Continuing our quest to be more self sufficient in our off grid life, work on the hen shed was put under pressure due to the imminent arrival of much needed heavy rain.

Hallelujah re heavy rains... 💦 finally ☔️ I live in Nice, Fr, and get the orange Sahara rains. Tilly is as big as a Great Dane. The coop is going to be palatial, ventilation key for the birds.

Hope Tilly and the Border Collie had a good time on their play date! Looks like they had plenty of room to romp about. Glad you got rain and also that you saved most of your plums. When you started talking about hail, I was wondering how your plants would survive. Good decision to pull them early! Nesting boxes are looking good!

Thanks. Tilly tired the other, out yet again lol - She has a lot of energy for what is supposed to be a big lazy dog! The rain was very welcome and we could do with a bit more - fortunately, we didn't get the hail.

The chicken House is looking good. Great progress. So glad you have had some rain and that it is soaking into the land. I wondered if it would have just run off after such a long drought.

We had a very small amount of rain here 60kms south of Seville sadly as it is very very much needed... also had the sandy covering over everything. You're doing a wonderful job, as usual, on the chicken coop ❤

yeah rain! in the chicken coop you can leave the holes and cracks because they need ventilation.

Told you a couple of days ago you were getting heavy rains AND I said, you should prepare the open bare land so that you don't lose your topsoil ( if you have any left) - I suggested covering with straw or cardboard paper. I'd like to suggest again the permaculture design elements to prevent water run-off, such as swales. Your soil will not retain the water because molecularly it will not be able to bond. It is better to start with small patches spread all over the place. If you don't do this, you will perpetuate the drought even though it may have rained. You won't see the benefit because all the water will run off and just erode your land and none of it will soak in because the soil structure has nothing to help it hydrate the soil molecules.

I agree that it is necessary to slow down water runoff. The land looks too sandy to hold much water during torrential rains.

@@LCamp-cr7fs looking at the pools of water, I see that the ruts and channels in the dirt are acting like swales but how well does the soil maintain the hydration and what is the condition of the soil? Soil is not just soil and not all soils are equal as far as nutrients contained, which eventually becomes food or climate influencing through the propagation and support of vegetation.

Maybe you should create a video on how to optimise the land by using your own farm land in a semi arid area as an example, with before and after views to show what you personally have accomplished. It is easy to sit back and watch what others have done and critique.

Swales and berms have been shown all over the world to make a significant difference to the water level. It is worth looking at RU-vid videos about how they have worked for guidance. I have been watching the channel for years and cheering you in your efforts. All the best.

I don't think you mentioned it, but will you have some ventilation for the chicken coop? Will you be putting something along the bottom of the fence to keep predators from digging under it? The rain was certainly a blessing. Tilly, did I spell it right?, is such a sweetheart. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of chicken's you'll be getting.

They, the chicken coop is turning out nice, looking forward to meeting the new chickens soon. Btw on the coop build, I've never heard you mention ventilation. I am sure you know great ventilation in their shelters, summer and winter, to keep the flock healthy disease free.

And for centuries they've been doing it wrong or badly. I challenge you to prove my suggestions wrong by taking into consideration the methods adopted by the Australian, Bill Morrison or the documentary "Regreening the desert" on RU-vid. Sitting back and just shrugging your shoulders in resignation won't bring a change and the methods the Spanish have been following over time have been to their detriment.
