The Big Chute Marine Railway is the ONLY one of its kind in North America still in use.
Officially known as Lock 44 of the Trent-Severn Waterway, it works on an inclined plane to carry up to 100 foot boats up (or down) the 60 foot change in elevation.

Hepburn Engineering Inc. in Etobicoke designed and built the railway. www.hepeng.com/

That is wonderful. Just goes to show that there are still things to learn about man made things on this planet of ours.

Thanks, I've seen pics of this before but never in action! That larger boat that's last off at 11:00 is a long way from home!

Jay, now that is neat.Thank you for sharing. I had no idea we had one in the Northern Hemisphere . This is what makes You-Tube so neat. Very clever solution. Going into favorites. Have you heard of the beast of Siberia ? The Krasnoyarsk Dam boat lift.

"Still In Use",.. This sure beats locks, and is faster, don't know if is cheaper though. If there were others like this, why would they be allowed to go out of service? Definitely seems like a great way to do it though.

Way cool! I think they should give the boaters a discount if they're willing to speed things up by unhooking the cable to just coast down to the lower level. But fasten your seat belts!

It's kind of like how cars and people use ferries to get across bodies of water but boats use a giant train to get across land. :P

It took me bit of time to realise how it keeps level Inner an outer tracks are unequal Clever idea save all manner of moving parts. An hydraulics.
@JayJr2007

Yeah its pretty cool stuff to see in action. Once in a while a real large boat will use it & make the lift look small. lol

Such an eloquent design. Engineers are sure smart.
@TheGryxter
@TheGryxter 6 лет назад
That makes sense, but how does it work going the other way? The outer tracks would have to be higher on one end. Then the rails would be in the way of the lower legs. I'm confused as to how it works in 2 directions.
@Vincent-Vega24
@Vincent-Vega24 6 лет назад
I didn't even realize that until I read your comment!!!!! Nice!!
@bigredc222
@bigredc222 6 лет назад
thegrxter On one side the outer track is the high one, and the inner is the lower one, on the other end, the outer track is the lower, and the inner track is the upper one, all four legs on the carrier thing, are the same length.

any one know what the fee's are for using this service?
@peggyt1243
@peggyt1243 6 лет назад
There is no specific fee for using the marine railway. You pay by the day not by the lock. You buy a pass for the Trent Canal system a specific number of days or for the whole season if you want.

Great catch, love the Jet-ski getting a ride all by it self! The Trent-Severn Waterway is fascinating but not that well known, and is definitely on my bucket list of boating destinations! Check out the Wki page for more info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trent%E2%80%93Severn_Waterway
