Samantha Janus represented United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest 1991 in Roma with the song A message to your heart. She finished 10th of 22 with 47 points.
Studio version had a very Belinda Carlisle/We Want The Same Thing vibe, which was really lost on the live performance with the orchestra. The Belinda style suited her voice much better.
I love it, but only for the camp ridiculousness. 4 Essex girls, in skimpy outfits and white stilleto shoes, lecturing the viewer / listener on the injustice of world hunger. You couldn't make this up.
and the other backing singer is Hazell Dean, a popular British singer, again, this is one of the entries in Eurovision to feature celebrities as backing singers after Miriam Stockley (Backing for Emma in 1990) and Albano Carrisi (backing singer for Jane Bogaert in 2000)
I remember watching this live. I’m old af! lol Edit: I also remember watching this host/singer (Toto Cutugno) win the competition live the year before too. Being Italian ourselves, we were happy he won that year. Great song too! This was when Eurovision was good. Good old days!
A message to your heart Half the world is hungry Just through being born And every day is a compromise For a grain of corn Medio mundo está hambriento Sólo por nacer así Y todos los días son un arreglo por un grano de maíz And half the world have too much Their only hunger is their greed Through politics and ignorance Half the world's in need Y medio mundo tiene demasiado Su única hambre es su avidez A través de la política y de la ignorancia Medio mundo está necesitado A message to your heart, it's all right Say a little prayer and sleep tonight, oh… Tomorrow you'll still be in paradise, oh… Un mensaje a tu corazón, es correcto Di una pequeña oración y duerme esta noche Mañana todavía estarás en el paraíso A message to your heart, walk on by Till you hear the voice of conscience cry, oh… There but for the grace of God, go I Un mensaje a tu corazón, pasa caminando Hasta que oigas la voz de la conciencia gritar Allí por la gracia de dios voy Half the world is lucky Born in paradise But they don't see the children With hunger in their eyes Medio mundo es afortunado Nacido en el paraíso Pero ellos no ven a los niños Con hambre en sus ojos And the time has come for changes Though for some it's much too late There's got to be an answer The hungry cannot wait Y ha venido el momento de cambios Aunque para algo es demasiado tarde Tiene que haber una respuesta El hambre no puede esperar A message to your heart, it's all right Say a little prayer and sleep tonight, oh… Tomorrow you'll still be in paradise, oh… A message to your heart, walk on by Until you hear the voice of conscience cry, oh… There but for the grace of God, go I Oh… a message to your heart, walk on by Till you hear the voice of conscience cry, oh… There but for the grace of God, go I There but for the grace of God, go I (A mesѕage to your heаrt) ((To the eye, the prettiest blonde ever, and fine clever lyrics for its time)) 5/5/2024
Oh Jesus Christ, my ears hurt!!! It is not a half bad song had she not sung off key. I don’t know how she managed to finish in Top 10. Maybe the judges (presumably mostly males) were too pre-occupied looking at her and overlooking her singing. As someone here commented earlier, if this is a beauty contest, she won by a landslide. 😅
She can act better than she can sing she sounded dreadful, I dont know which is worse her voice or the song. She is nice on the eyes but that's as far as it goes.
As screwed as this sounds, I remember watching this as an 11 year old and I fancied her so bad. But I was a gay kid so couldn't understand it. Never fancied a woman before or after that. Weird 🤣
If it was a beauty contest the UK would of nailed it that year for sure sadly the song and performance was poor and the contest itself must have been done a really low budget.
One of the two backing singers dressed in black is Hazell Dean, a very successful singer in her own right, I think she should have performed the lead vocals as this girl was completely off-key. A good song let down by a poor performance.
@@5Rays just found out that Samantha womack is Samantha janus. I've actually seen her on stage in the addams family. Many thanks for the guidance. Respect to you.
This song is Eurovision by rote, but it had every ingredient needed for success, except a lead singer who could sing in tune. Some of the phrasing is gratingly odd too ("pa-ruh-dieeece")
Yikesss 😱 No wonder UK had a musical talent famine for many years... All credit to her for having a go, but alas such good looks didn't mean a good voice.. Sadly....
Think the BBC realised that and managed to persuade Michael Ball and Sonja to sing the next two years, both runners up, at least it wasn't as bad as Toto 🤣🤣
C'est fou le nombre de faussetés en à peine trois minutes. Elle a de la chance de finir à la dixième place car franchement, vu la performance artistique, cela méritait la dernière place et largement.
Bzzzzzzzzzz! That's a No from me. 99% of people can sing in tune... we managed to find someone who can't to represent us. If we took Eurovision seriously it would be a national embarrassment.
@WilliamRideout-tn6th actually I can sing in perfect pitch and have performed (in tune) on stage many many times & no one laughed so you may eat your words!
