In this segment, Sharon Waugh talks about her quest to become a living kidney donor. First tested to be a living donor match for her husband Sharon, we was deeply disappointed when her husband's medical emergency and antibodies from a blood transfusion, changed Bill's blood type and Sharon, along with 4 other donor matches, were no longer eligible to donate a kidney to Bill.
The silver lining in the story is that a close friend of the family, who had the same blood type, tested to be a donor for Bill and was found to be a match. Bill received the gift of life from his good friend and Kidney Hero.
Sharon remained committed to being a living donor even though she was no longer a match for her husband Bill. Once Bill had fully recovered from his post transplant surgery, Sharon became an altruistic donor, donating her kidney to a kidney patient in need of a transplant. Truly and act of heroism.
The common message they share is a passionate one about the importance of organ donation registration. It only takes 2 minutes to register your wishes and save a life one day.
