This is a story all about the challenges and struggles that the Southern New Zealand Dotterel, one of our most endangered birds that's on the brink of extinction in Aotearoa, face to survive on Rakiura. It also shines a spotlight on our passionate rangers who dedicate themselves to the cause, and live among the birds year-round and help protect them.
'Underbirds' was filmed as a part of the Directors’ Science Communication degree at the University of Otago by students Abi Liddell, Brady Clarke, and Isabella Lewis. They travelled to Rakiura and spent a week at the dotterel ranger's hut then returned to Dunedin to edit and put together this visually captivating and compelling story.
