VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
Hi everybody!
In 2023 there were 6.4 million students studying abroad all across the world. But Out of these 6.4 million students, 1.3 million students were just Indians! And if you look at the money they are spending on this study abroad journey, it will blow your mind!! In just 1 year of 2019, Indian students spent 37 billion dollars in studying abroad!!! And this number increased to 47 billion dollars in 2022, and is expected to reach 70 billion in 2025!! You know how much 70 billion dollars is,
It is more than 5 times Reliance Jio’s annual revenue of 12 billion dollars and 1.6 times Tata Motors annual revenue of 42 billion dollars!!!
And if you consider 1.5 million students in 2025 with a 70 billion dollar spend, each student who is studying abroad will spend, 46,666 dollars, or 38.8 lakhs per year on an average!!
Now I don't know if you sense this but, any place where a rich consumer spends with a consistent pattern is a huge market opportunity!! And in India, this is a very rare sight!! Why?? Look at this chart, If you remember our Indus Valley report episode, we learned that the gold mine in India is not 1.4 billion people it is only 22 million people!! Why?? only 22 million people in India pay income tax, 74 million file for taxes, and only 4.5 million as in 0.3% of Indians contribute to 80% of the total income tax paid in India but the rest 1.4 billion people do not pay income tax at all!!!! So if you want to build a fast-growing, high ticket, high margin product to sell in India, this 22 million population is where you can make money!! Everywhere else, you can only make money with low-margin and low-cost products!!
So to understand this consumption class better, Blume Ventures put out this report, which said that India can be categorized as India 1 which is 30 million households with an average income of 15,000 dollars, and India 2 which has 300 million people with an average income of 3000 dollars per person and India 3 which has 1 billion people with an average income of 1000 dollars per person!! and you can see them as 3 different countries, which are Mexico, Indonesia, and Sub-Saharan Africa based on their consumption levels!!
And the consumption of India 1 is so disproportionately high that if you look at this chart, they alone consume 89% of the beauty products, 70% in Dining, and 79% of the entire food and beverage consumption in India!! So 120 million people as in less than 10% of the population is consuming 3 times more than the rest 1.3 Billion people combined!!
And these 13 lakh students who study abroad belong to this golden category of India 1 because they are spending 46 lakh rs a year!!!
So if this small subset of students has a lot of money, a lot of problems, and most importantly, if they all have a common behavior, this means it is a gold mine opportunity for you to build products and services for this one category!!!
This is the reason it is important to study this market both as investors and entrepreneurs!!
So the question is,
What does the higher education market in India look like?
What are the problems students face in their education journey?
What are the gaps that Indian startups are finding to build a business in this space?
And where can you find an opportunity in this space?

To escape the reservation in india moving abroad and keeping money in other currency than INR is necessary. So currently for the general category, having to study in India is the worst thing possible. As soon as you convert the currency back to INR, that money is going to be stuck since the inefficient reserved officials in the government are so slow and sometimes corrupt that it is difficult to even operate properly

Ganesh sir, Please make a video on indian reservation system , is it really helping lower caste people or is it causing our country damage by accelerating brain drain in our country. It is so painful to see our country's human resources getting exported to foreign developed countries . On top of that , INDIA alliance is aiming to even remove the reservation limits. Please make a case study to help us understand the scene in a better way.❤️ And as always, loved your this video too.😊

This is based on the assumption that students go abroad for better education. But I would argue that main driver to study abroad is to settle abroad which includes salaries, facilities, better infrastructure and in general dollar dream. This might work if the proposed Indian universities can provide placement in companies abroad 😊

But for a medical degree scenario is not true. Most of them go to Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia for a low cost MBBS degree. In India the cost to study in private college medicine is so high. That's why doctors who come out of medical colleges mostly loose service mentality. Indians (apart from medicine degree mostly ) have more craze to get PR in foreign countries, That might be mostly true, I agree with that. Our people are attracted to skyscrapers and tall buildings.

I personally moved to Canada just 11 days ago . And let me tell you that the going abroad hype will soon hit its peak as getting work is hard, expense of living is through the roof and getting permits (PR in CA, H1B in USA, etc.) is getting tough by the day if already not. The four major countries are saturating and now people are looking to move more towards smaller European countries. Prasad, this video could've used some research from the aspect of shifting trends and interviews of ground reality as businesses are being built around it, but the platform would certainly be a lot volatile in some time as they loose their sheen.

BITS Pilani ❤❤ at 4:47 1)The point that many students also move abroad due to the quality of professors and research at Indian Universities. Even the best of IITs and BITS have a shortage of very good professors. I am saying this bcz there are many profs who don't know how to teach and manage their courses. The students have to refer some online materials to get the understanding of these courses. 2) Many of the engineering students who are unable to get a good rank in JEE also move abroad so they won't get behind the competition.

