Undertale: Flowey on Saving Toriel after restarting your save file 

Flowey is one of those characters that makes you feel like your computer is haunted.

Holy cow. Flowey knows? The knowledge that the game is able to freak you out as a player fills me with determination to buy this game.

Conversely, if you spare Toriel and then redo that fight and kill her, Flowey calls you out on that and says you're repulsive.

I'm currently playing through Undertale for the first time. I want to go pure pacifist but when I got to the battle I accidentally killed Toriel (my logic was that I needed to weaken her to convince her, then accidentally dealt 300+ damage to her). Well once it was clear that I killed her I reset and battled again, figuring out how to win without killing her. ...Then *THIS* happened. I'd be lying if I said that this part didn't completely jar me. I have NEVER. EVER. played a game in which not even saving can, well, "save" you. I quickly did an internet search and concluded that this shouldn't mess up my pacifist run, thankfully. But now I've been playing through making every single decision with the utmost caution. Flowey KNOWS. I cannot escape my sins.

It was at that moment that I realised this game was something special.

A book once said that I could probably only name one or two flowers I was mad at right now. This is the one.

Not only that, but after resetting and previously choosing cinnamon, toriel was like, wait let me guess, is it cinnamon? WHAT

...this game is really fucking creepy sometimes. That's okay, though. I didn't need to sleep tonight or anything.

This is the sort of scary fucking self-awareness that I could really adore in a video game.

And I thought Resetti was bad.

I like how you take extra time to really let the "you murdered her" part sink in. That's right. You can't escape what you did.

I didnt know how to spare toriel so i killed her on my pacifist run. After awhile i felt so guilty that i killed her i just restarted. Imagine how scared i was when flowey said this to me

The fourth wall in this game doesn't exist. Of course, you should've known you were going to have a bad time.

When I convinced my best friend to start playing Undertale, we Skyped so I could watch. I tricked him into killing Toriel (acting like it was advice on sparing her gone wrong) and then resetting, just so he could trigger this. Part of the reason I did this was so he would be quickly introduced to Undertale's biggest draw: the fact that it remembers your saves and choices even when you "erase" them. After all, if you spare Toriel the first time, Flowey's erasing your saves at the end might feel a bit jarring without knowing already (like myself when I played the game). I'll be honest though, the REAL reason I tricked him was simply for the look on his face when Flowey told him he knew about Toriel. I payed for his copy of Undertale, and his reaction alone was worth the $10 dollars I spent.

I beat the game on true pacifist, did a true reset, and INSISTENTLY spammed spare on Toriel when I had 2 HP left. After enough "..."s and statements where she's obviously annoyed, I managed to spare her without killing her. Then this fucker shows up, says something along the lines of "You didn't kill anybody this time." COME THE FUCK ON FLOWEY, ARE YOUR MEMORIES RESET OR ARE YOU JUST INSISTENTLY FUCKING WITH ME FOR DODGING YOUR FRIENDSHIP PELLETS

Friendly reminder that by adding this in, Toby _KNEW_ that someone was going to kill Toriel, feel bad about it and soon regret it, and reset their save file to keep her alive! Is... is Toby a time-traveler or something?!

That pause... you can tell the player is losing his shit.

the game itself judge you, question you, and fuck with you in many ways, it even fuck with "us" the onces who are watching instead of doing it our selfs. its the first time I see a game that confront "the gamer"choices pointing out everything this is a game in which yOU HAVE NO CONTROL, YOU NEVER WHERE IN CONTROL

my first run of this game...i killed toriel without meaning to, quicky restarted the game and managed to not kill her, this damn sunflower rubs it in my face from how i killed her, tldl that flower is a dick.

This happened to me, at first I didn't understand what it was saying, about me murdering her, because I never hurt her the second time and I couldn't actually enjoy the chat. But as I was walking down undertale road with Sans following me, I literally stopped right there and went, "Those writers are such little shits. They thought of everything!"

I just realized, the whole thing about Flowey knowing about everything you do is a pun. The flower is stalking you. FLOWER. _STALK_.

If I told any of these gamers beforehand that a talking flower was going to make them feel guilty for accidentally killing a nanny goat, then reviving her, they'd give me their therapist's phone number. In this game, a statement like that is par for the course.

