@@HealingVoice39 because Uni is about a mysterious secret battle happening in the dead of night. It’s lowkey, and the UI reflects that. It’s like this in the original as well. That game’s UI, the poetic text subtitles below every option, the announcer sounding like a bored secretary recording the match out of a sense of professionalism, uni had this classy vibe that other FGs didn’t. Quick edit: I do like this select screen, I still think it FITS the vibe. But it’s far too grey and dull. Needs more color contrasts and needs a few more stylized elements. Perhaps find space for the character’s story texts like in the original? The text here appears under the portraits, so you can’t read them (they’re the same as the original’s, but that may change since this is the night directly after the original…)
the electric guitar just pops off, raito is absurd also so so so happy the characters pretty much get to keep all their tools and combos rather than simplifying, they went ham and gave everyone new moves on top of keeping their old ones truly the rollback patch we've been waiting for
That's the only thing I find a downgrade. Some portraits really look like the proportions are off. And not like in an anime-kinda way. The rest of them look nice tho.
If you think that Central Fiction is a downgrade, I don't know what to say. Yuuki Katou is an amazing illustrator that also worked on the Dark War light novels and worked on his own vn. I don't wat to say that Mori is bad as an artist since it's not true but you should check again the differnce between Calamity Trigger and Chrono Phantasma both done by Mori vs Continuum Shift and Central Fiction which are done by Katou. @@valentds
@@jekmx3441 Personally VASTLY prefer Mori's art style over Katos, since some of the characters proportions in Katou's art don't match what is describe in the games story and shown in the story sprite art. And this criticism I have goes for both male and females. Some examples off the top of my head include Katou's Litchi's CF artwork ( particularly in the face) which gives her a more rounded face with the eyes, which gives off a more cutesy/ moe look instead of the the more mature sexy face. For comparison, Mori's Litchi CP artowrk has a more mature and sexy look the character is known for ( a correction of Litchis CT work which admittingly had some issues, but regardless is WAY closer to what's been described in the story). Another example is Makoto CS and CF portraits by Katou have a WAY smaller boob size compared to her story mode sprite. (While Moris Makoto CP style looks more consistent). These examples also apply to the males too. For instance, Katou's work on the Ragna's CS portait has him having an iron chin that would make Batman from TAS proud. Katou's work on Azrael is off too since his torso is MUCH smaller on the body too compared to Moris CP artwork on Azrael with the torso matching the hulking build he is. Now that's not to say that Mori had his misteps as well, since CT litchi is an excellent example of this, but I feel like Katou screws this up WAY more times than Mori himself. In the end though. What someone is going to find apealling is going to VARY from person to person. So there isn't a right or wrong here.
I actually quite like this character select screen. The music and the UI are good, but I'm just not that into the new art for these characters. I feel like it isn't working with the style of the older sprites. For instance, the size of the eyes is different, and the color palette isn't as bold compared to the sprites. Not to say the artwork is bad, far from it, I'm just saying it's a little off-putting at first glance.
Yeah I prefer the old artstyle. It popped out more. The new one, while an improvement from the new artwork we saw in CLR, just isn't gonna top the old artowork imo.
@@markandrew287 I think the old one feels more at home/iconic for me but dunno, I vibe with the new one. Funny enough, I see more people complaining about the character select screen itself (?) but I like that too LOL although I understand the old one was a banger. But who knows, may be tweaks, maybe Kuon puts them all in some white castle in the story to justify it, hell if I know. I think I'd give Hyde a different pose but other than that, got no complaints. I'm excited! This, Melty, and GG are easily my favorite fighters!
I've heard from somewhere that Carmine was supposed to be SHIKI's moveset back in Melty, but apparently since no one wanted a cool hot white haired man knocking you down and getting setplay with 500 swords everywhere, they scrapped him and used the idea for mr Carmine.
The theme is ok (comparing it to the last one isn’t fair) but I don’t like the trend of minimalist UIs. The stylized edgy jagged CSS in UNICLR fit more. Very excited for this game still
As someone who has never played a UNI game but am planning to get this one on release, I can't really speak for my experience with the old character select. As far as this screen goes by itself, the color distribution is great before the characters are actually selected. I like the glow behind the characters that changes color depending on the character, and the portraits are big enough to make up for the comparatively (and in this situation, to its benefit) bland grey middle portion. It highlights the characters, which is good! When they're actually selected, though, it feels like the characters are less emphasized, which makes no sense considering they're the ones that you've confirmed to be used in battle. The portraits are hidden behind the grey side panels, and it doesn't even feel like a bad graphic design choice so much as it does just a layering error. There's so much empty space in these side panels, and moving the portraits in front would make it miles better. For the other elements, it kind of reminds me of a rhythm game, although I can't really say if it's in a good or bad way. Still excited for this game though, hope they improve it a bit more before release :P
Raito once again makes a great theme. i don't like the new select grid though... feels too much like an unfinished fan made MUGEN screenpack with terrible color design. At least it being so compact could fit more characters at least without too much redesign.
Hmm,I wonder if the roster is barely changed for the sake of it being too early for many new fighters to be seen yet or if they've just updated the cast for a new generation of gaming Really do hope for some reveals on this game eventually
Of course the old one is so iconic no matter what they do ppl would say that. I actually really like this one. And if u say portaits are downgraded thats just copium
@@ramkindalethal732 personally i wouldn't have an issue if the screen didn't have so many greys, then it'd be passable, while the in game UI feels simplified to the point of it feeling like a placeholder. i find it hard to disagree with OP on this, they took away the iconic style of UNI instead of building upon it. the character arts i do agree are solid, minus merkava who looks like a fucked up pokemon
