It’s why I keep my 997.1 regularly serviced, 2.5 k miles most years but that oil change gets done regardless. Always let the oil hit 90 before having fun, there a reason why Porsche put the 90 in big bold numbers on the oil temp gauge! Preventative measures are always better than the cure when it comes to mechanical issues like bushes, track rods and suspension parts. Great videos.
@BarryCoombs1
@BarryCoombs1 Год назад
Yep, I do the same. Keep the revs around 2-2.5k until the oil temperature hits 90 then start enjoying the engine. Oil change every year too even though it’s only getting occasional use.

With the 997 GT3’s starting to fetch big money now surely the 997.2 and.1 turbo’s will follow. The performance figures are astounding even by todays fast modern sports cars.

I had a 996 turbo stick and now the 997.1 turbo with Tiptronic. The turbos are incredible and the 997 are even more so.

Very interesting. I had a 981 Cayman S with PDK box and sports exhaust. Absolutely loved it. Wouldn’t have minded a few extra horses though. Quite a playful car, but as we all know, to many people, when you say Porsche, they think 911. Who’s to complain, but it does show that quite a few flat-6 potted Porsches will end up under the radar.

Spot on with the 987’s! If it weren’t for my wife falling for them, I’d have continued to overlook them. Now, I can’t stop taking her ‘05 Boxster S everywhere.

This. Buyers (righty) decide that certain models have reached a value that they don't agree with so look at the stuff that's been maligned eg the 997.1S because of the engine issues.

I always enjoy seeing these. The thing about the gt3 is that the market appears not to classify the 996 .1/.2 and the 997.1 as significantly different (albeit not the same) cars in terms of owner perpectives, although most owners seem to say the 7.1 is a more appropriate solution for general road use. I wonder therefore if this means those 3 generations are in a way seen as one amorphous mass by enthusiasts, separated only by personal preference rather than being significantly different cars which might well explain why the prices are currently similar and hopefully prevent any one of them standing head and shoulders above the others. As soon as I own a gt3, i will of course have an entirely different perspective eulogising about the status of whichever one i end up with 😂

Great to hear their thoughts. It surprises me no one mentions' the 987 Spyder - it's a real special light weight future classic. Completely agree there are bargains to be had in the 997 generation. Not that I would swap the 996 for one mind you :)

981S owner here. Had one till a clown ran a light, center punched car passenger side. Took me a year & a half to find a replacement . Replacement car has Sport Design steering wheel, X73 sport suspension, 20” carrera wheels, sport exhaust, chrono. Tremendous car to hoon in.

The R is terrific, but the .2 S gives you nearly everything of the R except the "limited edition-ness", and for half the price. If that isn't the definition of overlooked and undervalued, I don't know what is.

I agree that the 997.1 doesn’t get the praise it deserves which leads me onto the 987.1 Cayman S. The 08 version of the Cayman S is overlooked because of the earlier years issues, but this is the best example you can get form the 987.1 gen. A 2008 low mileage (55k) Cayman S needs to be shown and discussed more. The price went up last year and it’s currently steady, but I expect prices will rise even further.

Jason at Paragon has really spoilt my day. 😩😄 Given that I sold my Guards Red 996 GT3 CS for £42k back in the day. 1 of 28 U.K. Clubsports. Paragon actually sold it recently too. I’m in a mk2 now though so all is not lost. 😎

Have to admit, I watched this to see if my car was mentioned (cayman R) as I think it is still slightly underrated I’ll be honest I bought mine 4 years back as my first Porsche not knowing much about Porsche at all, as I’ve always been a bmw fan boy (I’ve never really loved the 911 styling except for the GT Cars) I test drove it against an m2 both were 40k and had to have it I suddenly realised why people bought a car which design seemed to dated- they way the drive 😂 My issue now is, any meaningful step up is a hell of a lot of money, mk1 997 gt3 Potentially a gt4 ? It doesn’t sit well with petrol heads to have cars so long and this is the longest I’ve owned a car, but I can’t justify the money needed for an upgrade currently. Good to see I’m not deluded in my thinking 😂

My candidate is 991.1 Carrera S with a manual seems a bit undervalued at the moment. I know steering is not a high point but as an entry Porsche with no previous ownership you just do not care, because only in direct comparison it is worse steering feel compared to hydraulic or later gens 991.2 or 992. Great Touring Porsche with quite a punch and a final non GT car with a naturaly aspirated engine.
@marky9117
@marky9117 Год назад
Great cars but they made loads of them and currently they’re sliding into no man’s land where they’re too old for the guys who like new cars and too new for the guys who like analogue stuff. There’ll always be buyers but they aren’t undervalued.

Just the video I was looking for. Thank you very much! When I think about underrated Porsches, I like to think of models that people never have been especially fond of and in the best case are almost forgotten by now, because that keeps the prices low and no Porsche has ever been forgotten for good! There's always a point in time, when people discover these are great cars as well and that's when prices start to surge ... so without having done a lot of research ... 996 Targa maybe?

I drove a 1987 3.2 Carrera Targa for about 8 years every day 40 miles to work and back. Of course it was "Guards Red" which I grew to despise. It was the newest 911 I ever owned among a dozen or more. Was the heaviest I ever owned except for a 1982 930 Turbo, and it had the electric windows and such but it did have lots of torque. Was a good car, didn't really like the G50 transaxle especially on cold winter mornings, give me a 915 any time, and LIKE ALL 911's and 912's I ever owned the heat was shit - Porsche NEVER figured that out with the air cooled motors. On the later 911's the a/c was shit too, Germans then had no idea how hot it got in the USA, I lived in Germany, their homes don't have a/c! Now I have a 1998 986 Boxster, it is quicker/FASTER without doubt than the 3.2, more nimble and the a/c will freeze your balls and the heat will boil them. Lots of progress in those 10 years. Do I miss the "back seat" of a 911? Perhaps. What I REALLY miss the air cooled motor, to me a Porsche that is water cooled is not a real Porsche.

Narrow body 993 c2. Lighter, smaller than the c2s and same power. Right spec and you can have one for £65k/80k on the clock and all the work would’ve been done re: upgrade suspension/radio etc and the c2s, double if not more… does not make sense to me. Anyone else think so, or am I being nuts? Plus, running cost is nothing when compared to almost every car mentioned here, except maybe the boxster.

Great video Lee and interesting they all said a boxster and 987 particularly I have to agree not just because I have one for sale but because I'm asking £9870 which seems to low and yet it's not there all loads cheaper and I think as Phil mentioned the quality of the car with extended leather dashboard like mine it just feels like a quality luxury sports car that should be twice the price for the fun and performance they give out plus the exhaust note 🎵 on even just the 2.7 is outstanding as standard...really great cars totally underated undervalued and I would go as far as saying " MIS UNDERSTOOD" 🤔

No Porsche sports cars fly under the radar anymore. Even old 914s are inflating in price. If you want a sub-$20k Porsche, go for an early Panamera or non-Turbo 1st-gen Cayenne. A few 986 and 987 non-S models as well but decent models that have less than 100k miles have crept back up over $20k.