I just reset it 2 times and Flowey says the 3rd time of playing at first,"don't you have anything better to do?" then after you kill Toriel, he says,"How many times can you kill her?...you didn't even bother sparing her...you disgusting animal". welp

See this is one of the big things I love about this game. The ability to save your progress is simply there to let you stop what you're doing at certain points and come back to it later, or to be used as a sort of checkpoint. It's one of the most basic of game mechanics that pretty much every game had after the 16-bit era. This game makes that a super-power. *Your* super power. *SPOILERS* And a super power that can be taken from you-the biggest case in point being the fight against Omega Flowey and how he literally tries to fuck your movements up using *save states* and also using them to kill you over and over for shits and giggles in the last part.

Wait...your save file getting fucked is a mechanic in the game?! Ok. Nobody dies in Undertale. Except that fucking flower. Yep. Who does that flower think he is? Resetti or some shit? >: (

I did this on accident. I killed Toriel, thinking that weakening her would let me go, but I did 300+ damage... I reset my game, then played through it, but I spared her. Flowey knows, and I cant sleep because of it.

I love how after he turns creepy and laughs he just casually turns back into a cute, smiley flower and goes back into the ground XD

Yup. That's exactly what happened to me, and I was just short of balling my eyes out. Here I am, trying to play by the game's rules and follow the advice the beginning froggit gives (if you can lower a monster's hp enough, they can be spared) when I kill Toriel with the critical strike. Toriel's face when she's dying, Flowy calling me a murderer, knowing the game has a specific ending if you don't kill anyone, it all combines for me to reach for the Esc key without even realizing. Next thing you know, I feel like even more of an ass once the game hints that I could've selected Mercy and everything would've been fine. I save Toriel, walk out feeling slightly better, only to get hit by this Flowey speech like a truck. One of the most personal, meta experiences I've ever felt from a game. When I first got Undertale, I was pretty skeptical of all the hype everyone kept giving the game. I watched the trailer and wasn't super impressed, but still decided on a whim to give the game a shot. After going through everything above, it became the tipping point for me becoming absolutely blown away and addicted to the game. It amazes me that this scene is just the tip of the iceburg of all the game's madness, too @_@

I really hate that Toriel has become a target a little too often because of this fucking mistake. I felt horrible when I killed her. The feeling won't ever leave me as long as I love this game.

I actually did this on my first run, and holy shit was I enticed since right after that sequence you walk through the door and then BOOM, title screen. God damn.

At this time, I deleted the save file from my AppData, to make Flowey forget, and restarted ... but I can't delete my memories ... I ... killed her ... I am so sorry, Toriel

I played the Undertale Demo to see if I if the game was worth buying. When I had THIS happen to me after accidentally killing Toriel, I knew then and there that this would be a game that no gamer can pass up.

I think this is the reason why Toriel's fight is designed so that it's very likely you'll kill her the first time around.

I think this was how Undertale was meant to be experienced. I know for me at least, this dialogue changed my whole experience.

I was fucking blown away when I got this. Killed Toriel because I thought there was no other way, then saw you could spare her. Then I got greeted to this mind fuck. Good shit.

See, this is one of the main reasons I love this game. It remembers everything you do and everything you say, even if you “erase” it by going back to your old SAVE file. It’s bound to freak out anyone who’s unaware of that. Undertale remembers.

I love how flowey's face comes outside his outline and grows larger and u just hear a high pitched laugh, I always find that funny

If I was frisk I would pluck that little annoying flower from the ground and smush it right here and now.

I fucking love Flowey.

I myself accidentally killed Toriel then once I got to Snowdin, I killed myself to save her. When I did, and when I fought Toriel again, I used the “Talk” option but then the game told me that, “it’s best not to talk about how you killed her earlier” so instead I, “had a look in my face as if I’ve seen a ghost” and Toriel asked me if I knew something she didn’t. So....yeah.

This blew my mind when I did this.

It's amazing. In ~30 minutes, this game establishes two amazing characters, one who is a believable motherly figure who is astoundingly effective, and another who you don't want to just send to hell, but laugh as he burns there. And it still has time in between to introduce its backstory and mechanics.

