Like the put of the prison dilemma is to show that rationally people should cooperate and keep their mouth shut. where C = cooperate and D = defect and if both prisoners C,C = 1yrs, 1yrs | C,D = 0 yrs, 5 yrs | D,C = 5 yrs, 0 yrs | D,D 3yrs, 3 yrs. In this chart A1 is the highest reward and B2 is the 2nd highest. The chart falls short for me because it is a success fail example. I think you're overcomplicating what the squares are saying. they are just describing outcomes, not the comparative reward from them. the player cannot control the opponents actions, so they only get to choose a row, the opponent chooses the column
