It dawned on me as I was watching this that it is a blessing in disguise that I am on low income and can't afford a lot of the "health" foods that I see in the supermarket. I get a lot of exercise in my apartment by following workout videos and not paying for a gym membership, either - it's dismaying how they prey upon people who are trying to do something good for themselves. And now the science herd in me will have to figure out exactly how many packages of celery it would take to make 500 calories, and how much it would cost.

You can't say there's no superfoods because first you must define what is superfood. There's no formal scientific definition of superfood. I'd say, there are some foods that are probably unique from perspective of some measurable metrics like nutrient density (for example liver) or other effects, but are they necessary to be healthy? Probably not. Might be helpful to enhance your diet.

I should have added Brussel Sprouts and Black Beans as snack ages ago. They are more saturing than almost anything I tried on that calorie level. I can eat them warm and add calorie free hot sauce. There was no cost in doing so and what happened was that they heavily reduced my risk for overeating, bingeeating and snacking on other stuff, which means I heavily reduced my average calorie intake. Hard Evidence, I dunno. Apperantly it has to do with the soluble fibers in them.

Haven't you ever heard of rabbit starvation? If you eat only rabbit meat, no matter how much, you will still loose weight and starve eventually. This is because the calories from protein via gluconeogenesis requires fat burning to make atp for the conversion. When the process is done you are left with less atp from the glucose than used to make it. So you need actual pure energy calories like carbs or fat to either supply glucose (carbs) or support gluconeogenesis when carbs are low (fats).

One stupid question for anyone out there and please, pardon my ignorance.. Does anyone know if all scientists take into account osmosis and diffusion when exposing on a Petri dish any type of cell to a high amount of solute? Is that also one of many reasons why high amounts of anything are toxic for cells? I’m sure all scientists take that into account; however, I just wanted to make sure.. Thanks a lot... Peace ✌️

I think people need to understand the difference between MACRONUTRIENTS and MICRONUTRIENTS, and realize that it's called "macro" because it should be addressed first. People don't realize that bodyweight it's going to be the #1 driver of health markers, when you have that in check (or you're working on it) then you should address micros.

Where did you hear PUFA's are health foods?
@peterzhang5458
@peterzhang5458 5 лет назад
Nathan Reed both PUFA and MUFA have been shown to have health benefits compared to saturated fats/trans fats. The issue with modern diets is that most PUFAs we consume are omega-6, and an imbalanced omega6:omega3 consumption ratio might lead to increased inflammation because omega 6 can be converted into inflammatory eicosanoids via oxidation of arachadonic acid. Obviously the biology of all of this is not as simple as this comment makes it out to be, but this is the general understanding right now. Moral of the story: PUFAs prob get a bad rep for having high levels of omega 6 compared to omega 3s, but that doesn’t mean you should necessarily avoid Omega 6 PUFAs. Instead increasing intake of omega 3 PUFAs relative to your omega 6 intake could help you achieve a healthy ratio of PUFAs.
@peterzhang5458
@peterzhang5458 5 лет назад
But like Dr. Norton said, don’t just eat a ton of PUFA unless you’re replacing saturated/trans fats
@40calnate74
@40calnate74 5 лет назад
@@peterzhang5458 Thanks for your input.
@Nmyers91
@Nmyers91 5 лет назад
Shuheng Zhang too much absolute pufa intake isn’t healthy whether or not it’s o3 or o6. We need just some preferably long chain ones found in fatty animal foods. They aren’t good as an energy source and when are elevated too far in the diet can be inflammatory due to their ease of oxidation. Saturated fats and monounsaturated are both superior as fuels to be metabolized in high amounts. A good ratio with small yet adequate amounts of pufas is best. Plus the most abundant pufa sources are all rancid seed oils and nuts which have usually oxidized as well. Avoiding high pufa foods is generally good

Eat more nuts at the cost of eating fewer Doritos? Let me get back to you on that. Seriously though, I think these questions are also relevant to habit formation. People often overlook the cost of giving up their old “bad” habits. If we didn’t get some enjoyment out of watching TV and munching on chips, we wouldn’t do it. If we’re going to switch from activities that feel good right now to activities that are more rewarding but pay off later, we’ll need something to bridge that gap. Discipline is the big one, but there are also things like camaraderie and celebrating the small victories.

Constructive criticism: I know 90% of the world and all scientists use metric, and it's really not hard to multiply by 2.2 in your head. Still, for the US audience, saying 22 pounds of celery communicates your point more clearly. Besides, if it's too much trouble for you to give units in pounds and kilos, then it's probably too much to expect your audience to do the mental math.
