I interviewed last week and my local and was asked why I wanted to be a plumber and I told them that I have been married for 12 years and lay pipe a few times a week consistently for that 12 years and she's always satisfied so I think I'm ready for the union. They told me to exit the room the same door I entered. I assume I'm not getting the apprenticeship
Nice video. Just that a person can’t just go an apply or get into an apprenticeship in any local like AZ Because if they don’t live there .. out of state DL,
great video Vernon! this is to Vernon or anyone whos sees it - I'm a 22 year old in Connecticut. I'm a plumbing apprentice with a year of schooling done and 3500/8000 hours done for my apprenticeship.(need 8000 hours for license in CT) I recently left a small firm because I'm beyond tired of getting stuck with old guys who rip people off, don't have any ambition, and well to say the least, have a lot of other bad problems... I did carpentry before this and it was the same so feel like that shows I'm not just complaining or being a you know what... but after years it really started to affect my mental health badly and I don't want to become a drunk like my old master plumbers... is union the next/best move for me or do I just give up and quit the trades... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thank you
That’s what I’m worried about as well. I’m not planning to work with people who drink, smoke, or just live a miserable life. I would like to work with the happy and the fortunate instead.
I'm 21 and I'm starting a welding job at $19/hr soon. Should I work here for a bit and save up to buy a more reliable car or should I just join my local?
You need to get you a vehicle man, get into the union as soon as possible ! Sign up to a local union near your before December 31st, that’s usually the cutoff for the next year apprenticeship class, they will call you for a math test in February and if you pass an interview in April.
Do you know anything about Local 28 in Queens NYC ? I applied the other day and before I applied they said it would be a lottery pick process. Would you happen to know how that works ?
Hello I’m a currently 20 years old also a minority and I am a Union Millwright apprentice we build turbines and work in industrial maintenance, welding bridges and rigging and steel erection we mainly work in plants , refineries , and steel mills I wouldn’t trade it for the world but I wanted to be a pipe fitter but it didn’t work the only advise I have is don’t stop searching call everywhere !!!
Good advice, I’m 20 too and I’m an Ironworker. I took a fitter test a couple weeks ago I’m waiting for my results and I’m taking the ibew test my 2nd time in a few months. I wanted to be an electrician at first
I’m about to get my degree in welding . I would like to get into the pipe tig welding walking the cup. How much do you get paid as an apprentice for the first year ? And does the salary increase as the years go by ?
Yes through the UA depending on your area look it up the local united assosciation and you can apply, it will show you all the wages 1-5 year and jounrmeyman salriesy
I know this is an old video, but hopefully you see this, I just got accepted into local 72 in Atlanta, GA after working as a welder/fitter for 3 years in private sector. Do you know anything about 72? I’m hoping it’s a solid one to get into.
If the apprenticeship pays 26 a hour can I live off that and quit my job … I just bought a car and I just turned 20 so insurance ain’t cheap I wanna make sure if I start the apprenticeship I would have enough for my bills
The apprenticeship I had several layoffs but it was worth it in the end, 1st year topped put I made more than I did during apprenticeship in one year. Vogtle was a good job $34.87/Hr + $110/day per diem. I worked 2,976 Hours, a lot of Sundays . Double time was great on Sundays worth about $450-500
DONT DO IT , you are better off applying to LOCAL 189 COLUMBUS OHIO. They have more work and will be getting INTEL, you will want to be a LOCAL when work starts going so you can become a foreman in what will be your own local.
@@vernonscott1834 thank you a ton for the heads up! Do you know anything at all about the plumbers union in Cleveland? I was also thinking about applying to that, I wouldn’t be able to relocate to Columbus for another year.
If you join a local it is a 5 year apprenticeship program so you will be expected to stay there and work local jobs, that’s why I am saying you would be better off going to Columbus cause they have a lot of work now and coming up so you will have the opportunity to get all your hours, learn the most of different skilled trades Orbital Welding , Hand Detailing , High Purity, Combination Welding , Pipefitting & Plumbing , meet a lot of traveling construction workers cause they will be coming to OHIO to work at INTEL, and then when you finish the program ( top out as a journeyman ) you will be able to use the connections you made to find the highest paying jobs .
Once you top out and finish you will be traveling unless you are in a clique or have a local with a lot of revolving / maintenance / new install work like Arizona , Oregon, Idaho , Austin TX & soon to be Ohio once they build the new Intel Chip Fab.
Hey, I have a few questions. I passed the math exam a while back, and just did the interview yesterday, I feel like it went really well. I’m kind of confused on what happens next? Do you think you can help me with that? Btw I have experience in HVAC and pipe fitting.
After the interview , at my union anyway, they send you a letter and let you know if you got selected or not. Then you get your orientation date, and all the guys that got selected go in and do their orientation.
@@TheMrFlyBoy18 Not typically. There are cases where we are in a position that we need to be at certain heights, mostly during rigging where we use a crane to lift equipment to us and we need to be high up to control the equipment over high structures. I haven't been on a job where actual pipe fitting required us to be at extreme heights. Pipe fitters do exactly as the name suggests. We work with pipes and attach fittings to them, either by threaded fittings or by welding them onto the pipe. The difference between pipefitters and plumbers, is that pipe fitters work with small to very large pipes, and the pipes we work with can be attached to various equipment and they usually carry some kind of chemical or petrol product. We do work with large utilities like Water Departments as well.
Hey bro thanks for info! I’m currently 23 working for a small Plumbing company making about 21$ after 3 years of experience should I move to Union as a plumber ?😅
I'm waiting for the apprenticeship entrance exam for my near ua local I'm interested in becoming a pipefitter steam fitter because of the bigger pipe but my worry is I'm pretty blind and wear glasses and I don't want to mess up my vision is welding mandatory if it is I'll just become a plumber?
Depending on the Local Union both plumbers and pipefitters weld, welding is not mandatory but it is a skill you should learn even if you only learn orbital welding for specialty work ( high purity ) Pharmaceutical / Semiconductor industry is booming right not and usually high purity pharmaceutical is shut down work so it pays pretty good 6 or 7-12s plus some companies like Kinetics & DSI pay per diem.
If you want to just become a Pipefitter though you can do that man, their is nothing wrong with that choice. I will say this, if you are blessed to be in a combined local get everything you can Medical gas Cert, Plumbing License , UA Star Certification , OSHA 30, Universal CFC, learn all you can on the job too commercial & industrial. Show up everyday on time like you want to be a small business owner and you will succeed!
Go to local 602 in capitol heights sign up your name then call local contractors under the 602 union and ask for open positions , be persistent don’t give up , apply for school this coming up November
if you are a minority it has become slightly easier than in times past, it would be best if you knew someone in the union or do really well in the interview process, wear a suit , speak eloquently , state that you have an innate desire to become a Pipefitter and travel and make money and you want the BEST training.
That is a strong local, hard to get into . They have Microsoft and the convention center going on right now. If you can join it I would do it but, in a all honesty you would be better off getting into local 290 doing your 5 years there cause that’s most likely the local you will be working in anyway once you finish your apprenticeship . They are always hiring at Intel / ADI & Microchip!
If you are single or have a strong support system go to school 4 nights a week, and the weekend and practice welding. 16 hours a week you can get, if your tray dedicated you can practice for an hour before classes start. UA-21 then UA-22 then UA-41 then UA-63 Make sure you apply for both apprentice licenses. Ask to be switched to the Tuesday / Thursday classes and go on Monday / Wednesday to the Journeyman welding classes. Hopefully you get with a company like Denver-Elek or Spears mechanical , you will learn a lot working for them.
