Welcome to Understanding Pottery, Chapter 15: Electric Kilns Part 3
This episode is focused on electric kilns with special emphasis on differences in the procedures used for firing compared to fuel-burning kilns. Electric kilns offer a number of advantages, but they also have shortcomings, and because of the apparent ease of operation, they can contribute to poor firing practices. We will talk about tips for avoiding problems and achieving better results.
The next topic in the series is Electric Kilns Part 4.

All the information is so helpful, but I would love to hear more about firing a manual kiln.

Desi Anderson, unfortunately Phil passed away in July and I have no experience firing a manual kiln. I will try to find someone with experience and do a video on the process. We do have a couple videos about using cones in a kiln sitter (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HBR-AccpCmY.html) and adjusting a kiln sitter (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-27Rm-wTG7sY.html), but that's all we have. Sorry.

Thank you for the lecture. I just purchased a small kiln (Skutt km714) that goes to cone 8. I have been told that I should not ever go to cone 8 because the heat will degrade the elements quickly. I would like to fire to cone 6. Would this be alright? Thank you for the recommendation regarding the venting options. I did not realize the fumes degrade the elements over time.

Thank you for watching and especially for commenting! Yes, cone 6 will be fine. As a general rule, the higher you fire the harder it is on the elements. Kiln manufacturers will put elements in the kiln to provide reasonable performance at the rated limits for the kiln. What that means is firing to cone 8 would not really be a problem although it does stress the elements slightly more. A friend of mine has an electric kiln he uses only for bisque firing and has been using the same elements for over 20 years. I have an electric kiln that I fire mostly to cone 06 bisque and cone 6 glaze with the occasional cone 10 firing and my elements lasted 10 years. I average 12 bisque and 12 glaze firings a year. The key really is venting the kiln. Best of luck with your kiln!

These lectures are fantastic! Except for the screeching women, I could listen for the entire session... the screeching women, though. Ugh.
