In the 2000s an underground subgenre of progressive metal has been gradually growing taking it's official start in 2009 with Animals as Leaders' self-titled debut release and Periphery's self-titled debut release in 2010. Most of the time this sub-genre of progressive metal would be called 'Djent'! Over the years 'Djent' has gained both praise and criticism. In this video, I will go into more details of this topic.

No problem. I think as I stated in the video the high end high gain has become an important aspect of modern Prog... and Sikth definitely played a role in how it’s used now

Hi everyone! It’s been 17 days since my last upload. But as you can see this video is over 15 minutes long which is the longest video I made to date, which is why it took so long. Sorry this video will not have subs for now, as I really can not postpone this upload any longer. But I am on it. I am as well writing for 2 more videos 1 of which should be released this month! As usual like if you like, comment and subscribe if you are new! Thanks! JD

People always overlook the importance of Fellsilent on djent. Misha almost certainly took notes from those guys, guys who later went on to form Tesseract and Monuments. Fellsilent had the quintessential djent guitar tone before anyone else.

Hi, Sure I can. Well most of basic info the skeleton of it things such numbers and dates are from Wikipedia. But I knew quite a lot of information about the bands myself because I have been following Periphery since 2008 or 2009 when they still had MySpace page... with Barreto doing vocals on Lights and I even remember their cover with him on Michael Jackon's Black or White just when Jackson died. But their really old video material I used I could find on their official RU-vid page. When I was making the video it was still there. And Tesseract I have been following since 2010 or 2011, so I know all complex history with their singers as I was there almost from the start of their actual career. Meshuggah has a long history I know it only briefly they formed in late 80's and they are largely responsible for this unique "djent" sound, my advice would be for you to learn more about them as they are Godfathers of this movement and it is universally accepted that after all these years and many many bands no one does it like Meshuggah! Sikth was a little more difficult to crack as they are less mainstream and resumed their activity only recently... Majority of content is on Wikipedia! Most of the videos I used I could find here on YT. Another thing I usually do is check if there is any fiction on Wikipedia... So I watch Wikipedia Fact or Fiction to confirm some of the stuff that is written there because I found that there are mistakes here and there. If there is something else I could help with you can DM me on Insta... link on my channel! Thanks for compliments and your interest.

Are Plini and Intervals their own thing? Owane/Arch Echo possibly included w/ the fusion element. Not denying the prog/djent influence just seems they’ve broken off to some extent.

Damn, you put a lot of effort into the making of this video. I think Djent is having the same problem that every metal genre is having somewhere. There are way too many bands simply copying artists and therefore oversaturating the market. In the specific case of Djent that means that bands who are not progressive in any way try to write offtime 4/4 riffs that still consist of basic power chords or single notes (e.g. "Wormholes" by Volumes). I think metal music (as almost every traditional genre) has a problem: There is no room for innovation anymore. Everything has been done... and I think that is the reason why bands are always copying things. Everyday there are new metalcore or Djent related bands coming up as it was the latest "big thing" for metal... not even close to the popularity of Nu Metal though which was a completely new thing. It sounded completely different from the kind of metal that was popular up to this time. But that cannot be done again. In my opinion, the overall idea of "Heavy Metal" is thought through. The metal and rock bands who are still successful are either established ones or such ones returning to the classic (hard) rock sound (e.g. Airbourne, Greta Van Fleet). Metal is slowly dying out.
@saysthemanbehindthemask
@saysthemanbehindthemask 5 лет назад
Well thank you! Yes this was not an easy one to make. As for metal dying out... is sad but kind of true... unfortunately I have to agree. It has been well explored and there is very little for exploration left. Djent has been the last big thing in metal music but it’s been nearly 10 years since it blew up... and I don’t really see anything new on the horizon . Depressing really... as an aspiring musician my self it’s quite discouraging. Thank you for a thoughtful comment!

Most of the progenitors of djent hate the name themselves and wouldn’t use the word to describe their work. They’d say it’s just progressive metal. Cheers.

saystheman behindthemask also glad you mentioned the holy trinity of modern progressive metal: Periphery, Tesseract, Monuments. It would be cool to see you do a vid of how Fell Silent essentially gave us two of the best modern prog metal bands.

saystheman behindthemask Yeah! John Browne and Acle were in there together until ~2010. Then they split to focus on Monuments and Tesseract respectively. Fell Silent is pretty wicked stuff.

@saysthemanbehindthemask
@saysthemanbehindthemask 4 года назад
Man totally different bands... the only similarity is that if there was no MESHUGGAH there would be no VITALISM. =D Besides it seems to me that they are trying too hard... and the result is kind of underwhelming. I honestly can't stand any new Djent act that came about after 2014. There is no creativity whatsoever and reliance on that Low string has gotten old pretty quick as it sounds exactly the same in every band... keeping in mind that the production of every new djent act sounds exactly the same... that i can't even tell who is who. When I hear Meshuggah I know it's them. Along with a few acts that started this thing early and managed to actually keep it tasteful and recognisable.

No hate or disrespect intended, but this genre is highly BORING. It is like Satriani's or Vai's music. Super technique and such but still boring as fuck.
@saysthemanbehindthemask
@saysthemanbehindthemask 2 года назад
I know what you mean. Largely I had enough of it by 2013 when everyone started copying each other. But I still think Tesseract did well as they have a sound of their own at least more so than majority of other Djent bands… periphery’s last record was cool as well… and MESHUGGAH is in a league of their own even all these years they have been around.
@nicolasbenjamin9453
@nicolasbenjamin9453 4 года назад
i have done 8 years in school music, and sorry for this but the djent isn't a good variety of metal, they try to play hardest composition of all times, and they absolutly don't masteries their compositions, just djent is bad.
@saysthemanbehindthemask
@saysthemanbehindthemask 4 года назад
You don’t have to like it but I wish you elaborated a little as to why. Just saying “it’s not good” doesn’t cut it. I myself got tired of it pretty quickly to be honest... a couple bands I still follow... well not a couple... 1 = Tesseract. I think the reasoning for that is because they give bass some room to breath and Daniel Tompkins is one of the best metal singers in the past 10 years. Periphery’s “Hail Stan” is quite an interesting piece of work, it’s not perfect but worth a praise. But also they kind of stopped relying on that Djent sound as much as sooo many new bands that are coming out rely on. I honestly don’t understand why young bands still try to play the same Djent structure and sound thing over and over. It got old very quickly at least to me. By 2014 I’ve had enough really. Hmm, but you can’t say Tosin Abasi is not a worthy guitarist as well now can you? Difficult topic.
