Supposedly, Tommy, Ariya has capacitive-touch steering wheel, so that no “torque input” is necessary for Pro Pilot to know your hands are on the wheel. Did you read up on that before road testing?

I looked at the Ariya and the Ionic 5 and chose the Ariya because I loved the interior and how quiet it was. To me it was more fun to drive than the Ionic 5 as well. When I bought it, I got a $3750 rebate through Nissan Finance with a 2.99% 3 year loan which I can pay off as soon as I want. So it felt like a good deal at that price. Hopefully Nissan will bring production to the U.S. to get the ta rebate at some point. If it helps, my use case is in-town commuting. We drive my wife's larger 3-row any time we travel.

The changing tax incentives have made this market segment very interesting. I’m not sure it’ll last, but for now, it’s the Wild West in terms of range/performance/price. I love the way the Ariya looks inside and out, but you’re right: at $62k that’s a tough pill to swallow. Excellent thorough review! Love seeing this in depth information on the current crop of mainstream EVs.

Not sure what issue you were having with the steering wheel but I've used the ProPilot on my Ariya Premiere practically every day since I got the car 3 months ago and never had any issue with it sensing my hand on the wheel or had to use much force. Usually it's enough for me to keep one hand resting on the bottom of the wheel around the 5 or 7 o'clock position. I think ProPilot 2.0 works great except for the fact that there seem to be too many gaps in coverage for the HD map data so it's stuck in ProPilot 1 level assist most of the time instead of the full suite.

I think the wheel doesn't need torque and has sensors to sense hands on the wheel. Just holding the wheel with enough flesh touching should be fine so wiggling the wheel isn't doing anything.

Interesting video, as usual, However, I notice that the audio varied in its loudness in the different sections of the video; initially not very loud, then loud, then not loud again. While it’s not Loveland Pass, we just drove our Ioniq5 (AWD) from Montrose to Telluride/Mountain Village and back (148 miles) and averaged 4.5 miles per kWh. Overall the slower speeds on mountain roads seem to offset the higher energy use when hill climbing. At least compared to driving at Interstate highway speeds.

At the end of December 2023 there are on the USA used car market very cheap front wheel drive versions of long range Nisaan Ariya priced under 40000 USD with plentry of features almost brand new with less than 2000 miles as total drven pre-own mileage. Those are very good offers. The range is rated as 304 miles by EPA. I wish some RU-vid channels would range test the long range version at 70 mph.

Tommy, I am so glad that you have a channel that pays attention to EV’s, because when I had a deposit down on the Model 3 since the first day of it’s introduction, it seemed that your channel was negative about electric vehicles. You just ignored them. Don’t get me wrong, I want combustion engines to be around forever for weekend fun and for when they make sense for hauling and for range. Charging: 63.3655 kW in 34 min = avg charging rate of 111.7 kW/hr for the 7->80% SOC session. Must have a pretty flat charging curve since 127 was the fastest charge rate early on. Very nice. 3.4 miles / kW seems like decent efficiency for the very tall Ariya driving in the mountains. Usually hill work gives worse efficiency than flat highway driving so 3.4 also seems quite good. Thank you for the look at performance of the Ariya Tommy and Alex!!

@TFLEV: The steering wheel is CAPACITIVE. You don't have to give ANY torque. You literally have to touch it and that's it. Not sure what went on there, but this is not normal. I do remember Nissan had a bad batch of steering wheels delivered by one of their suppliers. My guess would be, that the wheel in this car indeed was defective. Those warnings actually are very good indeed, the car will even stop and turn the hazards and E-Brake on if you don't react. People do dose off behind the wheel, it happens all the time, so the car better has contigencies for that. But again, I tried the Ariya and all I had to do was let my hand rest at the bottom of that wheel, no force applied whatsover. And that's exactly how it works on the current X-Trail and Qashqai models as well (Rogue and Rogue Sport for you guys over there).

To all the armchair reviewers - take that car out for a week, see what it can do (way more than the typical RU-vid reviewer will tell you) and you will understand, why this is expensive. 50 or so years ago when Japanese cars became popular, the US Government coerced Japan into building in the US using US labor, so now you see most Japanese companies building cars here for the US market, while no US car company build cars in Japan. Other countries followed suit. EVs are still relatively new (fewer then gas cars) and it takes time to move manufacturing overseas. We need to realize that production moved overseas means job cuts in their home country, so I feel that although the $7500 tax credit was great for US car companies, non-US car companies will need to work harder.

@EliotHochberg
@EliotHochberg Год назад
So I think it’s worth trying to figure out how that cost compares to a gas vehicle, if you have some kind of Honda Civic that gets 50 miles to the gallon, then the cost per mile is about the same. Although with an electric vehicle, you don’t have a lot of the other costs that a gas vehicle might have. But purely on fuel it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of $.10-$.11 a mile if you see a five dollar per gallon cost. Of course, if gas is cheaper, then that same car will do better than this EV. However, the vast majority of gasoline vehicles are closer to the 30 to 35 miles per gallon range. As a result, those vehicles are gonna cost about 50% more per mile. So I figure $.20 a mile for a 37 mile per gallon gas vehicle. so now, the cost for electricity at a charging station is going to save you quite a bit. Not to mention, for regular use between home and work and errands, cost significantly less than that.

Same, but the big thing keeping me from buying one is the lack of One-Pedal Driving. It's not OPD unless it takes you to a complete stop. Everything else is just strong regen (and I wish Tommy wouldn't call it OPD).

I purchased the Ariya 2 weeks ago in Vancouver Canada and the e-step is pretty close to 1 pedal driving from my experience. The Auto brake when you stop is good also. Ps. I absolutely love driving the vehicle...it's quiet because they used acoustic glass( Multi layer) so it's like being in an extremely expensive vehicle.

194 miles for almost $24+?? That's actually worse than my ICE vehicle. I get 36mpg on the highway. At the current prices of mid to high $3 range. It would cost about $19 to go 193 miles.

Not a big deal if no one was waiting, but then you never know who might pull up after you plug in. This is the kind of etiquette thing people are just going to have to learn as we go. So unfortunate that only Tesla makes an affordable long range with any semblance of luxury. Bolt is cheap, but feels cheap. Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Ford, all need to reduce the cost of their options to tesla pricing. You can get a long range Model 3 for $47k or performance for $53k. Then subtract the tax credit, which is not a true cash on hood reduction, but still better than all the other options besides ford which only qualifies for half. VW is the only "foreign" badge that qualifies for the tax credit. Sorry, not buying a nissan or hyundai or kia unless they drop the price to account for the tax credit. EV6 GT which is the only thing in this segment that can compare to a model 3 performance is $10k more and has no tax credit. Interior is so much better than tesla though but $10k is a lot for an interior that has cheap plastics that scuff by looking at them. ID4 is actually the one I am looking at currently. It was the ioniq, but unless they wheel and deal down from MSRP by $5000 I am not buying. So it is VW vs Model 3 for me. I absolutely despise the model 3 single tablet setup. Not sure why they couldnt give it either a HUD or the small driver screen that the Model S has, but seems stupid to put driver info off to the side. I was testing it in my normal car and constantly looking to center of car was annoying.
