As Israel and Ukraine struggle for survival, a newer “axis of ill will”-formed by Russia, China and Iran-sows discord around the globe. Stephen Kotkin, the Hoover Institution’s Kleinheinz Senior Fellow and a vaunted historian, joins Hoover senior fellows Niall Ferguson and John Cochrane to assess options abroad and parallels to the past (are we reliving the 1930s, the 1970s, or both?). The trio then dons their speechwriters’ hats to suggest how President Biden can capture the moral high ground. The trio then discusses how President Biden can capture the moral high ground when he makes public statements about the crisis and America’s response to it.
ABOUT THE SERIES
GoodFellows, a weekly Hoover Institution broadcast, features senior fellows John Cochrane, Niall Ferguson, and H.R. McMaster discussing the social, economic, and geostrategic ramifications of this changed world. They can’t banter over lunch these days, but they continue their spirited conversation online about what comes next, as we look forward to an end to the crisis.

Kotkin has some really good points. Sharp analysis and you can tell he has a greater depth and deductive thinking. He has thought about the logic and the facts in light of todays world players. Naill please let everyone else think; your just asking leading questions to support your already predetermined conclusions. Everyone respects Kotin because he explains his points of view with facts. He came with a legal page of receipts. Niall is comes off as a hawk with no receipts.

What America needs is a leader who has the credibility and the balls to stand up and say: "The whole world order that ultimately underpins the American way of life is under threat, and that America is prepared to do whatever it takes to defend it. That the longer America fails to stand up for it's core values of freedom and democracy, then the stronger the authoritarians will become, and the bigger the sacrifice needed to win the inevitable showdown will be".

Plastic fold up chairs in the middle of an empty room. You could present better than that! I also wish that they had allowed Dr Kotkin to finish instead of interrupting. Dr Kotkin seems to always start giving context which then leads to a conclusion & we often didn't get to that conclusion. Not that the input of the others is not valued but to me it was frustrating to listen to. If they need extra time to enable Dr Kotkin to respond in his style they should make the podcast longer.

It is pretty solid evidence Ferguson doesn't know shame. He's slinging a narrative that will sell well with Americans who don't like Biden, a valuable market, now way is Ferguson going to let Kotkin, reason, the truth, or intellectual honesty get between him and that paycheck.

All 3 of them are fascinating! We do not know what we do not know concerning the future - but very very few Americans have any understanding that isolationism does not work and is dangerous. The office of the president needs to educate America yesterday! Follow up talk would be great.

Here is a story with a moral: My aunt’s two kids were fighting. One was throwing rocks at the other. At this point he was not doing a lot of damage to his brother. My aunt scolded the rock throwing brother, telling him if he want to throw rocks, then throw them at targets and not people. She set up a target which he joyfully used for practice . The next time he got in a fight with his brother, his rock struck him directly in the face injuring him this time. The mother’s attempt at deterrence failed. What is the moral of the story? -. She did not deal with the negative antisocial passions of the rock throwing brother (jealousy, envy, hatred, revenge, etc.)
