Dear Dylan, of all the videos that I've seen explaining the scopes on the editing softwares, your videos are the most clear and concise of them all. Thank you for doing this. I send you a big hug from Italy.

Thank you so much, my friend. I really try to make my language as clear as possible. I'm glad you thought I succeeded in that. I realize this tutorial may have been a little fast, but I made it back when I wasn't fully comfortable with pacing in RU-vid videos. Thanks for watching and commenting man. Just want to apologize if you felt I went too fast. I definitely did 😂This was created a couple years ago when I still didn't know what the right pacing was for RU-vid videos. For this video, you can slow the playback speed to '.75' by clicking on the gear icon and then hit playback speed. Hopefully that helps! ALSO, I'm thinking of recreating this now that I've been on RU-vid for a couple years, but I need to know that's something you guys would want. Let me know in the comments and hit the like button to let me know it's worth it to make this again!

This is one of the most important yet overlooked aspects of editing. This goes hand-in-hand with people not calibrating their monitors but rather setting levels to whatever looks good on their setup. Then they complain that their colours or brightness etc is wrong on someone else’s TV. Some of them even adjust the TV to match their video. Wrong on so many levels. The use of scopes and the reason they are important needs to be driven home more and more to people who want to take their editing seriously. One little bit of trivia: those little square boxes on the vectorscope correspond to each colour in your standard colour bars image. If you put proper colour bars up on your screen the trace pattern will connect up the dots perfectly. Also if you drew a line around from box to box to form a sort of lopsided octagon shape, the colour saturation levels should not go outside of any of the line segments. Kind of a weird description, but the best I could come up with at the moment.

Hello Dylan, thank's for your excellent explanation. Can you explain one thing. My luma levels are fine, everything between 0 and 100 . But at the same time my RGB parade the blue's are often far below 0 point. In your tutorial at 40 seconds you can see what i mean. Also there the blue is far below 0. I have tried everything to get it right but no results. When I lower the color it will help but then there is no color. I hope you have the answer. It's driving me crazy. Cheers Richard
@dylanjohndickerson
@dylanjohndickerson 4 года назад
Hey Richard! You're very welcome. So don't worry about identifying whether your shot is the correct exposure by using the RGB Parade. The RGB parade shows the distribution of color components in your shot, displayed as Red, Green, and Blue. Use the luma waveform to determine if your exposure is correct, since that scope is designed for determining the brightness of your shot. If your shot is showing correct values between 0 and 100 IRE when looking at the Luma Waveform, then you're in the clear.

When using the RGB overlay and looking at skin tones, is our goal to have the red, green, and blue lines all overlap with each other to have the right white balance?
@dylanjohndickerson
@dylanjohndickerson 2 года назад
For the most part, yes. But not always. It's better to find something in your shot that's gray or white and use that as a reference point to line up the RGB values on the RGB Overlay.
@J_bui
@J_bui 2 года назад
@@dylanjohndickerson What if we don’t necessarily have white or grey in the shot?
@dylanjohndickerson
@dylanjohndickerson 2 года назад
@@J_bui Try and find a neutral color and use that as a reference point. But the reason that this isn't always 100% accurate is because if your shot is taken, let's say, at sunset, then your RGB overlay should be showing an increase in Red values on the RGB overlay. Trying to overlap the colors in that instance would take out that natural orange glow from the shot. Even during sunsets though, skin should be pretty close or on the skin tone line on the vectorscope. Try and use that as a reference point.

@dylanjohndickerson
@dylanjohndickerson 4 года назад
Hey Nico, what exactly do you mean my upper limit line?
@NicoManansala
@NicoManansala 4 года назад
Dylan John the number 112 on the upper right corner above the 100 limit..why other camera only 75, and some 100 before the line highlighted
@dylanjohndickerson
@dylanjohndickerson 4 года назад
@@NicoManansala Ah gotcha, that's what I thought. So I'm not sure why it's showing that some cameras only have 75. That shouldn't be right. But how it works is you shouldn't extend your brightness past 100 IRE on that line or you blow your highlights and it's not safe for broadcast. Bringing your shadows down crushes your blacks. The reason there's that 120 line is to indicate appropriate levels for chroma values/color. So for example if you have your RGB Parade up, you don't want any one of those color values to extend lower than -20 or higher than that 120. As for the 112, a buddy of mine clued me in that you can move that line, which I never realized. We both assume it's to mark maybe the correct IRE for your subjects skin or possibly to just mark a specific value you'd like something in your shot to be. Does all of that make sense?

@@stargazer2455 Understandable! I'll make a slower paced one soon. Not sure what the chameleon thing means though haha

This was one of my first big videos and I agree. I've learned since then. What you can do is hit the gear icon in the bottom right of the video and slow down the playback speed. That should help a bit 😊

@@dylanjohndickerson I will because there is so much information (valuable information) that we need to digest properly. Don’t be afraid to make longer videos. You have a good personality and speak clearly that I don’t think watch time will be an issue

@@JoelRiveraMD I really appreciate that Joel. I'll definitely take that suggestion and run with it. Thank you for the honest feedback 🙏🏼

I had to run this at 75% speed. You were going way to fast for us old folk.

Haha my fault Mark! Peoples attention spans are so short nowadays, mine included, so I always try and make the videos quick. I’ll remember to slow down for next time 👌 I included time stamps in the description of you want to go back to certain sections again

Jesus, slow down. Your speed dating on a tutorial.

😂 Totally understandable, Steven Brutosky. This video is over 3 years old. Back when I still wasn't sure how to pace my tutorials. I've since improved haha. If you need to learn from this video though, hit the gear icon and change the playback speed. It'll make the video slower for you.

Good informations but way too fast paced, it's a bit old school YT. More breathing would be appreciated. Good job overall, it's just not my cup of tea.

I agree! I made this about a year ago when I thought that cutting out pauses would be appreciated, but it seems a lot of people appreciate the pauses. I've changed my teaching style since then. Thanks for the heads up! If you're still wanting to learn from the video, you can slowdown the playback speed to something a little slower.

@@dylanjohndickerson Thank you for your answer, your humility honors you. To slow down the playback is a very good idea i will consider that. Have a nice weekend !
