Hi, great guidance thank you! I notice the Gov.uk site doesn't say you need National Insurance number but you mention this is needed. Have they missed this off the requirement list? Thanks

When you first apply you will need to give them your NI number as they use this to identify you. If it isn't on the list then this is probably an oversight on their part.

It's simply not possible to get through to the DWP by phone at the moment. Those who were unable to verify with their identity online with Digidentity have found that they are totally stuck. Don't expect help from Digidentity. The best thing to do is to log into your Universal Credit account and leave a message explaining your problem on the "Journal" tab on your claim on the right. They will get back to you saying that they will call you when they are able.

Absolutely, every contact you try to make by phone should always be backed up using the messaging centre through your Universal Credit homepage.

Good morning Stuart and thank you for the very informative video. Just one simple question. I have gone through the whole application including verification of my email address and ID via the Government Gateway User ID system. As yet I have not heard or had an email back (I have checked all my email folders) from them. Where do I go from here assuming (maybe wrongfully so) that everything was received and in good order?

I have made a claim for universal credit and it has been a head ache to say the least just mixes info about what documents u need to bring to your first job interview I was fine with but then I got a message from someone at the job centre telling me what to bring one od them was a gp letter to confirm am registered with them even though it does not state that online as one of the documentation need to be more clear on the information.

heyy. while i was applying they requested for a proof of ID. it says they want a “valid UK passport”, however, i own a Dutch passport. i was wondering why they specifically request a british passport?

One needs to be a UK resident to apply for benefits so this would be demonstrated with a British Passport and/or satisfy a Habitual Residency test

Hi thanks for this amazing information so I apply already for universal credit is first time without nino I finish interviews by phone call from Jobcentre plus I try to getting advanced money but online account said you didn’t verify you ID and you are in process if you are or not eligibility

Hi, thanks for getting in touch. I apologise for the delay in response. Unfortunately there a lot of problems with the online ID verification process. I expect you have sorted this out now, but if not I would try contacting your local Citizens Advice Bureau for support with this.

If you are a UK resident with passport and are working, or have been working and paying income tax, you should have a national insurance number so it is worth checking with HMRC. However it isnt entirely necessary to have one to apply as long as you have been in the UK for more than 6 months and established "Habitual Residency". There will be a lot more questions regarding your residency status and you may have to provide evidence of your residency status

If I was refused JSA for not having enough national insurance contributions would I be refused UC if I applied

UC calculations are based on your income & savings. There are other factors that might prevent you from claiming, but NI contributions are not apart of it.

Hey there, when applying for universal credit, will they pay rent as well as some extra money? I'm currently living with a friend and sister, and we renting from renting company.

I cannot answer that specifically as it depends on your circumstances but if you put your details in to this benefits calculator it can give you an idea of what you might be able to claim. It is run by an independent charity, Turn2Us - benefits-calculator.turn2us.org.uk/AboutYou

You will need to access guidance from the DWP on how to update your journal this can be found online or by calling the helpline number you were given. Also your job coach may be able to give you some pointers. Often local libraries offer training sessions to help with this. While this may not be possible due to current restrictions it may be worth getting in touch with them as some of this support may be offered remotely or over the phone

You can apply for UC and will be assessed on your current savings and income, you may get further support with your small business from them based on whether you are "gainfully" self employed or not.

Hi.hope you ok.. however me n my wife has combined income monthly around £1250.00 so certainly we are on low income. we have no kids. my wife work 20 hours per week getting £720.00 monthly n i work 16hours per week £525.00. however my is only eligible for public funds not me.. so if we take 1 bedroom house for rent £1150.00 so how much we can get monthly or how things work..can you please explain me..

Hi Thanks for getting in touch. I recommend going to the website www.turn2us.org.uk/ as you will be able to do a full benefits check and it will tell you precisely what you will be eligible for. If this is not possible try getting in touch with your local CAB

The way Universal Credit assessors view things is if you are earning less than approx 60% of median income then you are classed as being on a low income.

You only need to pay it back if you have been overpaid for some reason, like if you lose your eligibility or if your earnings were calculated incorrectly one month and they give you more than they should have. It depends on the circumstances somewhat, but essentially if you are eligible and the amount your receive is correct then no you do not have to pay it back.

I’ve been on UC for 3 months I’ve had my first payment which really is a loan £409 which I’ve got to pay back next payment 0 they told me I’m due a tax rebate which your your ment to get in April end of tax year £535 I’ve done 2 days work since then 2 days £165 next payment 0 so in 3 months they’ve payed me my tax rebate and given me a loan I’m the mean time I’ve asked for help they told me to find a food bank or contact salivation army. I’ve payed my taxes payed my national insurance. UC is there to stop you getting money not help it’s run like a bank it a fucking con. No wonder people are topping there selfs they’ve payed me with my own fucking money

Absolutely, the whole thing is designed to push people into poverty by the seem of it. The use of corporate finance models used to deliver the loan which then leads to debt, simply because the claimant is forced into a completely avoidable 5 week wait is a scandal in itself.