Of course PPP is important factor but that wont solve the problem a person earning 23lacks in india will still choose 100k in US or can even live with 80k. And this is more better choice for people who likes traveling abroad or consuming foreign products. As an example a person working in the US will have to spend a lesser part of his salary on flights or other tourist expenses plus if he wants to buy a Tesla or Mustang that would not be a bigger expenditure as compared to an Indian salary. Moreover, a better lifestyle and better use of taxes is an addon.

Also added to that housing rip offs the student by charging extra. Thats why everyone prefers to take rent home or stay with friends. I would be better if someone helps to find them whole home or apartment which lot of indian are doing and makes a business out of it. So in General Indians are earning higher (but because of averages from other sections, it might look lower) 7:28 - $100k personally for me goes a long way than ₹23 lakh in India (because I can save and send way much more money back home)

If someone belongs to lower middle class family for He/She its next to impossible to get a edu loan . If they don't have collateral or co-signer they cant get a loan. There are options like Mpower only works for US uni , and Prodigy Finance which works in multiple countries , They give loans without Co Signer but you would still have to show remaining funds required to travel and sustain. Maybe Some one can capture this market and start something like this in India. This will definitely boom the business.

What we all are missing out here is for most of them going abroad is a flex and for that getting a student visa is an easier ticket. Even though after graduating the person is unemployed or joining gig economy there but still portray their image as superior to indian counterparts of same thing. These young people who are opting just for flex or disguising it with education and prospective package after graduating are very poor in financial literacy. Now people will come after me by saying what about past records and all but they overlook the fact in past 20yrs things have changed with a huge margin.

Great video. The numbers shown are even higher in the actual world. I mean at least for USA. Sending TOEFL scores to Universities cost around 2500 not 250, so maybe u can correct that. I believe financing the biggest opportunity in this market. Bigger than anything u mentioned in the video. And there is a very cultural reason to it. That is Indian community highly values education and can pay any amount to get that right. With that, if a company can tell Indian parents in the lower income group that they don't need to worry about expenses, I am sure people would be willing to pay. Also, the recovery rate of education loan is 100%, so where companies are playing at 11% ROI, they can be disrupted with 7% ROI

Ok there is a flaw in your research, while you are saying 100000 US dollars equivalent to 23 lacs, you missed the point that staying in US you can actually save a lot of money when converted into INR whereas 23 lacs is not just enough to save money and live in the metro city at the same time. So this PPP concept is just a way to comfort Indian students that don’t worry you are not missing much staying in India

Student/Young Professionals Accommodations and the food markets are really the only viable business segment. People go out of the country because they want a new experience - they don't want to shell out 20 lacs in India (MBA Colleges already cost that much).

Why the fees in India is not as compared to PPP with other countries. I say people to go explore how the world looks like and being a student is the best way for it. But dont take huge loans for it. Either go through scholarships or explore Europe its very cheaper compared to India also but you have to work part time in order to cover up your expenses. So if you are open minded want to explore something new early in life take a chance and go. Even if you like country stay there or come back that is your decision but dont spend your family hard earned money in this instead earn yours

Hey there! I've been following the content closely, and while I appreciate the focus on established entities in India, I feel like there's a gap for aspiring individuals, especially students. Many of us tuning in are eager to kickstart our own ventures or initiatives, so it would be awesome if the channel could open up to applications from such folks and provide guidance on how to get started. Regarding the recent video about potentially leaving India, I totally get the need for a hook, but I couldn't help but feel that it didn't quite cater to the student audience as much as usual. It'd be great to see more content that directly adds value to students' lives, maybe by diving into topics like the ones mentioned below: 1. How many of the 1.3 million students studying abroad rely on loans to fund their entire journey? 2. On average, how long does it take for graduates to pay off their student loans? 3. What proportion of the 1.3 million Indian students abroad come from middle-class backgrounds? These questions could spark some interesting discussions in the comments section and provide valuable insights for students navigating their academic and financial journeys. Looking forward to more engaging content!

I think it would take decades, if not a century, to build institutions that can compete with even tier 2 US universities. My question to you is: How will you hire top professors who have an excellent track record in the industry or have an honorable Google Scholar profile if your newly established institution or university has no reputation? The best institute in India is the Indian Institute of Science, which is more than a hundred years old, and it ranks among the likes of tier 2 universities in the US.

