Amazing vid!!! It sounds incredible, truly up there with the greatest condensers ie. TLM103, OC818, MKH416, U87AI No emulation tone reminds me of the TLM103 but 5-15k is slightly less emphasised. Its like a smoothed TLM103! Also wtf i really really enjoyed the song! Great work on it haha Having stereo with two great capsules is incredible, can't imagine all the possibilities. I did it all in one take and didn’t really work on it because I was out of time. But if someone liked it, then that’s great! Thank you! The stereo 180 plug is overlooked a lot I think. You say this is IT but I think that if someone built one that was identical in performance yet the modeling totally open-sourced you might have to get that one also. If you could have chat GPT or whatever AI mimic the sound profile of ANY mic and not have to rename all the presets to avoid copyright infringement it would surpass this one. In fact if I could add one more negative it's that all the mic names are obfuscated. Haha. I get it but it's annoying. Open sourced would allow you to self program and not have to use coded language on your own AI generated presets.
@TheRecordist
@TheRecordist Год назад
Wow. That’s a great idea! Get on it! Hahaha You know, when I wrote out the names of the mics for this one, I didn’t use the Sphere names as they appear in the software. I used the real mic model numbers-I just removed the brand-just in case. But you’ve got a great idea there!

@@TheRecordist Since UA obviously has the tech to make virtual algorithmic clones of any real mic that they sell in packages they could also allow people to send in mics to get cloned for a reasonable fee. If you send one in to be cloned you should then get to own the clone and be able to create a library where people could get them free, or rent them like streaming videos, or even buy them individually. There could be a vast library of exact clones of specific mics. This is doable today without waiting around for an open-sourced AI version of the sphere. A bunch of them would just be nerd stuff but if you wanted Elvis' BX44 from Sun Studios you could rent it for the weekend to record with it. A virtual mic locker rental house. Only limited to how quickly UA could turnaround their clone algorithm. My guess is that it would be super easy since they wouldn't be sampling a bunch of mics to get an average of the model but just a quick scan of one specific mic.

I hear you. However, you don’t need an Apollo for the original library of mics. Currently you only need an Apollo for the Ocean Way and Bill Putnam collections. I suspect this will change in the future so you can have all three without an Apollo, since Spark is taking off. Either way, it’s the best mic I ever bought. So amazeballs that I want to punch myself in the face.

I absolutely love your channel! Thanks for making this video it sold me on the Sphere DLX. :) I just joined the Apollo universe with the Apollo Twin X USB. I'm about to get the Sphere DLX which I'm super excited about. Question: In my research I know that the mic outputs in dual mono, however is it possible to sum the dual mono into a single channel, and send it to output 3 or 4 of the Apollo? The reason I ask is I have outboard gear that I would like to send from the processed signal of the Apollo, however it only has one input on the outboard gear. Thanks again.
@TheRecordist
@TheRecordist 9 месяцев назад
Oh thanks so much! As for the summing part. Hmm. If you use the Sphere plugin on the insert channel of your input (these need to be stereo linked in console), you can for sure output to 3/4 but you don’t need to sum. Just choose one of them and that’ll give you the mono output of the Sphere plugin after the emulations have been applied. The problem is, once you’ve gone out of 3/4, how do you get it back in? You’re already using inputs one and two and that’s all there is… unless you use the TOSLINK port and expand your ins with a connected device like a Focusrite OctoPre or something. Hope you understood that. Haha.
@Muzick
@Muzick 9 месяцев назад
@TheRecordist That makes sense! This sounds weird but I want to send output 3 or 4 from the Apollo to the mic input on a GOXLR (probably should have just said that in my original post). I just wanted to make sure I could get a pure mono signal, and not just half of it (dual mono) because the Sphere uses two XLR outputs, so that I can continue using my streaming outboard gear. The GOXLR then sends that signal to its virtual lines on my computer for OBS to listen to. I appreciate the help! Thank you

@TheRecordist
@TheRecordist Год назад
Hey! Hmm. Stands begin to get expensive for heavy mics. Ideally you’d be looking at an Atlas stand like the SB36W. But they’re so expensive. A cheaper option is the Ultimate Support MC-125. Alternatively, you can find counter-weights on amazon that can attach the the opposite end of a regular boom stand. Just make sure the boom stand can take all that weight. Hope this helps!

Great video! You seem to be very impressed with this mic and the emulations, and I have to say it sounds great. I used the Slate modeling system for a few years, and was happy about it, but then I bought some actual tubemics (47 & 67 clones etc) and I haven't really gone back to the Slate VMS. Have you tried it, and how it compares to the UA system? Thanks for a great video!

Hey thanks! I have a couple of Slate ML-2 mics. They’re really cool. And I’ve had a chance to try the ML-1 and I wasn’t sold. The differences between the Townsend Labs L22 (now DLX) Sphere mic and the Slate ML-1 are staggering. Though, the cost of the DLX is much higher than the ML-1, so that must be taken into account. If you get a chance to try a Sphere mic, do it. I am so impressed with what they accomplished with this mic. It remains one of my most favorite mics ever - even without any emulations. Hope that helps!

