This guy is just amazing. When I was struggling with learning the positions of the Pentatonics, I saw one video of his and I learnt all of them that day. When I was struggling with the Major scale and it's modes, another video and I learnt it. And now I'm working on triads and there always a Rick Beato video to learn from.
Those first, second, third position... drop two, drop three inversions really help diversify your sound and facilitate voice leading and other things we might be trying to achieve in our playing. Thanks for this valuable lesson Rick. Really looking forward to the upcoming pattern picking lesson(s) you alluded to as well. - These videos, in addition to and in conjunction with the Beato Book, have been absolutely invaluable in helping me to tweak and perfect my own compositions. Really grateful for all you do!
Rick, first congratulations on your Peter Frampton interview. I was blown away. Secondly, this video is enormously helpful to me (and I'm sure others) I own the Beato Book and this companion video helps motivate me to learn the material. It also adds a whole other dimension to understanding the material. Anytime you can offer a video which corresponds with the book its just huge for us. Thank you so much.
Your channel is an infinite plethora of musical widom and I hope to review it ALL in the years to come. Thanks for everything Rick! Oh, thanks for the accoustic stuff, I really relate to strings and tonewoods sir.
very informative, thank you for your time! People like you are the reason I can play guitar today. I never had money growing up in a poor family so I never had the option of being taught by someone except youtubers like yourself, Steve Stine and Marty Swartz.
Killer lesson Rick, i just rewatched it now. I think its great that you use the Beato Book as references and tell us what pages we can find this info , that makes it much easier to follow. Excellent work!
Finally printed my Beato Book and had it spiral bound. Highly recommend doing....personally find it much easier to work with. Great book with tons of good stuff. Rick's done all the hard work for us.
RD Patterson ... I’ve been thinking about that too, did you do it at home or did you have it done at a Kinko’s or some other duplication place and if so how much did it cost ? thanks
Let me tell you what I've found I've pored over the Rameau system of roots and inversions then I stumbled onto 18th century basso continuo no roots just the bass note and a figure (with the implied voice leading) . It made my life so easy
Thanks for references the Beato Book pages. I always have it open on my 2nd screen when you are showing this kind of stuff. It is great to have a visual reference to go with the fingerings on my D'Angelico Premier 335 clone. It is always in my hands when I watch your videos.
Great vid!! If I can make a suggestion, it would be awesome if when discussing chords and chord shapes, you overlay a chord chart when playing the chord. I know that is impossible when streaming live, but perhaps when you add it to your channel afterwards, that can be put in. Awesome information as always and thanks for your knowledge!
Thanks Rick some many great ideas to break the basic mould I hope with all this free knowledge we get more interesting and creative music everybody wins cheers
Yeah even through his webcam mic it's awesome. Most high end guitars sound good but some cheaper guitars can sound just as good. Next time you shop around and find a guitar you like ask them if they have any other examples of the same guitar. Sounds crazy and they might think your a pain in the ass but if you plan on making a purchase
Rick, I know this is 4 years old. I just started to learn more about triads. I do have your Beato book so I really excited to put more information into action. My question, I’ve always been a pick player, how important is it to develop finger style to play triads and drop voicing? I thinking this is an opportunity to learn both finger style and triads at the same time.
Cheers for this, I've been looking for "learn guitar chords free" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Fanwen Ziyaria System - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my neighbour got cool results with it.
Greetings to you from Ireland! Great video as always Rick - I learned a lot from your excellent explanations. Many thanks for sharing your vast knowledge and expertise.
I wish that I hadn't missed this when it was LIVE...bummer! I always enjoy your Live Streams...the people in the chat room are awesome!! I enjoyed coffee from my favorite cup today...the 'Rick Beato at Everything Music' mug. Thank you, Rick, for your beyond-excellent channel!!! 💗💗💗
Rick, how about doing a special " what makes this song great " on any one of the band " Camels " tune or a special on Andy Latimer,,,,a very gifted and talented guy .....a lot of us prog rockers grew up with him and Camel....
Curious how he would have felt about the improvisation aspect of some jazz. Idk why but I imagine Bach hearing the music in his head and writing out the notation before even touch the piano. For some reason I imagine him thinking improv was blasphemy or someshit. I'm sure he would have loved jazz but maybe he cringes when he finds out certain people were just winging it/improv.
