Starting garlic sprouts in water and then transferring them to soil containers can give the garlic a head start on growth. This method is straightforward and a great way to grow garlic greens or even develop full garlic bulbs over time. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Sprouting Garlic in Water
• Choose Garlic Cloves: Use fresh, plump garlic cloves. Organic garlic is best, as it won’t have been treated to prevent sprouting.
• Prepare the Cloves: Separate the garlic bulb into individual cloves. Do not peel off the papery husk, as this helps protect the cloves.
• Place in a Container: Stand the cloves upright (pointed end up) in a shallow dish, glass, or jar. Add just enough water to cover the bottom part of the cloves, about 1/4 inch deep. Be careful not to submerge them fully, as this can lead to rot.
• Location: Place the container on a sunny windowsill or somewhere it can get indirect light.
• Change the Water: Refresh the water daily or every other day to keep it clean and prevent mold. Within 3-5 days, you should start to see green sprouts emerging from the tops of the cloves and roots developing at the base.
Step 2: Transferring Sprouted Garlic to Soil
• Prepare the Container: Choose a pot or container that is at least 6-8 inches deep with good drainage holes. Garlic needs space for root development.
• Fill with Potting Mix: Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally one enriched with compost. Loosen the soil and mix in a bit of sand or perlite to improve drainage.
• Plant the Sprouted Cloves:
• Make small holes about 2 inches deep for each sprouted clove.
• Place the sprouted clove in the hole with the green sprout pointing up and the roots downward.
• Space the cloves about 4-6 inches apart if you are planting multiple sprouts in a larger container.
• Cover and Firm the Soil: Gently cover each clove with soil, pressing lightly to secure it in place.
Step 3: Caring for the Transplanted Garlic
• Watering: Water the container immediately after planting. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.
• Sunlight: Place the container in a spot that receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight each day. A sunny windowsill, balcony, or patio are good options.
• Fertilizing: Once the garlic starts growing in the soil, you can fertilize it with a balanced or nitrogen-rich fertilizer about once a month to support healthy leaf and bulb development.
• Mulching: Adding a layer of mulch, like straw or shredded leaves, helps retain moisture and regulates the soil temperature.
Step 4: Harvesting the Garlic Sprouts or Bulbs
• Harvesting Sprouts: You can start harvesting the green sprouts when they reach about 4-6 inches tall by cutting the greens just above the clove. Garlic greens can be harvested multiple times until growth slows down.
• Growing to Bulbs: If you want to grow full garlic bulbs, allow the plant to continue growing for 4-6 months. The garlic will be ready to harvest once the bottom leaves turn yellow or brown, typically in early summer if planted in the fall.
Starting garlic in water and transplanting it into soil containers is a simple and effective way to grow garlic indoors or on a balcony. This method works well whether you’re aiming for garlic sprouts or eventually full bulbs!