I can't believe that a freakin' FLOWER of all things could make me feel so guilty and freaked out. Well played, Toby Fox. Well played. I'm gonna go cry in a corner now.

still remember getting this scene on my first playthrough. this was the moment the game had me hooked

this game knows when you load, save, and quit while it also can delete your save file, crash the game while altering it, and even literally speaks to you

I think it's awesome how what you do in one playthrough has an effect on subsequent ones even after a supposed "reset"

Your description was my experience exactly OP. Went into it knowing nothing about the game. Halfway through I read about how you can save characters, didn't realize that, so I restarted it to give it a try. When this happened, my mind was blown.

I was absolutely stunned when this happened. I'm near the end of my first run (playing Pacifist) and ever since I got this scene, I have tried to be as respectful to the characters I meet as possible.

Whenever he does that ghoulish face and taunt you, I imagine him having the voice of Vincent Price.

This exact thing happened to me the first time, and I thought it was such a great, organic moment, being able to screw with the player's head like that.

I could barely sleep last night after taking so many undertale pictures and watching gameplay videos. In my head Flowey kept saying over and over again, ' In this world, it's kill or be killed'

This is honestly one of the features that makes undertale such a fantastic game. I love it, but it's still very unsettling haha

Never have I played a game in my life where even kicking a snowball counted to the full front of the game. This game is terrifying and a good example of a constant mindfuck. I even accidentally killed a snowdrake and restarted because I wanted the true ending... only to notice that Sans and Papyrus saying that we've "done this before". I was confused to no end. XD Now.... ............. That being said................ HOW DARE YOU KILL MAMA TORIEL!!!

I did the same thing... I had done no prior research about flowey I just knew that people thought he was cool... so when this happened I was already crying about thinking of my toriel killing sin and then he has to rub it in and I just started sobbing... who knew and 8-bit game could cause THIS MUCH FEELS!!!!

0:23 Even without commentary, I can just hear the reaction as I had the same one. I legit did not mean to get rid of Toriel in my first run so I decided to restart the whole game because she seemed like a wholesome character, but when I got to this section, I legit got goosebumps while my mouth dropped open. I beat this game about half a year ago as it’s was free on XBox Game Pass (I think it still is currently too), & this game knows how to play mind games with you heavily. To the creator of this game, hats off to you because this still remains one of my personal favorite games I’ve ever played.

Never happened to me, my first run was a blind one. I knew almost nothing except that one playthrough in this game, will not be enough. After killing Toriel, i just went ahead, spared everyone else, almost killed papyrus, but he survived, killed undine, spared asgore (the part when he said we can live together like a family with Toriel was really brutal, since i realized why he looked quite familiar) then defeated omega flowey. In the end i was love 9 i think. The explanation how EXP and LOVE works was my third real criticall hit in the feels, first was killing undine and second was that talk in the restaraunt with Sans, when he tells that "funny" story. The second run was pacifist true happy ending, but there is still that one thing missing...

This shows that Flowey's knowledge is beyond limits. Not only this, even when you delete files 0 and 9, Flowey *KNOWS* you deleted them.

Small details like this is what made this game so spectacular. That outside the box thinking to really get inside people's heads. Pure genius.

First time I found that out, I freaked out and threw my laptop on the bed. Scary tbh 😥

I did this by accident and since Toriel asked me if I knew something she didn't I began to think it was suspicious. Then this epic shit came out.

It was an accident Flowey.. I underestimated the power of my Determination

The community and fanbase may be a bunch of cringe, but the game is simply clever. I love how every character in the game is aware on some level of everything you've done before you reset, like they already lived it in a dream, or in an alternate universe.

What if you kill toriel twice.

I still love flowey, he is just so cute, even if he is a tiny murderous flower that haunts peoples' dreams and tortures their friends and such. so cute. with his tiny flower face and thyme song and the little beeps for his talking... anyone else agree? I hope im not alone on this, he is evil but very cute, kind of a win-lose situation... so kawaii!

Lol I haven’t played this game for years and it’s still good to see there are hidden gems such as this that I have just started to discover lol. I just started playing again recently.

I did the same thing as many people, try to weaken Toriel and then accidentally killed her. And then I reset. I actually got chills when I read this. Accountability for your actions isn't something that generally happens, and it messed with me. Really unique in the game, and kudos to Toby Fox and the team for putting in such an amazing and powerful feature of the game.

OKAY THIS GAME IS REALLY SMART O.O
