UNDERSTAND Strumming | Guitar Lesson 

I struggle with strumming rhythm, despite weekly guitar lessons.This is a very clear and concise way of explaining off beats. Thanks Joe.

I was sitting with a guitar learning a Van Morrison song and thought to myself, I know these chords why not write my own songs. So I actually did write a song and felt great, I wrote the words and arranged the simple chords and it was like WOW, I wrote it. So then realised that if I can write one I can write another, so I did and I got in with some musicians, proper musicians too. I was blessed to be in the position where these guys would help me arrange the chord progressions and show how make them work. This was a revelation, because I had been doing covers before that. Now I had a band and we did a covers and some of my songs. I got the bug, the bass player showed me a nice blues riff one day and I wrote a song around it. I wrote a reggae song called Jamaican and the band could do that too, we did it for a mainly Jamaican audience and they loved it. So listen, I am 71 years old now but if I can write a few simple songs then anybody who really wants to do the same, give it a go. It makes one learn and having musicians who KNOW there chops one can learn. As for strumming, I just do it quite naturally, nothing is easy when you don't know how but we are all still learning.

Phantom down strums = a purposefully " missed" strums, but a phantom upstroke could be a "circle round" from below the strings, returning the pick to an "above the strings" positions. Done right, it sets up the pick and hand angle for the next down strum.