@@MaynardOwns Bach was actually well known in his day as a brilliant improviser. There's an interesting anecdote about him being in the court of Frederick the Great, where his son, Carl Philipp Emanuel was a court musician. He was challenged to improvise a 3-voice fugue on a very chromatic theme which he did on the spot. Then he was asked to do a 6-voice fugue, to which he said that he'll need time to complete it due to how complex the task was. He published Das Musikalische Opfer soon afterwards
Loooove being able to reference the Beato Book when watching these vids :) Thoughts on doing a video on Pat Martino's "Linear Expressions"? would love to hear your opinion, key takeaways, use cases, etc from that book
gr8 video . i watched your interview with Frampton was great it looked like he enjoyed talking with you ;.;. can you please interview Trower !!! thanks again for the gr8 content .
Check out Rick's "3 Things To Improve Your Guitar Playing Fast" video for more on spread triads. Those two video's; "3 Things" and "3 More Things" are stellar.
Bet next time you jam with people that stuck to major minor bar chords and the cage chords(open shape chords across the neck) you're gonna be like "laaaaaame"
Chord inversions are related to harmony theory but in music the theory is not always the rule.Else how can be explained the parallel fifths played continously in metal and the cursed from harmony tritone interval played both in rock n roll rythm one after the other.
COOLBIAN57 Hope you're trolling, if not... Well think again, that's really superficial, they're the Blueprint for prog metal and saying they're boring and soulless is as inaccurate as saying Bach is all technique exercize and no soul, to me. Their discography is really diverse and various, with quite some really deep and emotional pieces. Maybe you haven't listened to them properly enough or in the right mood. But you're probably trolling...
COOLBIAN57 well, i disagree with your argument, but I see it, probably in the last years/albums (basically after Portnoy) you're probably right, they've lost that real vibe and became a bit cheesy in many songs, but in most of their previous works i see some amazing musicians that are also quite enthusiast and passionate about what they're doing, I could just see that in their faces. I saw them 3 times now, even if not in the Images and Words or Metropolis period (the best in my opinion). Anyways you got any cool band that are doing more interesting stuff rn to suggest?
Ive watched a lot of ricks vids since subscribing a while back.He regularly mentions the book. For some reason ive never clicked on the link, til now.Looks pretty interesting. For anyone that has it,do you need some strong knowledge of theory to get the most out of it, or is it easy for beginners to theory to digest?Cheers
hey Rick. love your channel. learning a lot here. you are a great teacher. thanks for sharing your knowledge brother! is your hair actually getting darker? lol lucky
I guess inversions are not just about 'sounding interesting'. It's more about nice voiceleading (when bass voice is allowed to jump, other voices moves in semitone/wholetone)
It also creates a really cool contrapuntal bass line, more compositional/orchestration material to work with! I talked about that a little in my latest video
I think that's a specific "Music Theory 101" rule that pertains to how Bach voice led... If people followed that hard rule, all power chords would be invalid haha. Cheers!
@@Deliquescentinsight : I have very little formal training and never learned to read. I know the difference between open and barre cords ( 1st, 2nd and 3rd position ) I'm mostly self taught along with whatever I could pick up from playing with other players . I get confused with all the tech Rick gets into. I know that sounds stupid to people who get this info. but I can get lost in the introduction to the video. Thanks for replying Michael .
@@orionfixr7713 Orion, do you have basic knowledge of scales?? I don't mean if you know them all and have them memorized, but do you know what the root and intervals are? Modes? If not, that's where you should start. Learn the major and minor scales and all of their intervals. Most of music is based off of these and you will be speaking the language of Mr Beato by taking the time to learn them or at least how they are built. :)
@@rickm1255 . Well at least I have a place to start. Wish me luck! And thank you for taking the time to reply . I know only the open scale and the names of the notes and the pentatonic scale one of my friends showed me long ago and if I went real slow I know how to figure out what the note names are for that. Once again thanks for taking the time.
Hey Rick. I wonder if you are interested in getting your youtube videos captioned and translated to spanish. I wrote you on twitter, DM if you are interested.
Another horrible explanation by Rick, actually i didn’t watch it all the way because I learned from past videos that Rick explains things as if he talking with a graduate student or as if he doesn’t have patients. Just because someone can demonstrate that they know allot about something doesn’t mean they can teach it well, and that applies to Rick.
