Running workouts: how does a running workout differ from a training run?
In this video, we dive into three different types of "running workouts", tempo runs, interval runs, and fartlek runs. If you've been running for a while, adding one of these workouts to your weekly running plan can help improve your running speed and strength.
Tempo runs: Comfortably hard, sustained efforts, no rest.
Interval runs: Hard efforts, varying lengths and time, rest.
Fartlek runs: Fun running - like an off leash dog in the woods! Hard, easy, short, sustained, rest, no rest.

I really recognize myself in the fartlek approach. I often go out with just an idea of where I want to run, roughly, and then I might decide to run fast in the coming hill, of do a few fast km with slower paces/drills inbetween or whatever. It does make the run fun and varied. I also think that after a while running, your body kinda know what you need, if you only listen to it.

Best explanation I’ve seen. The whiteboard graphs really made it work for me. Thanks 👌

Fartlek does mean speedplay but it is Swedish, not Finnish :)

What you described with the dog example is high intensity interval training, HIIT, fartlek is more about going up&down in gears, where a sprint might be 5th gear, or 6th, and a walk would be neutral thereby making fartlek a means if going between 1st gear 3rd gear 2nd gear 4th gear 2nd gear 3rd gear 1st gear, however you are comfortable, pick those gears and pick your own pattern

Fartlek training makes the time too slow but worth it after finishing it. 🤘

Nice video. I'd add a 4th workout. A progressive run...start off very slow and keep adding a little bit more speed every 500m or so...maybe aim to hit marathon pace after 8 or 9km

I started doing them. I like the uncomfortable but comfortable tempos, fartleks are just great 😃.. intervals not so much. I was doing my first interval training ...200m intervals... After my first lap my right quad, calf and right side lower back felt so tight ... I am thinking of not doing them for a while. maybe I am not ready for intervals🤧😭😭

Hi! I have a question, is this normal that my heart rate is very low when resting, and when running heartbeat goes up quickly, i have minimum 150 bpm when running slow 6min/km, and it only increases to 160-165 when running at pace @min/km? im 20yo, thanks for advice

A fartlek I like doing is 3 x (3-3-3-1) with about 20" increments between the steps. Great 30' with some speedwork sprinkled on top.

I'm exceptionally new to all of this, could you break down exactly what you are referring to within the parentheses?

that's duration expressed in minutes.

How about Fartlek = Track on a longer road run (especially for those who do not live near a track)

A variety! They all progress your speed and fitness in different ways, so mixing them up gives a great benefit when added to some slow easy runs and gently increasing your long run each week to build up the all important base. Search for something like the 80/20 method as a good starting point. And giving yourself some good rest periods from time to time to allow your body and respiratory system some down time while it recovers and strengthens from all your efforts