Very much true but with a caveat…. The percieved lack of quality jobs in India and the work culture and lifestyle associated with it. We think that people abroad live much more sophisticated with average income much higher than what you get in India. Hence, every family wants to send their children abroad to elevate their social status and guarantee a good life to their children. However the irony is that people living there too perceive Indians working at Indian jobs to be happier, as they too have challenges regarding Visa, housing, and even the fear of losing their jobs. If we can somehow convince these people that something similar can be achieved in India without spending much abroad, it will become a huge market

@poojakanchan I totally understand he is famous youtuber. Reality is, youtubers are hellucinated influencers with their very limited & biased perspective & their tendency to measure everything from objective sense, which is too dangerous for anyone who is new who wants to pursue international study & might get demotivated because of it. Forget about money, salary, growth perspective, multicultural experience, ease of living, the biggest advantage of internal study is exposure. You can always work in india since you are indian citizen for lifelong. But gaining a international is equally important in your working age to broaden the perspective & save yourself from myopic view. Few RU-vidrs which are basically unemployed people from their past right after their college who couldn't & didn't choose the career which doesn't suit them, started to spread negative views about it, & hence it's important to deinfluence such people by someone who actually gone through it.

Hello, thank you for the efforts in finding the relevant content topics and creating a segment. What I appreciate is you asking our feedback on the new format of the videos. And I have the following thought about it: This new format of video is not helpful. I first started following the thinkschool and subscribed to it because of the quality content it presented. By quality, I am specifically talking about the quality of content and not the storytelling. Thinkschool offered anl comprehensive understanding and thorough research regarding the relevant topics that the mainstream media failed to showcase. It was exceptionally educational, on the point and more importantly, presented us with all the facts to make an informed decision. However, since the past two videos (this current one and the BJP manifesto) it has severely degraded in quality. To highlight an example, the thinkschool videos were the equivalent of the ACN News show from the series "The Newsroom". No flair, no bias, only the utter facts in a manner which are easy to understand. The actual topic was comprehended easily. Because of this reason, thinkschool's subscriber base increased. However, in recent videos, you are deviating from your principles- or the idea from which it originated. It is sad. The work you are doing is wonderful, and it will help a lot more people if you stay faithful to the original idea. However, In recent videos, the only focus has been given largely to business. The title and the thumbnail are highly misleading as compared to the video contents. It has been repeatedly observed in your recent thumbnails. Kindly do not deviate from the faith, the idea on which it all Started. Your subscribers are intelligent, faithful and are here because you are offering something valuable. Currently, it seems like you are trying to ride many horses and atleast for me it is a downgrade in the quality. There is no fixed schedule, no proper differentiation of the contents- everything is uploaded from the same channel. Please stop! Your video about the EU energy bonus, about the farm laws, about the election subsidy was important and allowed an unbiased story. However, when compared with your recent video of BJP manifesto, it is a drastic downgrade. Your downgrade in quality is observed in your own statement in which you say that If time permits, you might make video on Congress manifesto. I am sure you appreciate the important position of responsibility that you hold. In this current elections, it is extremely important for the voters to be aware about the all sides of a story. And in such an environment - stating that you might do it if time permits - evidently highlights the need for you to recognise your "moat". Please correct the ship while time permits. I sincerely do not wish to see the thinkschool turn into another "quora" platform. I love your work and would like to see you continue doing the noble work of information. All the very best to all of us. Hopefully, we see you back soon.

Next year India will surpass Germany and Japan next two year, and in the next 25 years, India will generate a new $44 Trillion. So Who is going to get these opportunities? This video neatly explains the BUSINESS of Education. How Students/their Parents are the "Subscribers", and how Subscriptions are sold to them. Students who opt for a Foreign Education are aiming for MUCH More than Education. Not only is the acceptance rate far better, but Foreign institutes do not have Reservations or Minority Quotas. This makes it (more-or-less) an equal-opportunity game. This extends to the post-education Job market, where a foreign education is usually considered more valuable. Several foreign-education students don't even think of returning to India EVER. The Indian Education System, including the Higher Education Degree Colleges, has been steadily descending into utter Chaos. The Core Education, let alone the Quality, has deteriorated significantly. Hence, anyone hoping to build on "Soft Skills", usually considers looking beyond India.

But here are my concerns to stop/convert students going abroad are: > People go for the standard of living there. Even we offer them the same studies, job still the way of living here and there are way different. > People can work there while studying and being independent. They can do any type of work there without hesitation, but in India if a person can spend this much on study then their parents won't allow them to work while studying just for money. Some Ideas: > We can extend UPI like process for forex > A mock IELTS/TOFL exams in just under 5K to check initial proficiency of student and how much work they need to do on their English skills. Whether they need coaching or not. > A curated list of colleges, restaurants for students. As per I know, the colleges which are well advertised and the coaching centers have tie ups with are only tapped. > Freelancing to write the applications for colleges. > Freelancing to counsel, set the path for a student.
