Wal-Mart is the only place you can go in an emergency to put together a survival kit, be sure to check out the crafts section (bundles of paracord, plastic-coated woven metal wire for beading, spools of nylon cording for crochet and assorted cotton and acrylic yarns) also check out the home decor section for votive candles, religious candles in those tall glass containers, oil lamps and plastic bottles of lamp oil).

That plastic sheet is only 0.03" thick and would probably rip just by hanging it over a tree. Just building a lean to out of sticks would be better. Also, a stainless steel whetstone knife with a 4" blade is only $5.03 and it has a paracord handle. Get a magnesium firestarter for around $2, a canteen for around $5, a space blanket for $2, and an mre for $3. '

I agree with you but using the plastic sheet could help waterproof the lean too

Thank you for taking the time to do this video. My son is learning survival and this video gave me the idea to test his knowledge. I will send him into Wal Mart to do this exact scenario. It will give me a good idea on how much he has learned & only cost me $20.00. Good job guys.

I used to have top ramen in my bug out bag/survival kit, but then this past February (a week before my birthday of all times) the doctors diagnosed me with Celiac/Gluten allergy, so I had to cut all the gluten stuff out of my bag, biut they do have gluten free noodles, as well as gluten free pasta that I have been able to get for my survival bag.

I guess a lot of the people commenting don't get it. Think outside the box! Sure, a $6 folding knife or $8 multi-tool is possible, but think about a kitchen knife. I used an old, high-carbon kitchen knife that was my Grandparents as a camp knife for years. The plastic tarp may not be the best shelter but it can be used to water-proof a lean-to or to make a solar still. Plus, it's 200 square feet and fits in a large pocket.

right.. i logged in just to comment here.. to all the people bashing walmart i must say you obviously dont know jack. while it is true that some of their items happen to be lower quality than other stores that doesnt mean that it is BAD quality. in fact 3 of the best pocket knives ive ever owned have come from walmart one of which being a kershaw which is made from slightly different steel without the spring assist as the same model with spring assist. also have an ozark trail folder that i have used for years and absolutely love. that being said this video is meant to help you purchase wisely and have SOMETHING which anyone with a brain would know is better than NOTHING.. so stop being a bunch of tools and take it for what it is.. to E2E thank you for a great video maybe not the items i personally would have picked up at wally world but certainly adequate

I Like Ozark Trail knives. They're really a Great Value for the money!! For what they cost...$4 or so...what the Hell?? Yes, made in China and with Mystery Steel blades, but I have Several types of them each of a Different Color, body style and blade configuration. And All of them have served me Very Well!! I suspect that Ozark Trail knives may be Collector's Items in the future, which is why I shop for them Every Christmas season when they're located on the endcaps in the Sporting Goods section...
@MrDravous
@MrDravous 11 лет назад
another possibility for knife/fire starter is a standard metal file. you can cut about 2.5" off the end and it can act as a steel for striking (real)flint/chert rocks, and the rest can be given a temper in a kitchen oven effectively making it knife steel that you could grind an edge into. a decent amount of work but saves money and you'd get reliable quality.

Have used Chicago Cutlery for years. From cable splicing to Rattle snake skinnin'. Lightweight, durable, and relatively inexpensive knives of various sizes that can be altered in length with a few hacksaw blades. Full tang with hickory maybe oak handles. Not for prying or batoning but are extremely useful.

Every time me & my son head out in the bush and get our fire started I sing "Nothing starts a fire like a bic". BTW, I have that very same $3 SS bottle and I use it quite often. I know you can't be singles for the experiment but I keep a couple lawn & leaf bags in my pack for emergency shelter. Still though, my favorite survival thing at wallyworld is those Freeze dried meals in the camping section. They're quick, easy, light and taste really good.

I'm not sure about just getting stuff in one store but I agree with the basic premise, you don't always have to buy top dollar to get something that does the job. My Stainless steel water bottle cost about the same and it's been going strong for three years, I got my anodised aluminium billy pot from Wally World with a frying pan for £5 ($8) and its great except the handles but they can be replaced with metal coat hangars when needs be. If you use your common sense you can spend less money on some gear where you can get away with it then use that money in areas where you are better off spending it like backpacks/rucksacks, water proofs, boots and a good knife (that doesn't always mean expensive). Thanks for the vid!!

If its a true stainless bottle that doesn't have the vacuum seal liner, you can boil water to sterilize it, you can't do that in a synthetic bottle.

Most of that stuff can be got at a thrift store a lot cheaper or a yard sale.I even got some stuff at our local county trash site in the steel ben, I got a tail gate grill, pressure pot(without lid), dog bowl not used.Try some of those places first.

@BookGolem
@BookGolem 13 лет назад
How well did your $3 water bottle hold up when heated. I bought one of them to try out, and then bought what was left of them when I found them again. Fortunately they were only $2 at my local wally world. I think I got 3 or 4 silver and some blues, greens, and reds that I gave to the rest of my family. And 1 $1 aluminum one. We also each got a $5 one with a flip top that is easier to drink from. We also found some insulated sleeves that fit them in the camping section.

Not only that, but when I've had a cheap/thin tarp like that in the pack for a month or two, it stuck to itself, and ripped to shreds when I tried to unfold it.
@pr2wayne76
@pr2wayne76 13 лет назад
Now we must have videos of the items being put to the test. How well does 1 mil plastic work for a tarp? Will the knife hold up to battoning, will it make a spark? How well will the bottle hold up to several boilings? I cant wait.
