Try throwing in a Technology on the protectorate offer to Westphalia. I've found that frequently is just enough to make the sale. I'm cracking up over "I can do with a couple of naval battles each End Turn ..." I'm up to 1717 on this, and I assure you there are A LOT MORE coming, and even hairier than the ones you've seen so far. Sweden came down the north Sea one End Turn against my lone Fifth Rate guarding the Channel, with 1 Fifth Rate, 5 Sixth Rates, and a couple of Brigs. That was tough as I had to fight my way out of the corner twice. Any how: Here's a recap of my play-through of this so far: 1701 Summer: Take Dutch Guyana back. 1701 Winter: Take London and French Guyana. 1702: Take Scotland and Windward Isles; - then Maratha shows up in French Guyana with 1/4 stack against my General and 2 beat up Militia. Pen GB up in Ireland with a Brig in Belfast Strait and another razing Waterford every turn. 1704: Take New Granada 1705: Take New Andalusia 1706: Take Panama. Now start running two small stacks in Caribbean as Fortress Amsterdam stares down growing Westphalian, Spanish, and Hanoverian forces 1707: Take Jamaica and Cuba. Brutal defense of Amsterdam against Hanover is successful - but keeping this up will be too expensive. I plan on evacuating to London as soon as Utrecht is damaged. 1708: Take Haiti & Bahamas. Hanover returns and razes Utrecht, so I evacuate to London and start a second school in Oxford. 1709: Amsterdam falls to Hanover. Take Mexico. 1710: Defend Mexico against Pueblo and take Guatemala. The Pirates are now broke, since they're reduced to spawning random Brigs and Sloops. I will take now them out when convenient. 1711: Take Trinidad & Tobago and, as England is now pacified even with a second school, Portugal. 1712: Take Texas, Morocco, and Gibraltar - but missed an opportunity to take Madrid with a *coup de main* that I only realized the following turn. 1713: Take Spain, New Mexico, Spain and Algeria (from Prussia). 1714: Prepare to contest Western Mediterranean against massive fleet stacks from France, Savoy, Genoa and Knights of St. John by building Sixth Rates and Brigs/Sloops. 1715: Abandon Algeria to Rebels to defend Spain against French stack, that then rebounds (with reinforcements) to capture Savoy. What I take to be Knights' full stack of Sixth Rates chases a lone Fifth Rate into the Gulf of Pyrenees - but there's just six of them. CHRISTMAS PRESENT! I capture them and, ... 1716: ... led by 4 Fifth Rates, nuke the rest of Knights' fleet with my new fleet of Sixth Rates and a few random Brigs/Sloops. ;-). Recover Algeria and - suddenly - it's fully pacified. Cool! Capture Sardinia and Tunisia. 1717 Summer: Protectorate Barbary Pirates - my first, so I finally have Trade Income, and capture Malta. : To be continued. This "piracy as a day job rather than just occasional moonlighting" is a whole new trick for me - and fun. It's definitely upping my naval combat game. A few turns too late I realized that the U.S. never will form until after Thirteen Colonies is merged into G.B. - so my paranoia of not taking out G.B. early was unfounded. I'll know better next time. I will soon fall back on a favourite trick - move to take out G.B. in Ireland, but first give them Corsica. Than I will use 3 or 4 units to on--again-off-again siege then until I can capture all the American Colonies.
