Underwater Dolphins - Increasing Rate

When working on your underwater dolphins, experimenting with rate may be the big change you've been looking for.
Why do it:
You can't work on your underwater dolphins enough, but only working on how many you take off each wall may limit your ability to really find that perfect underwater. Experimenting with how quickly you take your kicks can also make big changes.
How to do it:
1 - We use a Tempo Trainer to determine the regular rate of the swimmer, matching the rate to the swimmer.
2 - Next we start to increase the rate of the Tempo Trainer, making the swimmer match the rate of the beep to each dolphin kick. By increasing the rate, we will also reduce the amplitude, or wave size of each kick. This can also help to reduce resistance introduced by younger swimmers who are just trying to create BIG kicks.
3 - Time yourself to a mark on the bottom of the pool to see just what mix of kick rate, or size of kick, and number of kicks gets you to that spot the quickest.
How to do it really well (the fine points):
To add to this challenge, once you get to a rate that gets you to that mark the quickest, put on a pair of fins. Match the new rate with the fins. The increased surface area of the fins will make it more difficult to match that rate. It will either require more power, or again, experimenting with reducing the size of the kick to match the rate. This searching, and ability to adapt by the swimmer, will continue, or introduce subtle variations athletes will need to learn to maximize their performance.
When adding resistance at high speeds, as we're adding fins, be careful to focus this "fine point" on more mature and physically ready athletes. These intense parts of drills are not intended for athletes that are too young, or too old. They are, however, sometimes a necessary part of training high level athletes. Use common sense and if you're the athlete, listen to your body to protect against any potential injury. If it hurts in a bad way, stop doing it.

The best part of that video is that it encourages to experiment with the rate and amplitude. Quite often the lack of the experimentation is the worst enemy of those who would like to swim more efficient. Thank you.

does anyone feel the same way, as when you were doing the dolphin stroke, if you put your hands forward, no matter how hard you try, your body just don't go forward, but if you put your hands on your side, then it works? any advice on that?

@leomdk939
@leomdk939 6 лет назад
You are likely holding your head too high when you extend your arms forward for streamline. Your biceps should be behind your ears, not on top of them or in front of them. Having a head position that is too high will lock your shoulders/chest into an inflexible position and will stifle your core, which is necessary to power the kick. This is why you can dolphin better with your arms at your sides - your shoulders are completely relaxed. To correct this, first try lowering your head position so your biceps are behind your ears and see if that helps. If not, try relaxing the extension of your arms by about 1". This will be slightly less streamlined, but your flexibility should improve further. Also, you should do some regular stretching exercises to improve the flexibility in your shoulders. This should be gentle and will takes weeks/months. You should follow instructional videos on how to safely stretch for increased flexibility. Do not be forceful or impatient with stretching as you can hurt yourself badly. *The power from the dolphin generates from the core* , but tight/locked shoulders will stifle the core's efforts. As your flexibility increases, you can try extending that streamline further forward again. Remember that a longer streamline is only beneficial if you can relax and be flexible. (You can see what I mean about head position right now -- try streamlining your arms towards the ceiling and experiment with your head position. Notice that your shoulders/chest become rigid if your head is too far back. When you bring your head forward, it should become more flexible. The shoulders/chest don't need to move much - a small amount is plenty. Also - when you dolphin, the upper body movement is just a by-product of your core's movement. Don't focus on moving your shoulders -- just put them in a position that allows them to move because your core is moving.) Follow the skeleton to see how it works: wrong head position locks the shoulders, which locks the chest, which stifles the core, which makes the hips weak. If the hips are weak in a dolphin kick, you can forget about everything below them. :) EDIT: one more thing - in a streamline, let your arms move up/down *slightly* as you dolphin. People will tell you to "keep them still", but that's relative to the rest of your body. Almost every great swimmer moves their arms up/down a few inches while they are dolphining. When I learned this, it was the difference between going halfway across the 25m pool underwater to being able to go all the way across the 25 pool underwater. It literally doubled my dolphin abilities, just by letting my arms move up/down slightly. As you experiment with these things, just remember - good swimming (and stretching) never hurts - if it hurts, do it differently.

If I wanted to do 5x25m underwaters at a 1:30 interval (meaning, start the 25m underwater swim, touch the wall, 45 degree surface swim back to the start line. That’s 1. When the clock says 1:30, you go again. This is for a total of 5.) if I wanted to do this, should I swim the underwater in the form of dolphin? Would that tire me out faster? I’m trying to figure out how to swim the underwater faster so that I can active recover on the surface swim back to allow for decent recovery before having to go again so quickly.
