Hello and welcome to What Da Math!
In this video we are going to construct the closest solar system to our Sun called Alpha Centauri. This is going to be a realistic attempt at showing the distances and sizes involved and will give you an idea of how far away things are in space.

The star Alpha Centauri is also called Rigil Kentaurus. That is what it said on my favorite book called Stars and Planets

The third star in the system is a star, it's a red dwarf known as Proxima Centauri or Rigel Kentaurus

Welcome back! I have a few ideas for future videos: Replace the Earth with Venus. Get rid of the terrestrial planets and put Jupiter in the middle of the habitable zone with the four terrestrial planets orbiting it. Even if they all collide it'll be a cool site.

Alfa centaury C is also called proxima centaury and there was an earth like planet orbiting it that was discovered this month

2% of the distance to earth is 3 million kms. That's abou 4x radius of the star, so, it's actually a much scary picture.

The star is called Proxima Centauri (or Alpha Centauri C) a Red Dwarf and is the closest star to our own Sun. Proxima Centauri was also discovered to a planet orbiting within the habitable zone with possible conditions for life (although it is thought it may be tidally locked). You've really downplayed Proxima Centauri here....

Hey, could you make a "Super Habitable" planet, in the next video? That would be pretty cool:) Also, I though proxima was a dim red dwarf, not a brown dwarf and the possible planet we found orbited star B, not A.

Actually Yes it is a red dwarf it is not a Brown dwarf to be honest if it was a brown dwarf it would be a failed star: that dosen't have enough mass.

I always thought Alpha Proxima was a Red Dwarf, not a Brown................Only three days for that planet's orbital period! It must be just a giant ball of magma! :(

If you listened to the video you would know that they don't know if the star actually belongs to the system or is just visiting. We do not know currently if it a Binary or Trinary system due to the fact we have simply not seen the system long enough to know.

+Lucas Vander-Bartlett Brown dwarfs are basically massive and hot gas giants, they are failed stars For example, Wolf 359 is 94.3 times the mass of Jupiter. So, no, they won't become Jupiter-like, they are much more massive

Our own Solar System could have 2 star's! The sun is the main star but Jupiter could become a star just as it is! It has enough mass and hydrogen Helium to supernova into a star!

No it doesn't! Jupiter if anything would have to be 11 times the mass to be a brown dwarf! But it has hydrogen and helium now as it sit's so it could be a dwarf star now!

It is possible for Jupiter to become a brown dwarf maybe even a lower mass star, thats if the Solar System survives that long and has enough objects to feed such a mass
