One of the biggest questions I see newcomers ask, is whether they should use Unity, or Unreal Engine for game development. When it comes to making a game, both of these engines are perfectly capable of creating the same games.
In this video, I discuss topics like which engine is better suited for making mobile games, and which engines are better for 2D, and 3D game development.
I hope this video is able to give viewers a definitive guide on which engine they should use to start their game dev career.

I'm thinking of doing video game development as a hobby because there is a lot of triple A racing game titles out there that are not always meeting the expectations of the consumers, mainly because of the company focusing more on the quanity that they make out of the product instead of focusing on the quality of the product and how they can improve it. Because of this, I want to start off with Unity so I can get a feel of what it's like to make a game. When I gain more experience, I will probably move over to Unreal.

I started with UE5 and had really problems to come in, because i was before a C++ developer and yes i want to program c++. But i didn't found so much helpfull tutorials to reach my goals. At the end i found out, there is no C++ api for that stuff which i want to do. Means i need to make Blueprints. I'm more a text programmer then a visual programmer. Then i make the turn to Unity and i really need to say. I made the basic courses from unity itself + the specific courses which i need to do and it was really nice and easy to do the stuff which i want to do. I'm still a beginner with some weeks of expirience but currently I'm feeling more home in unity then in UE5

So true. First is a good idea to learn Unity to be familiar with c# and how all things work including classes, abstract classes, events, interfaces, singletons, etc BUT... then would be nice to have some nice series of tutorials on how to make a simple but complete game using UE to get familiar with what is where and how is all connected together first using blueprints and then C++. But I haven't found anything like this and UE just looks overwhelming with a very steep learning curve. I tried a couple of times but dropped it every single time.

@Skrelo
@Skrelo Год назад
Long code intimidates me aswell! But you shouldn't think of it like that. Games are made up of different functions like jumping, and running. When you start out, just focus on getting your character to run, then once you've done that, work on the jumping. You'll slowly have a bunch of different mechanics completed! Instead of thinking of it as long code, just think of it as a bunch of small gears coming together to make the machine work! Hope this helps!

@@leetness13 You mean in production? Let me rephrase what i was trying to say. Both engines can produce very similar end results. If you were to create the same game in Unity and Unreal it would be hard for most people to spot the difference. There are videos of people doing this. So, if you have a strong commitment to projects then either of these engines will be fine. Just sus out the assets if you plan to use them.

Please help me choose what Engine is best for me, thank you a lot... By the way, love your content, really inspired me to be a game dev.
@Skrelo
@Skrelo Год назад
In your case, to make a high quality 3d racing game for mobile, I'd maybe suggest Unity since it makes it easier for development, but you should learn about shader programming and post processing in Unity. If you're looking to find a job in game development, learning C++ will be handy for most jobs, but both C++ and C# are in high demand, so I'd suggest learning Unity and C# first, and then when you're comfortable, learn about C++ and Unreal later

Games like Alien Fire team Elite, Black Desert Online will usually crash on me after 2 hours of gameplay... which , i never had a crash on a Unity or custume engine Game. at least not as frequent as every 1-2 hours. thus ... i kinda try to avoid Unreal games to play.

Trust me, guys, if you are a beginner and want to create your first game, of course choose Unreal Engine!!! This is a completely different level! Blueprints are what will make you see how easy and fast your games can be programmed. Unreal Engine does not need various plugins, which you may not even be aware of as a beginner. Unreal Engine provides you with not just a game engine, but a complete professional game editor. And the most important thing for a beginner is that using the Unreal Engine, you don't have to worry about creating the architecture for your game - it's already built into the engine!!! This is the plus that disciplines and sets the right vector. And I'm already silent about how easy it is to update your game to the latest version of the Unreal Engine. And how incredibly difficult it is to do this in Unity...

you need to tell everyone that 3d, RPG, photorealistic video game takes 5-30 years complete; depending size of hard drive, size teams. size of talent pools, detailings, and rising funds. 1-5 years is high level budget games like GTA, red dead, cyberpunk 2077. Learn from experience people; People in video game industries. Don't do 3-D game all by yourself; doing max, blender, etc. Make your own game music it's going to kill your own free time. For example, I skipped vacation for seven years. I've upload different background game music and even A.I generated music. RU-vid put copyright strike RU-vid won't tell you about AI copyright songs. Also, don't download pirate assets. They want to waste your double time. you are going to focus different game rather completing the original game. Another tip making video game...start scrap paper..... What do you do if you are unemployed and unable to complete the game ? Don't worry about it. First copy game is usually million dollars. Another tip don't buy expensive house. You have to make another game. another one... better one; copy cat stealing your ideas.. Another tip you need three computers. usually computer break down and slow downs. fails. Another tip, you need rabbit foot. bad karma, insurance, power out, laptop catches fire, etc. been there. cyberpunk been there.Covid days, airplane delays, etc. it's like leonardo dicaprio revenant.

what would be your approach for a one man army? | like lets say gameplay carries the game, the story gets told by lvl design and setting which needs to be thought through anyway cause of gameplay and assets | for some gameplays there can be used (a) procedural generation for lvl, same with (b) generating textures for assets | assets can be modified with (c) use of multiple (!) filters which opens up asset flipping when needed + if the graphic style is done correct, the assets can be minimal too | AI for FPS example can be used from (d) older projects or ripped out of other games like stalker so you eventually end up with tons of automatisation work and tremendous focus on gameplay development | (e) is like buying music on fiver for cheap or colaborating with techno artists | am i overlooking something and do you happen to know any more building bricks that would make life simpler? | (f) low budget marketing are moves like letting female influencers who dont like hard games, play your hard game forced till end for money on record | thank you

Sorry but when you talk about programming and say Blueprint is lower then traditional programming you are wrong. Traditional programming C++ and C# both are text based programming and take a whole 3-6 month course just to learn the basics. Thats why no designer like them. On the other hand you can just follow some videos on Blueprits and don't need the full understanding of a whole programming language to get started and it works. Thats why Unreal Engine Blueprint is supreme and would beat out any programming language as a beginner language. The only downside is, it is slower than C# and C++. So for games whith havy calculations you still need a fast programming language and there wins C++.

@@TrentSterling I remember the part where he said traditional programming is easier than blueprints. That is absolutly wrong. Then all designer would prefer in Unreal Engine traditional programming.
