Canada should have the right to control what ships go thru their waters it is not an international passage like the English channel or the straight of Gibraltar as those are bored by more than one country while the northwest passage is nearly entirely in Canada. I think this issue threatens Canada's sovereignty. As an American I can say I am totally against the U.S. government on this issue I believe we should be helping support Canada's sovereignty not undermine it.

But no one is disputing whether it’s Canada’s or not. Did you not watch the video? They are disputing whether Canada has a right to check who comes and goes. It may be in their waters but it’s a special case. It’s an international straight, very much used by most countries. Canada just happens to have its islands surrounding it within a 10km range.
@coledavis5212
@coledavis5212 4 года назад
Al Costello It really shouldn’t count as an international straight. Both the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal are both taxed by their respective countries and they actually count as international straights. The diffference with the passage is you can actually go around it.

@@coledavis5212 The Panama Canal and Suez Canal are canals, these took billions of dollars to build and goes through what was once land. If Canada builds a canal then that is theirs to regulate as they wish. The Canadian straits were not created by hard work and thus aren't the same.

There are several other disagreements with the US about Canadian territorial waters with the US claiming any water within 200 miles of their land even wrapping into Canadian shores whereas Canada goes by the convention of dividing the territory in a straight line out from the border of US and Canada. So far, this has been resolved by an agreement to disagree. You're a little late to the being angry game.

there is no international waters in between those Canadian islands. meaning there is coast line within 10km of each of those islands. which means, we have complete control over them, international spills in those waters will leave us to clean it up and deal with the consequences of those spills. this is nothing like the straight of Gibraltar, that is a straight that is between Two Different Nations. Driving international ships through our Arctic would be like allowing international ships cut through the Aleutian Islands or Nantucket island, because it can save them a buck or two. That is all.

I hate to say this, but the incompetence of Ottawa is getting a bit ridiculous to the point it's becoming a regional security problem. The United States is facing serious future global strategic issues. We simply cannot allow Russia or China to gain a strategic or economic foothold in the arctic. The United States will inevitably need to annex everything west of Ontario to the Northwest Passage. Our global strategic needs are far too great. The fact that Canada has been living under the United States defense umbrella for over 70 years with very little contribution needs to come to an end. Eastern Canada has been living under the US defense umbrella long enough, and they have been sucking off the teat of Alberta's oil revenue transfer payments to feed their aging socialist population. Frankly, everyone's getting a bit fed up with it. Canada has the worlds largest shoreline, and only 8,000 sailors to defend it. Canada also has the 2nd largest land mass with some of the most important natural resources in the world, yet only 75,000 soldiers to defend it. I'm sorry, but a nation that cannot defend itself is not sovereign. In reality, Canada really hasn't been truly sovereign for over 70 years. It only exists because of the United States as an over-seeing protector. You all may need to get used to the idea of statehood with more freedom and free travel across all of North America. Once Canada becomes part of the United States, we can finally build the multi-branched railway system all the way to the northern shore with no impeding regulations, build a US Naval base to finally control and patrol the Passage. This is the only way to ensure free commerce without harassment from Russia or China. We won't have nearly the problems from Russia and China making claims of ownership in the arctic, like they do now. If they do, they'll learn to shut their mouths the hard way, like they did by playing tag with our submarines during the cold war.

The NWP weaves and winds its way around Canadian islands in the high Arctic and is not bordered by any other country. Therefor its within Canada"s territorial boundary. These countries disputing the rights to the NWP know very well that whoever controls this passage will become very powerful economically because it will have total control over this waterway and a direct impact on the future world economy. They are ALL very aware that this waterway is Canadian and are trying to weasel their way around that fact by stating that these are international waters. I am also very upset that our greatest ALLY and trading partner the USA is partaking in this dispute instead of supporting us to assure that these waters remain firmly in Canadian control (rightfully so).And because of the special, close and unique relationship it has with Canada, this could be very beneficial to the U.S also. But Americans have no vision and are bad neighbors who see us as weak and to be taken advantage of . Shame on these greedy countries and shame on the U.S.A especially.

So Canada is in full support of commercial shipping through the passage, and we want to protect the environment of the passage too. We don't need "full control" of the passage to do these things. This is all talk and no action. What are the actual actions Canada will take to protect the environment in the NWP and will any countries using it object to them? That's the real question.

Huge Difference in the minds of Good political Leaders and Good Experts. Thank Mr. Byers for his knowledge on the Arctic but No Thank prof. of Global Politics Int Law. If any PM takes political advice from him we would lose not only the Passage but also the Arctic. Good Leaders read the mind of, predict the actions of adversaries and plan ahead. Good experts study all facts and facts, write good books and talk like … 'know all' - after being struck! The prof said clearly @ 4:52, "…the threat from China … I'd suggest was overblown and not well grounded in term of facts…" That’s how intellectuals, professors, scholars, journalists were fooled by lowly educated communists during the Vietnam war. And how the #1 superpower lost to 11th out of 10 rated power! Just like Mr. Byers today can't see the coming of China and Russia bcs still waiting more facts! Russian and China have not behaved too badly bcs of the US, not Canada and bcs no need now. Our PM must act strongly in protecting our sovereignty. Otherwise, the other 3 will push us off the ice. How about a deal allowing the US freer access in exchange for recognizing our full control of and help us patrol the Passage? How about signing the Russian NORAD if the US rejects? After all, Canada needs strong leaders as well as muscles in protecting itself effectively.

Part of this makes some sense. If the US concedes Canada's claims about the Northwest Passage, then how can the US argue against the claims of China in the South China Sea? But there is clearly a difference between a few rocky reefs in the South China Sea and 1,500 miles of Canadian islands in the Arctic. The Northwest Passage passes right through Canada, but the waters in the South China Sea do not pass through China. Not mentioned in this video is the fact that Russia has the world's best icebreakers and their warships would have the best chances in passing through the Northwest Passage. But you don't hear the Russians arguing against Canada's claims. Why? Because they have the same issue with the Kerch Strait, which give access to the Sea of Azov. Canada may some day have to mine the Northwest Passage to prevent foreign warships from using it.
