🟥SUBJECT: Underway vs Making way
Are they the same or there is a difference? Let’s find out.
This topic is very easy for college students. Underway & Making way are not the same. Period.
So, what is the difference between a vessel that is underway and one that is making way?
✅As per Colreg Rule 3, The word “underway” means a vessel is not at anchor, made fast to the shore, or aground” That’s it.
✅If “making way”, this means you have STW
(Speed through the water) or headway
⚠The COLREGS do not provide a definition for a ship making way. It is assumed that it is straightforward to understand when a ship is making way through the water. This is where confusion to some people comes in but let's see if we can understand the difference between these two situations.
🔹Situation 1: A vessel was at anchor and has just picked up its anchor.
Answer: These are clear. In situation 1, the vessel is underway. (Underway but not making way)
***you just picked-up your anchor hence you are “underway” as per colregs but not enough to have STW to be “making way”.
🔹Situation 2: A vessel is moving in the open sea & has STW of 7kts.
Answer: The vessel is making way. (Underway & making way)
🔹Situation 3: A vessel is approaching a port and stops its engine but is still moving at a speed of 8 knots because of momentum
Answer: In situation 3, the vessel still has speed through the water. As long as the vessel can alter its course with the rudder, it is making way (Underway & making way)
However, when the vessel's speed drops below the point where the rudder is effective and the ship cannot alter its course or no STW, it would be (underway but not making way) through the water.
🔹Situation 4: A vessel is moving upriver at 5 knots but with
a 5-knot current against it.. Thus, the GPS speed shows zero.
Answer: In situation 4, the vessel's speed over ground is zero, but it is still moving with respect to the water. Therefore, the vessel is “underway but not making way”.
If a surveyor interviews you, what is the difference between
a ship that is “underway but not making way” & a ship
“underway & making way”?
You can tell them, STW. Do not get tricked by the surveyor when he says is it by sidelights or masthead lights? No.
***You just answer STW
