Comment your favorite and least favorite song from the album!

The part where you finally understood what johnny johnny johnny was about. Its certainly not the type of song you'd expect to tackle such a confronting topic.

Shoot to kill, kill your darlings is probably my favourite song on the album. Not understanding the obsession some people have with wanting to go to war and kill is something i also share, especially when someone is well off and has all the opportunities to do whatever they want and have a good upbringing why are you so excited and willing to throw yourself into the line of fire.

This is definitely a song that went over my head on first listen because I was so shocked by the sounds. It was hard to catch concepts and lyrics of everything first listen💯

Johnny johnny johnny is the kind of song that relentlessly drives you to groove and dance while making you feel HORRIBLE about doing so. Such an important and brilliant song. Even down to the Johnny Whoops chant being a children's game. Just, ugh. Don't have a least favorite, this album is that good, but my favorite has gotta be Geeze Louise

April seriously has the mind of a mastermind because holy shit, JJJ is such an insanely catchy and groovy song that is just so visceral and disturbing and disgusting I have lots of thoughts about it, but I can say I feel she did that to make it clear how this type of shit is commonly glossed over by society, pushed under the rug so to speak "but we don't have to talk about it"
@daammobandito7961

@@starchild199x oh it's undoubtedly on purpose, it's like Hey Ya in that sense. So catchy it makes you confront the juxtaposition of the instrumental and lyrics, and how they make you feel.

16:20 The lines spoken throughout the song are sampled from Dance Dance Revolution 4thMIX’s results announcer, specifically when failing a stage.

I recently discovered the album is also a massive concept album. It's a story that takes place in a town called wallsocket. There are fictional websites that entail events from songs in real time. It's absolutely mind blowing how much thought and care went into the creation of this album.

there are so many great moments on Wallsocket that it's hard to pick just one! Cops and robbers, Locals, and Old money bitch are all fun as hell pop-rock tracks. Geez louise suddnely switching into a square dance song is wild in the best way. Uncanny long arms is beautiful and SO cathartic. everything else brings a sense of darkness and/or sarcasm that Wallsocket just would not be the same without, and every single song on the album feels necessary for the worldbuilding going on within. but if i HAD to pick just one moment that's my favorite, i would probably have to say Shoot to kill, kill your darlings/Horror movie soundtrack. the intro on Shoot to kill just does something for my brain, and then the beat fades in and it GROOVES SO HARD. the melodies and chord movements are SO catchy too, plus i share the sentiment of not understanding the "war prudes". it hits especially close to home for me because i was friends with one of them for a few years in school. i always thought it was weird how obsessed he was with wars and weapons, but let it be because it takes all kinds... until he treated my body in way that was unacceptable to me. all else i'll say about it is that i have not talked to him since. anyway, Shoot to kill ends with the repeated and increasingly glitchy "i just don't want you to die" which is somehow simultaneously cathartic and anti-cathartic. and as a six impala fan, i LOVE that sort of stuff! then it blends SEAMLESSLY into Hms, which is one of the most angry, brooding, and dare i say deranged songs i've ever heard. the narrator is OUT. FOR. BLOOD. i can smell the blood and sweat and gun smoke just from listening to the song, it's titled so perfectly and the atmosphere does NOT disappoint. i feel both songs in my whole body; the first part of Stk,kyd just makes me MOVE, and the drop of Stk,kyd and Hms make me feel those feelings as if they were my own. underscores has been a favorite artist of mine for a few years now, and i cannot express how happy it makes me that she managed to avoid sophomore slump so well. criminally underrated artist, and i'm very very glad that more people are not only discovering her music, but enjoying it as well! (hi Daisy!)

my favorite is "you don't even know who i am", saw underscores live in D.C. and her performance of the song was absolutely stunning there. for the studio version I guess my favorite is "geez louise" as it has so many different things to enjoy! least fav is "horror movie soundtrack", doesn't have a ton that keeps me bringing back but i don't dislike it. just the sorta song i would only listen to while doing a full album listen through ^^ hi daisy :D

This album is so fucking good. Combines every genre I absolutely love (not so much rap/hip hop, but yknow a tinge). The noise, hyperpop, punk, rock, COUNTRY, fucking everything all melded together. It was so fucking good. I’ve been searching for an album like this that just blends everything just right it’s so good. Also the aesthetics r insane. The aesthetics really just fit so much of what I enjoy. Love love love this underscores album and even tho I was already a fan from past music I’m a massive fan now Also hi daisy!

This album is for sure my album of the year and while writing this I have listened to the album over 200 times (trying to get it into my spotify wrapped) If I had to pick a favorite song it would have to be between Locals and You don't even know who I am, but Horror movie soundtrack is starting to win me over. My least favorite is probably Seventyseven dog years just because of how lore-heavy the song is and if you don't get the concept of the album the lyrics don't make as much sense. But overall this is one of my favorite albums ever so thank you for spreading the word and reacting to this album!

Imo my fav has gotta be Geez louise. For starters, I’m a HUGE fan of longer songs in albums where most of the songs are pretty short (and just long songs in general), so I took an interest even before listening. Secondly, I’m a huge fan of the production quality on this one. While it’s not the absolute best of the album (Shoot to kill, kill your darlings imo takes the cake for that), it’s really something to just marvel at especially when listening to the instrumental. And finally, I just love how many turns and switches it takes throughout the song, because it keeps it much more interesting than just 7 minutes of the aggressive electro-punk stuff of whatever it was at the beginning, so bonus points for making it worth listening the full way through. I adore the fact that underscores is able to not only conceive of making something like this (she did enter production on the song knowing what it was gonna be like), but also make it work and flow so well together despite it seeming like 3 different songs in one. One of my favorite songs probably ever. In terms of my LEAST favorite, I’d say either You don’t even know who I am or Seventyseven dog years, because as you said at some point in the video (I forgot lmao), some of the songs could definitely be cut short a bit. While it’s hard to pick least favorites because each of the songs has something special and unique to each of them, those two are the ones that stick out to me the most, if at all. Overall, one of my top 3 albums of 2023, would recommend.

So You don’t Even Know Who I Am can be interpreted as a trans allegory, it can be read like their trans self talking to themselves before realizing they are trans. At least that’s how I read it.

She talked about this in a Reddit AMA a couple months ago. That wasn't actually the intention when she wrote the song, but she likes hearing about alternative readings of her music and encourages it 😁. IIRC the only ones that are intentionally about trans issues are JohnnyX3 and Geez Louise

I know you mentioned youre gonna listen to Jane's new album... which im hyped for, but just curious, have you listened to her first album Frailty?? it is one of the best things to come out of the hyperpop scene probably ever... and if you havent listened to it in full front to back, i would highly reccomend you do. it is an experience. Especially if you were a fan of IDMTHY... theyre kinda in similar categories of just insane sounding music.

Thats one reading for sure! Afaik she has said herself that the album started out pretty divorced from her gender identity and more focused on the story at hand, but that she slowly introduced more themes related to queerness and identity as she discovered them in her own lyrics for the project.
