I honestly love my Criterion Collection and subscribe to the streaming service. I feel like I can pick anything from the Collection and at the minimum it is worth watching if not fantastic!

Dave, thanks for turning me onto some of these film recommendations which I have never heard of in the Criterion collection. Always great to find new discoveries in the collection!
I've been contemplating buying 24 Frames, and will definitively do it now. I remember loving Heart of a Dog when I saw it at a film festival in 2016, and also Safe is a terrific movie I've seen several times. Thank you for reminding me of these films!
I really like the Criterion release of Local Hero. Not sure if it is underrated, but it is probably my favorite Criterion individual movie release ever. Some of the lesser known Michael Powell films which have not been upgraded from DVD by Criterion are also very good. I would point to 49th Parallel especially, that one is a masterpiece and a truly great movie, but also The Small Back Room and I Know Where I'm Going deserve a blu-ray release from Criterion. Honestly I hope that Michael Powell gets a box set from Criterion like the Fellini or Ingmar Bergman box sets. It's long overdue.
Great shares, Dave! I have only heard of Dinner with Andre. A couple of Criterions I seldom see discussed are also DVD only: Fritz Lang’s The Testament of Dr. Mabuse and Kurosawa’s Stray Dog.

I really enjoyed Fishing With John, a recommendation from you. Safe is a fantastic film that deserves so much more attention. Heart Of A Dog really helped me when my Autumn passed. The first time I saw John Lurie was in Jarmusch's Down By Law; a personal favourite film. Fishing With John is wonderful stuff! Vanya on 42nd Street was my first ever Criterion Blu-ray and I love it. The intro of everyone wandering in to the rehearsal and how you're unaware that the play has actually started; wonderful stuff! I don't know the Todd Haynes film so that goes on the wish-list! Kiarostami; genius films. Surely your intro and outro video-shots are inspired by 24 Frames?! At least I think that every time I see it.. Good choices, Sir!

Glad you enjoyed Vanya on 42nd Street - I also love how they blurred the lines between real life and when/how the play started. Kiarostami is one of my very favorite filmmakers and definitely inspires the intro/outro for my videos.
André Gregory & Wallace Shawn: 3 Films I picked up last year on your recommendation and I absolutely love it! Thank you for that. I mentioned you in the videos I did discussing Vanya on 42nd Street and Drive My Car, as they both deal with Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. You've mentioned liking quieter films during this time of year, so I would highly recommend Drive My Car if you haven't seen it yet. Some underrated films in the Criterion Collection are: I Know Where I’m Going (Michael Powell), Il posto (Ermanno Olmi) and The Baker’s Wife (Marcel Pagnol). Whisky Galore/Tight Little Island by Alexander Mackendrick is underrated as well but I don’t think it’s in the collection.
Yes, completely makes sense. I typically only pickup Criterion films during the sales so can add a few more each year to my collection. So many good films to watch.
Great list, Dave! For my 5 underrated Criterion films (that are still available) would include Man Bites Dog, The Life Aquatic, The Ice Storm, Make Way for Tomorrow, and either Miller's Crossing or Topsy Turvy. Follow up question for you: what filmmaker did you discover through the Criterion Collection that you've enjoyed the most? For me I would go with Mike Leigh. The first film of his I watched was Naked and I've been hooked on his work ever since (Another Year is my favorite). Hope all is well! Love the Criterion content!

Mike Leigh is a genius and I think that Naked was the first film I watched in his filmography also. Some of the best filmmakers that I've discovered through the Criterion Collection (difficult to pick just one) are: Kiarostami, Tarkovsky, Ozu, Kieślowski, Bergman, Reichardt, so many.
Good choice got the Andre Gregory films but as separate blurays, Safe is excellent, I would nominate Gomorrah directed by Mattel Gerrone no one mentions it and Babettes Feast from Gabriel Axel and finally More recent Bing Lius Minding the Gap and Tiny the life of Erin Blackwell.