Hmmm perhaps! And perhaps not! Even if I WAS the voice model, I wouldn’t (under contract) be able to tell you. I really enjoyed the video :) The mic sounds great, but from your comparison tests it really sounds like the modeling is pretty poor.. the real SM7b was less boomy than the emulation, and the real sm57 had a lot more top end detail / air. Maybe it's not a fair comparison because they're both dynamic microphones and it might actually do a better job with the high end condensers. Or maybe it just wasn't the perfect setting? I'd love to hear your toughts on the matter 🙏 Also, do you think it's a bad bargin to buy an L22 today rather than a DLX? (for 700$ less)

Hey. Yes. I agree with you. But you’re right. The dynamic mics are dynamic mics. You can only get so close. As for the other modeling, it does a really good job. Not exact, but very very close. It’s worth it, I think. And I think I’d PREFER the Townsend Labs over the DLX. It was the original best ever modeling mic. Good company. Good product. It will also always be supported.

The Atlantis is the best mic I’ve ever had. It’s got this genuine sound. The saturation of a transformer. A classic, modern, and vintage essence. I love it dearly. The DLX is also a fantastic mic and the emulations are really amazing. But to really open it up, you’ll need to get both the Ocean Way and Bill Putnam collection mic emulations. To get those, you’ll need an Apollo interface. And regular price is $299 USD each for those collections (when not on sale). The DLX requires two XLR inputs to work. The Atlantis only requires one. The DLX is a great mic, but if I had to choose one, I’d get the Atlantis. It’ll be with you forever and no chance of losing support in the future. Hope this helps!

Please help me. Thank you 1) Can I use the Ocean Way Microphone Collection as an insert in my DAW without Apollo, Also what is the CPU usage and latency? 2) What is the CPU usage and the latency of the VST that comes with the Sphere DLX? Thank you again
@TheRecordist
@TheRecordist Год назад
Hi Jack, I’ll try my best to answer your questions as best as I can. 1. No. You cannot use Ocean Way Sphere Collection without an Apollo. It 100% depends on the UA DSP to run. The latency for the Sphere plugins are something ridiculously small like 0.5ms-but that’s running on the Apollo Sharc cores. It takes up about 10% of one Sharc core. 2. The CPU usage and latency for the original Sphere plugin when used as a VST is completely dependent on your system. The latency can be measured inside your preferred DAW. But if your computer is newer than, say 2015, then my guess is it won’t be drawing as much processing power as an Apollo would-which is low anyway. That’s the best I can do. I’m just a customer like you. Haha.

Feel like UA is fully sucking me in but I can’t complain, they’re great! In my book, as long as it sounds good, I’m happy. Plus I figure it will also let me experiment a bit and let me have an eye towards a non-emulated ‘forever mic’ in the future. You won’t believe it, but it’s just shy of $500 USD. I was sent the cables to test (without knowing the price) and there’s no question that they’re fabulous. They sound crisp and cleaner than any cable I’ve ever used in more than 30 years in the business, but they’re total extreme pro-level cables and I expect only the big studios can spring for these. The components are insane. Like titanium and radium and a special beeswax insulator and 100% copper and all kinds of crazy high-end parts. Even the gold pins are hollow for added non-attenuation excellence. But $500. Haha.

Cable Porn from the HIFI world!??!! - Really! - Don't do that folks - Stick with physics instead -Do read Stephen Lampen's 'Audio /Video Cable installers Pocket Guide' -then, get Blue jeans to make you a 5 pin female XLR to 2 male XLR cable, using Belden 1800F - Sorted.

Haha. I was trying to figure out what you were talking about so I had to watch my video again. Are you talking about the 5-pin to dual 3-pin XLR cable that I recommended? Of course! Make your own! Agreed! Haha. If you can do that, then I recommend it. I’ve been making my own cables for a while now because the prices for decent RF shielded cables are insane. And buying any custom DLX cable anywhere is going to be a couple hundred bucks. But if you’re the type that wants the very best of everything that will last a lifetime and you don’t want to make it yourself, then this is an option for you.

Hi there. Depends how you define ‘best’ of course. I’ll go with the lowest CAPACITANCE BETWEEN CONDUCTORS (13 PF/FT for Belden 1800F), with a high density nitrogen foamed dialectic. Beware of cable manufactures that don’t provide you with stats. Get blue jeans to make you some. They’re doing that for me right now - and compare them to your mega bucks cable. I sold 7 pairs of chord indigo Xlr’s (when I was a Hi-Fi loon) - £1350 per pair - and replaced them with Belden 1800f (bluejeans cables £36 per pair). Bluejeans were obviously better. Just physics. Best wishes, and thanks for your enthusiasm.
