Episode Notes:
1. Captured on real hardware.
2. Opening song from Cyberbots. Closing song from Sexy Parodius.
3. Some of these games are quite affordable even now.
4. I had some sound issues playing Pandemonium via the Satiator. I'm finding more and more games that have issues with this device.
5. Three Dirty Dwarves is so much better in multiplayer. I mean orders of magnitude better. I highly recommend you play it with a friend.
6. Elan Doree has some fantastic art. It was a major pain to capture footage for, however. It switches resolutions constantly, causing my Framemeister to drop it every few minutes.
7. Solar Eclipse has the dude from Road House in it. The guy caught banging the bar wench in the closet. One of the chicks from Babylon 5 is in it as well.
8. Casper has a fair bit of voice acting in it, though it's not by the original movie stars.
9. Cyberbots has a Mech Gouki character. Hence the thumbnail.

I love how he sounds so fair and you can tell just through his voice how much he loves his Sega stuff. And when he talks about stuff he doesn’t approve of, that’s when his disappointment can truly come out. He’s not out to try too hard to be funny. Just a guy with an enjoyment of Sega’s legacy with informative videos and makes you feel like you’re there with him talking Sega with him 😆

Deep fear also had 3D analog movement via that 3D control pad. Something that Resident Evil never did until the Resident Evil remake. Although be warned the Retro Fighters Saturn Gamepad with the analog stick does not work that way since the stick just emulates the d-pad. It's also the only game that I know of that does not prompt to save when changing discs. But with a fenrir ode you simply power off power back on quickly choose the second disc and it works fine
@Edexote

Deep Fear does ask to save in order to switch discs. Would be impossible to finish otherwise, because as soon as you open the disc door you get sent to the main menu.

Resident Evil 2 would copy this idea for its N64 release, so not so late, but the original idea was Sega's. Anyway, I feel like the tank controls are appropriate for survival horror games, it adds to the tension.

I don't regret buying a Playstation instead of a Nintendo 64 or Saturn, but now I'm going back and discovering all that the Saturn had to offer. Just picked up Magical Hoppers recently at a convention. I was surprised at the new anime cutscenes in place of the CG ones and entirely different characters from the PS version I played back in the 90s.

@retrogamingknight
@retrogamingknight 2 года назад
@@relli3035 Yes, it's very English friendly. It's the Japanese version of Pandemonium, a 2.5D action platformer, that features different characters from the U.S. version and replaced the CG cutscenes with anime cutscenes. All the menus and text is in English, the only thing that is in Japanese is the voice overs on the opening and ending cutscenes.

Among the general public the console itself is underappreciated but further within that scope I'd say Legend of Oasis, Rayforce/Layer Section, Darius Gaiden, Shining the Holyark, and Mystaria/Blazing Heroes off the top of my head.
@RetrOrigin
@RetrOrigin 2 года назад
Part of the reason why the Saturn gets overlooked is because some of their fans seem to be their best to scare people away. Many like to act extremely elitist and only care about expensive stuff and frown upon people who burn games or use ODEs while others can't stop shitting on other consoles like the PS1 and N64 for no reason, which is not exactly the best way to get people to appreciate the Saturn. Those games you mentioned are definitely some of the games a enjoyed the most on the Saturn BTW.
@shiningphantasy1393
@shiningphantasy1393 2 года назад
@@RetrOrigin Honestly that kind of bickering and infighting has happened with every generation originating from the 16-bit era and through the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox generation. I guess I couldn't speak for any later consoles since I only had a PSP and PS Vita (both because of Ys releases primarily) before moving onto a PC with Steam since that time. The Saturn failed to gain any traction at the time of release (In part due to Sega's own strategies and management) and was barely noticed by anyone other than enthusiast type gamers, thus the increased expense of trying to purchase hard-to-find games now which only had limited and short-lived distribution even back then. Not a good financial investment in my mind.

Always got time for this style of video. I think there is actually a ton of interesting stuff on the Saturn that's gone unexplored, it's just that a lot of it is locked behind a language barrier in Japanese. Terra Phantastica, which had Phantasy Star staff working on it, is more impressive looking than Final Fantasy Tactics was. I've never, ever heard it mentioned in the West. The Japanese Saturn's rpg library goes DEEP. There's also a mountain of colourful puzzlers on the system with a ton of personality (a lot of match 3 clones too). Even the sketchy looking bikini girl jigsaw puzzle games are a pretty chill time. There might be enough puzzlers to rival the system's fighter & shmup libraries. Then there are just weird oddities like Hyper Golf, and the epically named "Big Thanks - Super Keirin - Dream With Keirin 50 Years" (which is the only cycle racing videogame I've ever seen).

Oh wow, those transparency effects on Casper look great. Especially for the Saturn, since getting it to work on VDP1 was a real pain. I heard you had to mark each individual pixel for transparency to do it right, otherwise you'd either get transparency that would erase everything else behind it on VPD1 or just use the mesh effect (which is what most devs would end up doing).

I'd like to give a shout out to the game 'Mr. Bones'. Developed and published by Sega and remains a Saturn exclusive. Just like you said with Casper, back in the day I played the game for 60 seconds and shut it off. Decades later I came back to it, and found it to be a very unique game. It almost feels like an amped up Sega CD game. Some levels have FMV backgrounds (like Sewer Shark or Silpheed). Every level plays completely different and the cutscenes are top quality. Great voice acting and music. The only thing that is working against the game is the frustrating difficulty. Even the first level makes you want to shut off the game in rage. Best to grab the manual to see what the goal of each stage is or get a guide for pointers. But if you stick with it, the game really pays off with a VERY entertaining story.

Trust me, I have never slept on Parodius, have them all, including the MSX version for my Saturn, all the SNES/SFC ones, the Game Boy one, the PSP collection, and most of them for my PS1. EGM magazine back in the day introduced me to the seriews via their Import Games section, so have known about the for decades. I swore in those days I'd play and one day own the entire series, and have had them for several years now.

Nice, this is a rare retro vid with something I hadn't seen before. But one thing I think is underappreciated (at least on Saturn) is X-Men vs SF and Marvel Superheroes v SF with 4MB cart. Rarely meet people in North America who knew it was a thing and didn't have loading yet still tag team etc!

I love the hand drawn aesthetic of Three Angry Dwarves. It actually reminds me of Ralph Bakshi. Assuming anybody here is old like me and knows who that is... Animator who made Fritz The Cat, Wizards, Cool World, Fire and Ice.

It's a shame they didn't make a Sonic CD 2 that pushed the 2D capabilities of the Saturn, a Saturn 2D Streets of Rage should have happen also.
