If you have a casual playgroup. The most fun you will have playing magic is a 4 player mono red battle. Fast fun games. Most time we all die at the same time which is the most glorious red victory.
Red has 3 forms of carddraw: loot, wheel, Impulse. Reds ramp also goes an explosive/temporary way: rituals, treasures, or cantripy (cast something get red) Or normal by manarocks but they arent red outside of lavabrink floodgates or orb of dragonkind and both you can loose on a red way :) There are also spellslinger/cantrip strategies that over the years got stronger support. Zada eg. is a really strong commander (imo the strongest in monored outside of cedh and even there it can stomp xD) Oh and one thing red also has are groupslug strategies. Typical are ashling the pilgrim or heardless hidetsugu. They equip some lifelink and go nutz :) Sidenote: a friend of mine used ashling and got over 4000 life cause of lifelink onto his commander and fighting against a teysa deck with Afterlife xD
I'm a mono red player in commander. Haven't seen the video yet but I hope it will show off some of the under appreciated strengths in red that isnt just goblins swinging. There is alot of value in red it's just not as in your face as sulti is
Red does a brilliant job of speeding up games and making things more lethal, whether it be double strike, power boosts or extra combats or turning anything you do into damage dealing. When used alongside other colours it tends to be a support colour that offers these kind of effects to whatever you're doing in the other colours. It really amplifies other strategies but lacks the depth in itself to do all that commander demands.
I've recently come back to MTG after not having much interest in it for quite a while (and even when I did it was only temporarily) but for some reason when I hear about how great the other colours are I just keep coming back to red. I even told myself I would go for a red/white deck but I just went for mono red. Now I'm currently making my first mono red Commander deck (Magda, if anyone's curious) and every now and then I need reassurance from my friends that it's OK to play mono red, every colour (mixed and mono) has their strengths and weaknesses
My playgroup uses commanders like Tegrid, Lord Xander and korvold so wanna come teach em a lesson for me? Lmao. Those guys are the reason I just made a Shattergang deck. Also if you want a commander that seems weak but can be a power house if done right..Ishi-ishi Akki Crackshot.
