In this week’s project, I combine the art of woodturning with the magic of resin casting to create an experimental flower-shaped bowl/lamp/light . Watch as I carefully turn a custom stand and ingeniously embed a light within it, bringing this unique creation to life. Join me on this creative journey, and help me come up with the perfect name for this one-of-a-kind experimental piece!

All of 'experiments' have turned out to be lovely and useful creations and you have learned from each one, so all successes! The last one looks a touch like a rose. I would call it the '"Joplin lamp" for The Rose Janis Joplin. I have a restroom in my imaginary house that has a hospital shower, a combination whirlpool-hot tub, a large soaking tub a sauna and a corner greenhouse, one entire wall will be glass bricks. I believe that lamp would be perfect as an accent/mood lamp on the dressing table! 😄😼

Hello Mike. I really enjoyed your original “experiment” and have been looking forward to “part 2” - and it certainly didn’t disappoint! Your approach to this reminded me of an old science teacher I had many years ago. Her experiments were always eagerly awaited for the chance they would go wrong, despite her efforts to the contrary. One time she set the lab on fire and the class had to escape through the windows. Thank goodness health and safety became the norm. But you have produced something which is not only beautiful, but practical as well. Certainly a piece to enjoy for many years. And now I am looking forward to round 3 of your experiments. Have a great week.

Actually Mike I think all three of those resin discs were beautiful and would be practical too. I'm originally a wood machinist but I last worked a lathe some 40 years ago. Ive been a bus driver for the past 25 years. My lovely wife bought me a lathe for my 60th 4 years ago and I've had some fun with it. I've had some mishaps too but mostly re learned my trade. Your videos will undoubtedly inspire many people because you leave in your mishaps and even have a chuckle about them. I'm undergoing radiotherapy for cancer at the moment so haven't been on my lathe for a while, I am however watching your good self, Phil Anderson, whom I know you watch and many others. I love your work Keep it up Mike.

If you wait until the resin starts to thicken a bit before pouring you will get better color separation. Maybe also try one color thickened poured into another color fresher mix. Also try turning the mold with resin upside down on the bottom of the smaller bowl and start pressing. When the mold starts to release get it out of the way and press the bigger bowl on top of that trapping the resin between them.

The "flower bowl light" looks terrific. I cringed when the first one stuck to itself. I knew it would not come apart. I wonder if covering the piece with waxed paper from the kitchen would prevent such an issue. I like the colour changing effect. That was fun. I really like the idea of cutting the pedals in and overlapping, that was very smart and made a very good-looking flower pedal shape with the shaved corners. There is so much variability in the curing times, methods of coloring, type of mold, etc. This is kind of a nightmare project to film and present. I am very happy that you managed to make such a lovely result. I have a bunch of hollow stems from a shrub that my mother grows in her garden, I can't remember the name off hand, but the pith is basically sponge and can put pushed out with a piece of stiff wire and cleaned with a wire in a drill. I've always wanted to use these hollow stems to make a light fixture of some kind. And these resin flowers would look amazing in different shapes and sizes in a cluster extending from a turned base that holds the battery/cords, etc.

Thanks William, you are right about it being difficult to film . Those stems you have sound pretty cool and would make for a great project as you suggested. If you do it please send me pictures, my email is (mike@mikeholton.net)

Love to see you trying new techniques. Very nice flower, and I can picture the other bowl inverted for a planetary nightlight. Maybe on a nice bowl just to be different from this. Add some interesting bead design. Just a couple of thoughts thrown out there. Great work once again, Mike!

The art of discovery! You understand the concept well. Might be interesting to tape the mold to a rotating disc (turntable) as the resin is introduced. Just a thought from Kentucky lol!
