Understand Your Family Drama with Greek Tragedy

In the study of the impact of the family structure on the individual and society at large there has been many theoreticians and practitioners but none as influential as Murray Bowen and Salvador Minuchin. According to Bowen, family systems theory is a theory of human behavior that defines the family unit as a complex social system in which members interact to influence each other's behavior. Family members interconnect, making it appropriate to view the system as a whole rather than as individual elements. Beginning with the fundamental concept of the nuclear family as the emotional unit, the other concepts -- differentiation (liberating oneself from the family "mess") of self-scale, triangles, cutoff, family projection process, multigenerational transmission process, sibling position, and emotional processes of society. The Bowen family systems theory posits that understanding one's family story can help to understand their psyche, their human relationship systems, and how they operate within other aspects of their life as well as their physical and emotional nature and processes. All of us are, the way we act, the way we relate to others at work, at play, etc. is a reflection of our family of origin. In contrast Minuchin believed that families, like any dynamic system, sought stability and so the system would resist change. This homeostasis, as he termed it, existed in part because the system worked: the fact that one family member was symptomatic served a function for the family. Minuchin developed structural family intervention (therapy). This approach is based on the fundamental idea that the family structure is responsible for its problems. More specifically, Minuchin believed a family needed to maintain a certain hierarchy and boundaries to remain healthy. Once this family structure begins to collapse (family breakdown) societies will collapse. Crime, violence, conflict are symptoms of this collapse. He (Minuchin) believed that there are two common patterns in a troubled families and societies. These common elements were enmeshed families (confused and tightly interconnected) and disengaged families (isolated and seemingly unconnected). This video (just in 10 minutes) tries to introduce a very complicated topic (through the use of Greek Literature) which I believe is an essential component in understanding what is happening in our culture in our families today! In 2024 in the USA the family structure in almost at the state of collapse and we are in a serious crisis. Very interesting video and commentary by the professor. Keep up the good job. Thank you.
