#thelifeandsadending #barneymiller #sitcom A mini bio on the life and career of actor and Singer Jack Soo. He is most famous for appearing on the "Barney Miller" TV show.
I remember the night on Barney Miller ,after the episode, they had a tribute to Jack, saying he had died. Was a sad night, he was awesome on the show. Loved his terrible coffee.
I used to watch Barney Miller when I was a kid.Jack Soo was great. My favorite episode was when his character Nick Yemana kept chowing down on brownies. He didn't know they were laced with hashish. He sung like he was drunk.
When I finished high school in 1967 -- and before I enlisted in the Navy in 1968 -- I was a delivery boy for a local chicken franchise. My favorite customer was Jack Soo. He always gave me a $5.00 tip (big in those days). So whenever I saw his ticket come up, I'd grab it and make sure he and his family got their order piping hot and first. Nice, generous man, who always had a smile for me -- and that wonderful tip! 😎
Jack Soo was the reason I started watching "Barney Miller". The episode featured a man locked up in one of the jail cells. He kept insisting that, after midnight, he was going to transform into a wolf. After the guy said this, Jack is seen calmly walking to the guy's cell with the keys--apparently about to open it. Barney screams, "Nick!! What are you doing??" and Jack calmly says, "I'm gonna put some paper down." I was hooked from then on.
My first episode was when he put a coffee pot under a roof leak. During a rain, he captured water. Someone tells him he's catching dirty water. Look at the mold on the ceiling. Soo replies, I thought that was just a pattern.
When I think of "Barney Miller" sitcom, Jack Soo automatically comes to mind. All of the "Barney Miller," cast were exceptional actors...but "Nick" stole the show everytime! 🙏 RIP JACK SOO 🙏
Barney Miller was my favorite shows growing up! I could not wait to come home from school to watch it. They all were so funny, but Jack Soo had some of the best one liners! He is a wonderful talent that is missed! RIP Jack🙏🕊💐🕊🙏
Oh, I remember watching him on Barney Miller when I was a kid. What a rich, complex, and challenging life he led before Barney Miller. Thank you so much for all of your research, I am glad to know more about this talented man. ❤
Such a very good and likeable actor. Like someone else here said, he stole every scene he was in. Died so young....so sad. I really enjoy your coverage of actors...concise and always interesting, never too long! Thank you again!
I loved his character in everything he played. He was wonderful. Sad that smoking was part of what shorter his life. At least we have him.on films and shows and he will last forever. Thank you, Jack. 👍🙏🙏 gir all the joy you gave if yourself for everyone to enjoy. 🙏 🫂
One of the reasons my dad watched the show was because of Jack Soo reading the racing form. My uncles were in the same unit, 442nd RCT. His dry delivery was incredible.
It is awesome we can still watch Barney Miller every evening if we choose. Love it when I see him on the TV Shows you mentioned. . 👍⭐️💕. My mother in law😇 was Japanese she met my father-in-law 😇during the Korean war when he was stationed over there.👋🐊
I remember him from Valentines Day, mid- 60's. He played the part very well, dispelling the Asian stereotype many viewers expected from before and during WWII. His deadpan delivery was fantastic. Narragansett Bay.
Wow, I was just watching and talking to my wife about Jack Soo while watching Barney Miller on you tube last night. I was in the other room on a different computer and this one must have heard me and your episode popped up on this computer! He was so funny because he looked so serious all the time. The division he was in saw some of the most intense action in WW2. Thanks for making this episode Steve.
His appearance in mash was The funniest thing comma He did so much In such a short time Comma Five minutes on screen question mark And of course the Wonder of Detective Nick Yemana on Bernie Miller. 😃
Jack Soo was also in a hilarious, but short lived 'sit-com', ca. 1967, (can't remember its name) with Tony Franciosa! Jack played a wise cracking "house-boy" to Tony's womenizing "playboy' image! The show was different because Jack was never subservient to Tony & in one episode, he was Tony's "Captain" , when they went to Army Reserve training! He & actors like James Hong, "broke the mold" for Asian actors getting non-traditional roles! R.I.P. Jack!
Wait a minute. Jack Soo, along with other Japanese Americans were interned (imprisoned) because Japanese Americans were considered a threat to the US during WW2, but Soo was able to leave internment to enlist in the US Army? Make it make sense. Soo was a great addition to the ensemble cast of Barney Miller. Each actor brought something different to their role. Great writing and casting make all the difference. It's so sad to learn how many lives were lost due to cigarette smoking. R.I.P.
I'm not saying I agree with it but when FDR did the internment it was legal. How do you think Japan, Korea, China, Thailand, etc. would treat Americans in their countries if they were at war with America?? Probably much worse!
