Universal Audio OX - does it sound AT ALL like the real thing? Shockingly different!

I compared the Universal Audio Ox emulations of a Marshall cab and classic mics to the real thing, in as closely a matched setting as I could get.
See how close they sound to each other - I love this thing but it turns out they are not really close at all!
Sound demos start at 7:40

Been looking for a good comparison video, thanks !

Good and important consumer report. Had never seen anything but glowing praise for OX's speaker emulation. Wonder how the Captor X compares. Nice work.

Thanks for this. You did a great job keeping continuity between the cabinet and OX. Recently I've been considering buying a Royer 121 or possibly the OX Box. I've got to say I was pretty sold on the OX until about 10:14 in your video when you were demoing the crunch sound. The OX did not hold up there for sure, at least to my ear. Also, I agree that it doesn't make sense for them to not provide control over the mic placement. It's a pricey tool for such an important feature to have been ignored. Again, greatly appreciated!

It may be as easy as rolling up the speaker drive on the Ox since a more broken in speaker the more tame the high end will be. Worth a shot.

I own the ox and it's fantastic for vintage sound (jazz, blues, old rock) I think they model the unit after a 1x12 (not enough low end for modern) . I also have a red seven central load box and it's model after a 4x12 low end for days!! The way I use them is red seven for rhythm and lead, clean and octaves ox. Perfect combo

Thank you for comparison. I find it easier for myself to dial sound using cab-mic but sometimes IRs have nice tones to blend in with other things.

Agree! But its not an IR, its UAs own room mic emulation. Most people say it sounds way better than IRs

The OX seems to sound a bit flatter (less hi end) than the real mics. Heavy Both mics did sound pretty different from real to OX. Overall, it does sound way better than Mesa's Cab Clone, which I bought and promptly sold after a few days...

Thank you very much for this comparison. I now know enough to take an educated decision. The more distortion, the more the OX fell apart. It just sounds too synthetic.

I think it was a good test. You really don't know if the OX sample mic placement matched the picture - as they are all very close proximity. I think the OX sounds better as it didn't roll off the lows and highs. The sounds I get directly to my track are awesome and killer and "quick"! the range of mic and cab's is worth the price of admission. My original Marshall, Randall are now back in my recording due to this box. I have a brand new Soldano SLO-30 added and with the OX - I have every sound at my finger tips that i will ever need. It's a killer box and the "differences" you noted sound better to me on the OX.

It depends where you put the mic when you’re modelling the virtual speaker I think

12:12 and 12:20 sounded quite different. Also I thought the cleans sounded a little more bassy on the real cabinet but both were nice. Overall I prefer the real cabinet I think.

This is a great video. I have the OX. What you presented at the end of the video is exactly what Michael Neilson presented in a video a few years ago. He was trying to match the SM57 with a V30. Instead he used the stock mics and stock preset; but with the V30. He used the EQ and tweaked to to ton match. It was VERY close. I am trying to get the SM57 with Greenbacks and my cranked Plexi to do the same thing. I am not an audio engineer and am very inexperienced with EQing. Have you tried to do tone matching with the Greenbacks?

I wanted to add to this by asking; can this be done with the internal EQ that is in the OX?

I own an ox and haven’t even used it yet lol. The ox sounds more up front like there’s no room sound. I know there’s a room sound tho. And yes I agree the filters help make them sound similar. Not surprised that they sound different. Why should they sound the same. Nothing digital sounds like the analog counterpart. Close. Similar. Sure. Same. Never I think it comes down to workflow and how much you care for “tones”. Which doesn’t matter wo good arrangement and performance anyway.

The 🎤ed Amp Killed at Every Level . It Just Had a Full Real Sound , I Do Understand The Work Flow and The Time Savings With The OX Box , But The Sound Was So Real . More Time Should Be Spent on Getting The Real Sound . I'm Thinking This May Be The Reason Music isn't as Forefront as it Used to Be . Everything on The Radio These Days Sounds The Same , Maybe it's All The Time Saved and Shortcuts ??

It's strange that in the cleans both ox and cab sound pretty good, but the higher the drive the more the ox loses ground. Very strange.

Not digging the emulation in the distorted sounds at all

I find that all digital modelling has to be treated as if it was full range 20 htz to 20 khtz and a lot of shaving needs to be done to remove unwanted artifacts, if i used an ox live i would tell the engineer to consider using roll off filters

Also, i have considered hooking my amps up like you say, with one speaker out going to a cab and one speaker out going to the ox (assuming the impedance is matched), with both speaker box and ox hooked up, did you notice any change in tone from the real cab ?
@lordgraga
@lordgraga Год назад
@@fuckthecoruptcunts the Ox can pass through to a real speaker and deactivate/bypass its internal load, the YES the difference will be there, and it will be noticeable. Edit: to clarify, the Ox has a different impedance from real speakers. You should never use it in parallel with a real speaker. But if you pass a real speaker through the Ox, that’s good. Finaly… the reason it will sound different is because the impedance curve of the load affects the negative feedback to the amp’s power section greatly.
